Types of Paint Sprayers For Furniture?

You’ve got 2 main types of paint sprayers for furniture to choose from. Let’s talk about both of them in greater detail below:

High Volume Low-Pressure Paint Sprayers (HVLP)

High Volume Low-Pressure Paint Sprayers (HVLP) offer a greater degree of precision, making them ideal if you wish to paint things like furniture, doors, and handrails.

You should also know that HVLP sprayers are much more user-friendly than their handheld counterparts. Besides that, they don’t waste nearly as much paint.

One disadvantage of HVLP sprayers is that they’re prone to becoming clogged. As such, they are not the best option if you’re using thicker paints without any thinners.

Also Read: How To Clean an HVLP Spray Gun? 5 Easy Steps

Handheld Sprayers

Nowadays, professionals don’t tend to use handheld sprayers. Be that as it may, these types of paint sprayers are still very popular among DIY enthusiasts because of their user-friendliness.

Such sprayers commonly make use of a built-in turbine or airless systems. They have got paint reservoirs and don’t utilize hoses or external compressors.

Handheld paint sprayers are great for use with furniture and other types of objects.

Sad to say, they aren’t the best option if you’re working on larger projects due to the limitations in the capacity of their reservoirs and their proneness to produce overspray.

What To Look For In Paint Sprayers For Furniture?

10 Best Paint Sprayer For Furniture

Here’s everything that you should look for when buying a paint sprayer for furniture:

Paint Sprayer Power

The paint sprayer that you buy should be powerful enough to meet your needs.

Handheld sprayers usually have less power but can cover a lot more surface area faster. On the other hand, HVLP sprayers are more powerful, precise, and usually slower.

However, they produce less overspray, which is great if your goal is to save as much paint as possible.

Tips & Nozzles

Tips and nozzles are very important components of paint sprayers for furniture.

They dictate the size as well as the shape of what you may spray on a given surface. Usually, a paint sprayer comes with several tips and nozzles for the sake of versatility.

Sprayer Capacity

All paint sprayers can only hold a limited amount of paint.

Of course, the larger the reservoir of a paint sprayer, the better. Needless to say, you may want to opt for a sprayer with a smaller reservoir as they’re more suited for smaller projects.

Flow Control

Not all paint sprayers allow you to control the flow of paint they spray out.

With that in mind, it’s best that you choose a sprayer that has a flow control feature as this feature will come in handy when you’re painting furniture.

Level of Versatility

Despite their namesake, some paint sprayers can spray more than just paint.

A few of the paint sprayers that we discussed earlier can also handle other materials like lacquer, varnish, primer, and a lot of other stuff that you’d need for DIY projects.

Hose & Cord Length

The length of the hose and cord of your paint sprayer for furniture is very important.

For smaller projects, a sprayer with a short hose and cord would do just fine. However, larger paint jobs will require you to have a sprayer with a long hose and cord to accommodate your needs.

Ease of Maintenance

Paint sprayers need to be cleaned regularly or else they may end up becoming clogged. Due to that, you should make it a point to purchase a well-designed paint sprayer that’s easy to clean.

That way, you shall not have to go through much hassle after finishing your DIY painting jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should You Rent or Buy a Paint Sprayer?

It’s really up to you. Those who plan on engaging themselves in many DIY projects may want to buy their own sprayer. Meanwhile, others might simply need to use a paint sprayer once. Now if you want to learn more regarding this topic, you may look up this guide.

Do You Really Need a Paint Sprayer?

To put it simply, no. You don’t need to invest in a paint sprayer to apply a fresh coat of paint to your furniture. Opting for the traditional hand brush method will do just fine. However, the one problem with using a paintbrush is that it takes a lot of time and effort.

Now with that said, here’s our guide that’ll inform you of the best paint brushes for furniture.

Is Thinning Paint Necessary Before Spraying?

The answer to this question generally depends on the sprayer that you’re using.

