To cover a song legally, clear the rights for the song and any recording you use, then check that your AI cover service permits your intended use. A tool’s paid plan or export option does not by itself establish permission to publish a cover commercially. If you cannot confirm the needed permissions and platform terms, keep the result private while you check.
Know What You Need To Clear
Start with the specific source you plan to use: the song’s music and lyrics, and, if you upload or transform an existing recording, that recording too. These are separate rights questions. Ask the relevant rightsholders or their representatives what permission covers your exact use, such as a personal upload, a monetized video, or a release on a music service. Requirements can vary by use and location; this guide is not legal advice.
Changing the singer with AI does not answer those rights questions. The tool may have its own restrictions as well. For example, SunoMV says source-song licensing remains the user’s responsibility; Jammable says commercial use is not allowed; and Media.io says its free plan is for personal use only, with commercial use requiring a paid plan. Check each vendor’s current terms for the exact use you have in mind.

Follow This Clearance Workflow Before Generating
- Write down the intended release. Specify whether the cover is for private practice, a public social post, a monetized video, or commercial distribution. Include whether you will use the original recording, publish lyrics, or pair the audio with visuals.
- Identify the source material. Record the song title, writers or publisher if known, and the exact recording or file you plan to upload. A link to a song is not evidence that you have permission to make a cover from it.
- Ask what permissions cover your use. Contact the relevant rights holders or representatives and describe the intended release plainly. Keep written replies and any license terms with the project. Do not assume a permission for one use covers another.
- Check the AI service terms. Look for rules on uploaded material, voice cloning, commercial use, and the outputs you can publish. If the terms do not clearly answer your case, ask the vendor before proceeding.
- Get consent for identifiable voices. Use a voice model only when you have permission to use the person’s voice or the model is otherwise authorized for your use. Check the platform’s voice and upload terms too.
- Save a rights folder. Keep the source details, permission correspondence, applicable service terms, and the version of the cover you intend to release together.
- Recheck before posting. Confirm that the permission and platform terms cover the final destination and any monetization. If you cannot verify that, do not publish it as cleared.
Choose A Cover Tool With The Rights Caveat In View
These services describe cover creation or voice conversion, but their listed capabilities do not establish that a particular song is cleared. Confirm current terms with the vendor and obtain any permissions needed for your source material and release.

Make The Cover Without Expanding The Rights Problem
- Use a source you are allowed to process. Upload only the recording you have permission to use, and follow the service’s upload rules. If your permission covers a song but not a specific recording, do not assume that recording is cleared.
- Choose an authorized voice. Select a preset voice only if the service permits your intended use. For a custom voice, get the person’s consent for the voice model and cover context, then check the platform terms.
- Describe musical changes without inventing clearance. A practical instruction could be: “Keep the song’s melody and lyrics; make a restrained acoustic reinterpretation; use the authorized voice model; do not add new lyrics.” Treat that as a creative direction, not proof of permission. Check whether the tool supports the controls you want before relying on them.
- Review the output before release. Check that it contains only material you intended to use and that the chosen voice is authorized. Keep a copy of the final export and the records showing what you cleared.
- Check destination-specific requirements. Spotify announced that vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized it, and that it supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits. It also announced an AI Persona badge for identities that may be AI-generated rather than a real person. Check the current rules and disclosure options at your intended destination before submitting. When You Cannot Confirm Permission
Pause the release and ask the rights holder, representative, or service for clarification. If you cannot establish that your intended use is covered, do not treat an AI-generated voice, a paid subscription, or a successful download as clearance. Keep the draft private until the relevant permissions and terms are clear.
