Overview

Sweet Home 3D is a free interior design application for drawing a home plan and viewing it in 3D. For a homeowner planning a paint, stain or coating project, its main value is spatial: a plan can help make sense of room layouts and surfaces before work begins. It is not described as a tool for selecting paint colours or specifying coatings.

You can draw straight, round or sloping walls with precise dimensions, then annotate a plan with room areas, dimension lines, text, arrows and a compass rose. As the plan takes shape in 2D, a live 3D view lets you inspect the home from above or from a virtual visitor’s perspective.

The software can also create photorealistic images and videos, with customizable lights and sunlight based on time of day and geographic location. It imports blueprints, 3D models and textures, and can print or export plans as PDFs, bitmap or vector images, videos and 3D files in standard formats.

Key features

Plans, views and presentation

Use dimensions and annotations to communicate a layout, then move between the 2D plan and its 3D representation while designing. For a decorating project, those views can help you consider a room’s arrangement and see how its surfaces fit into the overall space. The listed features do not include paint-specific colour matching or coating advice.

Lighting and sunlight settings allow rendered images and videos to reflect a chosen time of day and geographic location. Video export is available, as are real-time scenes.

Catalogs, imports and extensions

Catalog size depends on the edition. The maker advertises a full version with over 10,000 3D models and 400 textures, while free desktop bundles have smaller catalogs. The Windows free bundle, for example, includes 100 furniture items and 26 textures. The Microsoft Store subscription lists more than 1,600 furniture items and more than 400 textures.

Java plug-ins can add features. Listed extensions include tools for generating roofs, staircases and terrain, as well as HTML5 views. The application can import blueprints, models and textures, so its work is not limited to the built-in catalog.

Help and licensing

Support materials include documentation, a user guide, video tutorials, FAQs, a forum and contact links. The free application is distributed under the GNU General Public License, which the maker says allows personal and commercial use under that license. It also says the GPL prevents developers who do not own Sweet Home 3D copyrights from making proprietary programs derived from or incorporating it, and directs those interested in other licensing arrangements to ask about them.

Pricing

Sweet Home 3D has a freemium model. A free trial is listed, and the maker offers a free desktop and online version.

Plan	Price	Details
Free desktop / online version	0.00 USD per free	Desktop downloads for Windows, macOS and Linux; the online version requires free registration to save designs. Free downloadable editions include smaller furniture and texture catalogs.
Microsoft Store Monthly Premium	9.99 USD per month	Monthly Premium subscription that renews automatically unless turned off at least 24 hours before the period ends. Price may vary by country. Includes +1600 furniture items, +400 textures and a 7-day free trial; limited features are available free.

Catalogs and terms differ between the free editions and the Microsoft Store plan, so check which version’s catalog and subscription conditions apply before choosing.

Platforms

Listed platforms are Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, web and extension. The primary platform is described as hybrid, and mobile viewing is available. The desktop download is listed for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Sweet Home 3D Online Manager runs in a WebGL-compatible browser without installation. Free registration is required to save a design. The school offering is available for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Who it's for

Homeowners and DIY painters can use the plan and 3D view to think through room layouts before choosing finishes or scheduling work. It can help clarify the space being decorated, but the listed features do not provide paint selection, colour recommendations or surface-specific coating guidance.

The maker also describes professional uses for architects, interior designers, furniture retailers and manufacturers, real estate, and event planners. Its school offering is intended to teach design and architecture concepts through practical 2D and 3D projects.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free desktop and online options; precise wall dimensions and plan annotations; a live 3D view alongside 2D planning; image and video rendering with adjustable lighting and sunlight; multiple import and export formats; extensions and support materials.
Cons: Free desktop bundles have smaller catalogs than the advertised full version; saving an online design requires free registration; it is an interior planning tool, not a paint or coating selector; proprietary derivative development is restricted under the stated GPL terms.

Alternatives

Other options include Home Design 3D, Live Home 3D, Planner 5D, Roomle, RoomSketcher, Coohom, Floor Plan Creator and HomeByMe.

Verdict

Sweet Home 3D is a capable home-layout and visualization option for people who want to plan in 2D and review the result in 3D. Its dimensions, annotations, rendering and broad export options can support preparation for a decorating project, while the free versions make it possible to start without a paid subscription. Keep its scope in mind: it helps represent a home, but the listed capabilities do not choose paint colours or recommend products for walls, concrete, wood or metal.