Some sprayers can handle thicker paints without any problems at all. However, most HVLP paint sprayers aren’t compatible with thicker paints. With such sprayers, you must utilize a thinner to avoid problems such as cloggage.

10 Best Oil-Based Spray Paint For Your Projects

April 23, 2022 By Jim Bettesworth

Picture this: you’re halfway through an elaborate DIY project when you realize that you haven’t bought any paint. You search online to try and find some oil-based paint that works for your project, but the internet offers you too many types of paint, and you don’t know where to begin! Thankfully, this is where we come in.

In this guide to oil-based spray paint, we will explain what oil-based paints are, when, and how you use them, followed by a list of the top ten best oil-based paints currently available in the market.

Also Read: Ultimate Guide To Homemade Paint Remover

Let’s go!

What are oil-based spray paints?

What are oil-based spray paints?

Oil-based spray paints are, quickly simply, paints that have either a natural or synthetic oil as their base instead of water. When it comes to natural oil-based spray paints, it is worth noting that the paint has linseed oil as its base. On the other hand, less natural and chemical-based paint will have synthetic alkyd as its base.

Oil-based spray paints are much more durable than synthetic spray paints and dry very quickly. After the paint dries, it leaves behind a shiny or glossy finish that eventually begins to fade over time.

When to use oil-based spray paints?

Best Oil-Based Spray Paint For Your Projects

You can use oil-based spray paints at any time. However, it would be best to use oil-based spray paints when you want the paint to cover a surface and last for a long time. This means that you would usually use oil-based spray paint on furniture, cabinets, and molding. Additionally, you can use these paints on a wide range of surfaces, including glass, wood, and concrete.

You can use oil-based spray paints on outdoor furniture, mainly if you live in a place that is prone to constantly changing weather. Oil-based spray paints are specially designed to withstand different weather conditions, which means that they won’t run, bleed, or stain your furniture. You can also use these paints when you aren’t planning on changing the color of the surface or furniture very often.

How to use oil-based spray paint?

Using oil-based spray paint is much simpler than you might think. However, even though the process is relatively simple, here are some tips to remember before you get started.

  1. Oil-based spray paints have strong fumes, so you must use them in a well-ventilated room. If you have a wide porch or garden, we’d highly recommend using the spray paint outdoors.
  2. Wear a spray paint mask, don’t breathe any toxic fumes, dust, or paint particles.
  3. Depending on what you’re painting, it would help you if you dismantled the furniture and sprayed the individual pieces separately.
  4. Before you use a can of spray paint, ensure that you shake it several times.
  5. Hold the can at least five feet away from the surface you’re about to paint when you’re ready to start painting. Doing this ensures that you will cover the surface evenly with the oil-based spray paint. It also helps make sure that the surface will dry evenly.
  6. Once you start to paint, try and paint in several different directions. Doing this will help you cover the entire surface of the area you want to cover while also preventing noticeable stripes from forming after the paint dries.

10 Best Oil-based Spray Paints

Now, let’s take a closer look at the ten best oil-based spray paints currently available for you to buy. It is worth noting that most spray paints are oil-based, which means that in terms of choice, you aren’t limited to only one or two brands! However, if you have a wide range of color requirements, you might not be as lucky because oil-based spray paints are generally sold in only a few shades. Still, the market has multiple products to choose from, so let’s take a closer look!

Top 15 Heat Resistant Paints In 2022

Picture this. It is snowing outside, and you’ve just made a cup of hot chocolate to drink in front of a cozy fire. You sit down to watch some TV when you suddenly notice that the paint on the inside of your fireplace is looking a bit worse for wear. Even though you’ve been putting it off for a while, it’s finally time to give your fireplace a few coats of heat-resistant paint.

However, you may not know where to get started and what the best brands for heat-resistant paints are. Thankfully, that’s where we come in to help you! This guide will take you through a list of the top 15 best heat-resistant paints. We’ll explain what these paints are, how to apply them correctly, and how to choose the perfect heat-resistant paint that best suits your needs.

