Overview

HCSS is a connected software platform for contractors delivering heavy civil and infrastructure projects. It covers work from estimating and planning through project management and final reporting, with products for safety, fleet management, telematics, plans and cloud hosting. HCSS was founded in 1986 and is headquartered in Sugar Land, Texas.

Its core customers are infrastructure, heavy and highway, and utility contractors working on roads, bridges, dams, airports and other major infrastructure. This makes HCSS a specialist construction platform rather than a paint-selection or home-improvement app. Readers comparing tools for construction estimates can also browse Painting and construction estimating software.

Key features

Estimating and project controls

HeavyBid is HCSS’s estimating product. It is designed to standardize estimates so contractors can prepare bids faster and more accurately while protecting margins. HCSS also lists bid management, RFI management, submittals, project scheduling, field reporting and project financials among its capabilities.

Reporting and integrations

HCSS offers more than 80 automated and customizable reports powered by Microsoft Power BI. Its integrations connect with systems including Viewpoint, SAP, QuickBooks and ADP. Data can move through SQL, APIs or flat files; synchronization may run as often as every five minutes, although some data access can be limited by HCSS API usage policies.

Cloud, security and support

HCSS Cloud hosts applications and data, with HCSS managing security maintenance, backups, updates and service around the clock, every day of the year. HCSS states that its security program includes SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 compliance. It also says customer data is not used to train global or other customers’ AI models and stays within the customer’s private Azure tenant.

Support is available 24/7/365 from HCSS’s Sugar Land headquarters through chat, email, community or phone. HCSS says phone support answers in three rings or fewer.

Pricing

HCSS is paid software, but pricing is available on request. The listed HCSS software plan has no published price and requires a custom quote based on company type and role. There is not enough information here to compare subscription costs or tiers.

Platforms

HCSS lists Android, iOS, web, Windows and API availability. The HCSS Employee App runs on smartphones through the Apple App Store or Google Play. The Crew app is available through the web app.

For its software environment, HCSS recommends Windows workstations running Windows 7 or 8, with an i7 processor and at least 8GB of memory. These are the stated desktop recommendations; confirm current requirements with HCSS before choosing hardware.

Who it's for

HCSS is aimed at contractors managing large, infrastructure-focused work, particularly heavy/highway and utility projects. Its estimating, field reporting, scheduling, fleet and project financial capabilities are relevant to organizations coordinating work across the project lifecycle. Homeowners and DIY painters choosing coatings for walls, concrete, wood or metal are unlikely to need a platform built around bidding and managing major civil projects.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad coverage across estimating, project management, safety, fleet, telematics, plans, hosting and reporting.
Pros: More than 80 customizable and automated reports, with integrations to established business systems.
Pros: Round-the-clock support and cloud hosting services managed by HCSS.
Cons: Pricing is not public, so prospective customers need to request a tailored quote.
Cons: Some integration data may be constrained by API usage policies.
Cons: Its heavy civil focus makes it a poor fit for household painting and coating projects.

Alternatives

For other estimating and construction software options, consider OpenConstructionERP, Trimble Viewpoint Vista, Bidwright, Trimble Quadri, CostX, Buildxact, QuoteSoft and eTakeoff. The available details do not support a feature-by-feature comparison, so check each product’s fit for your project and workflow.

Verdict

HCSS is a substantial platform for contractors bidding and managing heavy civil and infrastructure work. Its connected product coverage, reporting, integrations, cloud hosting and continuous support address the needs of organizations coordinating complex projects. Custom pricing and possible API limits are worth clarifying before adoption. For a homeowner or DIY painter, however, HCSS is not a practical tool for choosing or applying paint, stain or coatings.