Let’s dive in.

What are heat-resistant paints?

Quite simply, heat-resistant paints are specially designed to resist extremely high temperatures that fluctuate often. Good heat-resistant paint protects the surfaces it is painted on from grease, corrosion, heat, dust, flames, and smoke, depending on where the paint is used.

This type of paint becomes heat-resistant because manufacturers combine different inorganic pigment powders with polysilicon alkoxide, a binding agent. Depending on the brand and the concentration of ingredients, heat-resistant paints can withstand temperatures over 315 degrees and higher. They can even go up to nearly 400 degrees in some cases!

Heat-resistant paints are generally either silver or black, but they also come in shades of red, yellow, orange, dark grey, and white.

How to apply high-temperature heat resistant paints correctly

When applying high-temperature heat resistant paints, it’s important to note that you must do the following:

  1. First, allow the surface you are about to paint to cool down. For instance, you might be painting an exhaust pipe, grill, wood stove, or radiator. No matter what surface you’re about to paint, you must let the surface cool completely so that you can apply the paint properly.
  2. Next, clean the surface. Using a dry cloth, rub the surface firmly to eliminate any dust, dirt, or grime so that it doesn’t get stuck to or mixed with the paint.
  3. Prepare the surrounding areas. For instance, if you are painting part of a car, use masking tape to cover the areas you don’t want to be covered with paint, and place drop cloths or old newspapers on the floor so that you don’t make a mess.
  4. The application of the paint depends on whether you’re using heat-resistant paint from an aerosol can or a bucket.
If you’re painting a surface using a can of paint, make sure you shake the can thoroughly for a couple of minutes, then hold it at least one foot away from your desired surface. Spray the paint evenly in a thin layer, let it dry, and then repaint it with at least two more layers.

If you’re painting the surface by using a brush, try and refrain from going back and forth multiple times. Apply thin layers of paint with the brush, let them dry, and then go back and add one or two more coats.

15 Best Spray Paint Masks In Your Budget

15 Best Spray Paint Masks In Your Budget

Spray painting is one of the most exciting ways to cover a surface with paint, mainly because it allows you to live out the fantasy of being a graffiti artist! However, while using spray paint is exciting, the fumes that it emits are harmful to breathe. This is because they are toxic and can harm your respiratory system.

In this guide, we will walk you through 15 of the best spray paint masks. We’ll include masks that are budget-friendly, easy to find, and comfortable to wear! We will also explain what spray paint masks are and how to choose the best mask for your needs.

Let’s take a closer look.

What is a spray paint mask?

A spray paint mask is a facial covering that is specially designed to protect you from breathing in toxic or poisonous vapors, paint fumes, or dust. Spray paint masks are also called respirators. Spray paint masks come with a unique filtration system that prevents the fumes and chemicals from spray paints from entering your body.

What you need to know about using a respirator

When using a respirator, you need to remember that it must protect your nose and mouth from inhaling the toxic and harmful fumes from the spray paint. Therefore, if you find that you can still smell or even taste paint after wearing the spray paint mask, then you must stop what you’re doing immediately and go to another room. You must also purchase a new respirator that offers you the protection that you need.

Respirators are designed to provide you with respiratory protection, and it would be best if you wore one when doing any kind of spray painting project. Please refrain from wearing a regular surgical mask because it won’t offer you the protection that you need.

Different Types of Paint Respirators

Given below is a list of our top five paint respirators. We love these products because they cover a wide range of requirements for different kinds of customers, from being cost-efficient and budget-friendly to reusable and dual-purpose.

Please note, however, that this respirator is a disposable spray paint mask. It is also highly affordable!

How to Choose the Right Mask

Choosing the right mask for spray painting is important because your protective gear prevents unwanted substances and fumes from entering your respiratory system. To choose the right mask, you need to keep the type of project you’re doing in mind. In this case, it is spray painting.

Both half-face and full-face respirator masks work in this scenario, but we’d recommend choosing a half-face mask if you can. This is because full-face masks often come with a built-in lens to cover your eyes, and this can become covered in spray paint after some time, resulting in you needing to stop your work and clean the lens. Therefore, it would be best if you chose a half-face and goggles instead so that you don’t have to worry about stopping and cleaning the full-face lens every few minutes.

Conclusion

In this article, we took you through a list of the top 15 best spray paint masks. Spray painting is fun and rewarding, but undertaking a spray paint project without protective gear is a bad idea! We made sure to include masks that cater to a wide range of budgets, making sure to keep comfort and breathability in mind.

The Ultimate Guide to Painting Inside a Fireplace and What Paints You Should Use

November 25, 2021 By Jim Bettesworth

There is nothing better during the winter months than relaxing beside the fireplace as it warms the room. However, you may find that your fireplace is in need of some care and maintenance or perhaps you want to give it a completely new paint job.

In this guide, we’ve gathered everything you need to know when it comes to painting the inside of your fireplace including what kind of paint you should use depending on what kind of fireplace you have, how you should paint your fireplace correctly, and the best ways to take care of it once you start using the fireplace again.

We’ve also included a detailed FAQ at the end of this guide where we answer the most commonly asked questions so you can learn what to expect when it comes to renovating your space.

Wood burning fireplaces

The most commonly used fireplace is a wood-burning fireplace. Usually, wood-burning fireplaces are brick-lined but you can also get metal-lined fireplaces as well. It may not seem like it makes much of a difference but the type of fireplace you have makes all the difference when it comes to the paint that you need to use on its interior.

Brick

The first option is brick and this is the most commonly seen kind of fireplace within the US. What is great about brick fireplaces is that they are extremely heat-resistant whilst also boasting a simple structure which makes them easier to work on and maintain.

When it comes to deciding what kind of paint you need to use, you should consider latex paint that can withstand temperatures of up to 1,200F degrees that has a silicone resin within its base. This will ensure that the color maintains its integrity whilst also allowing you the flexibility to apply it along the sides of the fireplace interior.

Metal

If your fireplace is newer then it most likely has a metal structure. Although these can be more cost-effective, there are some issues when it comes to painting over metal with the main problem being that it takes a lot of coats before the paint will stick onto the surface. Therefore, when looking for paint, you’ll have to invest in a paint that has been formulated for use on metal surfaces.

Not only will this ensure that the paint will be able to withstand the high heat that the metal will be exposed to, but it can also be costly to purchase the paint. Due to the nature of metal, it’s best to choose a paint that has a matte finish rather than a gloss or glaze to get the best results.

Supplies

After you have selected the correct kind of paint, it’s important to make sure that you purchase the appropriate safety equipment and gear before you begin to paint the inside of your fireplace. Regardless of what kind of fireplace you have, there are pieces of gear that you will need which include a face mask, protective clothing that you don’t mind getting stained, and rubber gloves to prevent any harmful substance from getting on your hands.

You should make sure that you have each of these items before you maintain or paint your fireplace as this will ensure that you are not at risk from any of the ash, or creosote that may be in the flue of the chimney. Depending on what you plan to do with your fireplace, there may be certain products that you want to purchase when repainting or maintaining the appearance of your fireplace interior.

This may include brick patching compounds such as mortar, a hearth cleaner as well as a variety of liquid and paste polishes. Making sure you have everything you need and knowing how long it will take will mean that you can plan and time everything perfectly. If you are working to a deadline then this can be extremely helpful as there are certain processes such as applying mortar that can take weeks to complete due to the curing process.

How to paint the inside of a fireplace

Now that you know what paint you need and have gathered up your supplies, this section delves into how you need to paint inside the fireplace correctly in order to give you the best results. Here is the best way to paint the inside of your fireplace with ease:

Cleaning the area

The first step is to clean the area thoroughly to ensure that the surface is smooth and even in order to boost a better result. However, simply sweeping the walls is not good enough as you will have to ensure that all ash has been removed from the floors and side with a cloth as well as vacuuming any remaining ash that is difficult to reach.

If there are pieces of ash or soot that are refusing to come off then using a substance such as trisodium phosphate will help soften it up and then it can be removed with a steel brush. If you have to do this, ensure that you wash the area thoroughly afterward. When you are confident that the ash has been completely removed, go over all areas with a wet cloth so the surface has been thoroughly washed and cleaned before moving on to the next step.

Sanding the surface

Once the area is completely clean, you should sand the surface thoroughly so it is smooth and even. Making sure that you sand each brick will mean that the primer and paint will be applied easily and produce the best results. The best way to do this is by using sandpaper that has between 100 to 220 grit.

Using the lower grit first will ensure that you get the tough sanding out the way whilst the higher grit means that you can finesse the finer details on the surface. While using sandpaper, you can also use other sanding tools such as a sanding block or a foam-sanding sponge. If you don’t want to go through strenuous labor, you can invest in a power sander which will take a huge amount of the manual labor involved away from you whilst also ensuring that you have more consistent results.

Mixing the paint

Hand pouring brown liquid in bucket with white paint

You’ll now have to mix the paint to ensure that you have the right consistency as well as meaning that it is the right kind of paint that you should use in your fireplace. When choosing your paint, make sure that it can withstand high temperatures of up to 1,200F degrees so it doesn’t melt or cause problems down the line.

It’s important that you use a proper paint mixing tool in order to ensure that it has been thoroughly mixed properly. If you are planning to use a primer, make sure that the primer has been tinted slightly to reflect the color of the paint. This is incredibly important if you are planning to use dark color paint.

Applying the paint

Once the paint has been mixed correctly, it’s time to apply the paint using a nylon brush. Make sure that you are using a brush that is inexpensive and can be thrown away after you are done with it. This is because you don’t need to worry about the details as much as you paint.

Some things you need to bear in mind include cleaning up any spillages or drips using a damp cloth immediately to ensure that there are no marks when the paint has dried. It’s always best to apply multiple thin layers of paint in order to build on the color and provide better coverage with no unevenness rather than a couple of thick surfaces that look blotchy when the paint has dried.

Letting it dry

Lastly, it’s important to make sure that you give the paint plenty of time to dry before using the fireplace. This will ensure that the paint won’t melt or drip when you start your fire. You’ll need to apply more layers of paint if you have a metal surface within your fireplace whereas a brick fireplace may only require a couple of coats of paint.

Painting mortar on a brick fireplace

One of the most popular materials that are applied to brick fireplaces is mortar as it can provide a base for you to paint over or allow you to provide an antique appearance if left undisturbed once applied. However, there are ways that you can apply mortar that ensures you get the best results whatever you decide to do in order to enhance your fireplace’s appearance.

Painting with mortar is extremely time-consuming so bear this in mind when you are planning how long the project will take, especially if you are working to a deadline. This will ensure that you give plenty of time for the mortar to complete cure and dry.

If you are planning to paint over your mortar with a color then make sure you have left plenty of time for it to cure as painting over the mortar while it is still wet won’t give you the best results and can leave all kinds of problems such as marks and unevenness on the surface. Here are some tips that you should consider when painting mortar onto your brick fireplace:

Curing

One of the most important parts of painting mortar is the curing time which can take between 3 to 4 weeks making it the most time-consuming portion of the process. The curing will ensure that the substance has fully bonded and is ready to be painted on. Before you apply any primer or paint, however, make sure that all debris and dust has been removed with a vacuum or damp cloth to prevent any bubbles or marks when the paint has dried.

Applying primer

When the mortar has finished drying, you will need to coat it with a primer before you apply any paint. You can use any acrylic primer which will make the surface ready to paint on. The primer will need around 4 to 5 hours to dry meaning that it isn’t as long as the mortar curing time. When you are confident that the primer has been applied, the surface is ready to accept latex paint.

Coating with paint

Choose a latex paint that is suitable to be applied on mortar. Latex paint has a high level of flexibility meaning that it is more adaptable to any kind of surface and it will give you the smooth finish that you need. When you are applying the paint, make sure you apply multiple thin coats of paint rather than one or two thick coats. This will give you a more consistent and clean finish with fewer mistakes.

Maintaining and taking care of your fireplace

Now that you have finished painting the inside of your fireplace, it is important to know how to properly take care of it. This will help to keep its appearance while also ensuring that you are being as safe as possible when you actually use your fireplace. In this section, we’ll be delving into the various tips you need to bear in mind when it comes to taking care of your fireplace.

Cleaning out the ash

The first thing you will need to do is make sure that you clean out the ash from your fireplace on a regular basis. This is because it is highly unsafe to have large piles of ash when you are using the fireplace.

Therefore, you need to ensure that you are emptying the fireplace of all ash after two or three burnings. Not only does this ensure that you are being safe, but it will also keep your fireplace looking pristine and well-kept.

Cleaning the inside of a fireplace

Drop cloth

The next aspect of fireplace maintenance you should bear in mind is using a drop cloth in order to protect the areas that you don’t want to paint over. If you don’t have a drop cloth then you can use some cardboard sheets. It’s important to make sure that you do this to generate neat and tidy results when applying the paint.

Fireplace temperature

One of the most important aspects of fireplace maintenance is making sure that the fireplace is completely cold before conducting any work on the interior such as a fresh coat of paint or sweeping up the ash. This will ensure that you are being as safe as possible and not posing a risk to yourself or the house.

Limewashing

Limewashing is an affordable technique that allows you to create an antiqued effect on your bricks if you are wanting to strive for a vintage appearance. Limewashing is also known as whitewashing and there are many products available such as Romabio’s limewash which can give you the desired effect without having to spend a lot of money.

Metal parts

If you have a fireplace that contains metal parts then it is impossible to ensure that it has been entirely cleaned of any dirt, grease, and rust. This will mean that it is ready to be painted on if needed without causing any issues or safety hazards.

Standard paint

Lastly, it’s important to bear in mind that you can use regular paint should you wish although to get the best results, it is best to use non-toxic paints that can help to reduce any risks of safety issues such as indoor air pollution as well as being a lot easier to clean.

FAQ

Can you repaint the inside of a gas fireplace?

Repainting the inside of a gas fireplace is absolutely possible, particularly when you’re choosing the paint. Rustoleum is the best choice as it has the heat-resistance needed to withstand high temperatures as well as the versatility to be used in any kind of fireplace interior.

Is painting a fireplace a fire hazard?

Painting a fireplace is naturally a fire hazard due to the nature of the project so it is crucial that you make sure that the area is completely cool before applying any paint or primer to the surface. Not only does this mean that you are being as safe as possible but it also means that the paint isn’t going to suffer when it does dry as incorrect painting can cause flaking and marks that are difficult to remove.

Does painting brick devalue home?

Some people think that painting on brick can decrease the value of a home; however, the opposite can be true. Painting over brick, especially if it has become stained from years of use can actually increase the value of a home when done well. In order to generate the best results, make sure that you research what paint will work best and choose a color that will go well with the room.

Conclusion

In conclusion, making sure that you do as much research into which paint is best for your fireplace will ensure that you are being as safe as possible while also promoting the best results possible. This will help to prevent any paint from flaking off whilst allowing the paint to resist the high temperatures when you are using your fireplace.

This guide has given you everything you need to know about painting your fireplace so now you can do it by yourself with confidence whilst also ensuring that you can take care of it correctly to avoid any accidents.
