The easiest way to combine two pictures in Canva is to place them in a two-cell grid. Upload both images, open Elements, choose a two-column grid, drag one picture into each cell, adjust the crops, and select Share → Download to save the result as a JPG, PNG, or PDF. Canva Free is generally enough for a basic two-photo collage, provided you use free layouts and media.
“Combine” can mean several things: placing photos side by side, stacking them vertically, arranging them freely, or layering one over another. The method below starts with the most common result—a clean side-by-side image—then covers the other options.

The quickest way to combine two pictures side by side
Canva’s official image-combining workflow uses a collage design, a grid or frames, uploaded or library images, cropping, and export. The exact labels and placement can vary slightly between Canva’s web editor and its iOS or Android apps, but the basic process remains the same. See Canva’s image-combining guide for the current overview.
- Open Canva and create a design. Choose a blank design, a photo-collage project, or a suitable template. Select a canvas that matches the intended use—for example, a square Instagram post, a landscape presentation, or custom dimensions.
- Upload both pictures. Open Uploads and import the images from your device, or select suitable images from Canva’s media library.
- Open Elements. Search for Grids and choose a two-section vertical grid. A two-column grid creates left and right areas of equal size.
- Place the pictures. Drag the first image into the left cell and the second into the right cell. Canva will fit each image into its cell, normally by cropping rather than stretching it.
- Correct the crop. Double-click a picture inside its cell, then drag the image to move the subject. Use the available crop controls or zoom adjustment to keep faces, products, text, or other important details visible. Click outside the image when the crop looks right, then repeat for the second picture.
- Refine the design. Adjust the space between the cells, change the background color, add borders, or insert captions such as “Before” and “After.”
- Export it. Select Share → Download, choose JPG, PNG, or PDF, and download the completed design.
The result is one Canva design and, if you choose JPG or PNG, one image file containing both pictures. It is a combined layout—not necessarily a seamless, pixel-level blend of the original photographs.
How to stack two pictures vertically
Use the same process with a two-row grid instead of a two-column grid:
- Create a blank design with a portrait or custom canvas size.
- Open Elements and choose a grid with two horizontal cells.
- Drag the first picture into the upper cell and the second into the lower cell.
- Edit each crop so the important content remains visible.
- Keep the gap between the pictures, or reduce it when they should appear like one continuous document.
A tall canvas usually works best for portrait photos. If both source images are landscape-oriented, forcing them into narrow horizontal cells may produce awkward crops; a wider canvas or manual placement can be better.

How to combine pictures manually without a grid
A grid is fast and keeps the images aligned, but it is not required. Manual placement is more useful when the pictures have different proportions, when one image should be larger, or when you want an uneven collage.

- Start with a blank Canva design.
- Upload both pictures and click or drag each one onto the canvas.
- Resize the pictures from their corners so their proportions remain intact.
- Move them into position using Canva’s alignment guides and Position or layer controls.
- Add a background rectangle or color behind the images if the canvas shows through.
- Use equal padding, aligned edges, or a deliberate overlap to make the layout look intentional.
This approach gives you more control, but alignment takes longer. If the desired result is simply two equal halves, a grid is usually the more reliable choice.
How to overlay one picture on another
For an overlay, place the background picture on the canvas first, then add the second picture above it. Resize and position the foreground image as needed.
- Use Canva’s layer or Position controls to send the intended background backward or bring the foreground forward.
- Adjust Transparency when you want the background to show through the upper image.
- Use Background Remover when you need to isolate a person or object from its original background. Canva currently lists this as a Pro feature.
- For a cutout on its own, Canva’s transparent-background workflow uses PNG export and a transparent-background option, associated with Pro: Canva’s transparent images guide.
Background removal is different from placing two photos in a grid. It creates a layered composition, and the quality of the result depends on the subject, edges, lighting, and original image.

In the Canva iOS or Android app, open Canva, start a new design or collage, and import both pictures from your device gallery. Add a grid or collage layout, place one image in each cell, and use touch gestures to crop, zoom, and reposition the photos. Download or share the finished design from the app.
Mobile controls and labels can differ by device and app version. If a grid or frame is difficult to find, search within Elements for “grid” or “frame,” or use a blank design and position the two images manually.

How to combine two scanned images into one PDF
For scans, create an A4, Letter, or custom document-sized design rather than a social-media canvas.
- Upload both scanned images through Uploads.
- Place them on the page, then scale and crop them so they fit cleanly.
- Use one page when both scans belong together on a single sheet.
- Add a second Canva page when the scans should remain separate pages.
- Select Share → Download and choose PDF.
Do not force two full-page scans onto one page if the text becomes too small to read. A multi-page PDF is often the more useful result.
How to make the two pictures look consistent
- Match the aspect ratio where possible. Similar orientations reduce aggressive cropping.
- Choose the focal point first. Keep faces, product labels, document text, and other essential content away from the crop edge.
- Match visual scale. If one subject appears much larger than the other, the collage can feel unbalanced.
- Use consistent treatment. Apply the same filter or color adjustment to both images when their lighting or color differs noticeably.
- Keep spacing even. Equal padding and border thickness make a simple collage look deliberate.
- Add a divider for comparisons. A thin line or small gap can clarify the separation between “Before” and “After.”
- Use restrained decoration. A neutral background and short labels usually work better than graphics that compete with the photos.
Canva supports cropping, scaling, filters, backgrounds, text, illustrations, and other decorative adjustments as part of the combining workflow. Start with the pictures’ composition before adding those extras.
Canva Free versus Canva Pro
A basic two-picture collage can be made with Canva Free when you use free grids, free templates, your own images, and ordinary export options. Canva Pro is not required simply to put two ordinary photos side by side.
Pro may matter if you need premium templates or media, Background Remover, transparent-background PNG export, Magic Resize, or other paid tools. Canva’s current plan details are available on its pricing page. The US pricing page checked on August 18, 2026 listed Free at US$0 for one person and Pro at US$144 per year for one person before applicable tax; prices can vary by country, billing cycle, promotions, and account context, so confirm the amount shown at checkout.

If Canva asks for payment, check whether the design contains a premium template, photo, graphic, font, or Pro-only tool. Replace premium items with assets marked free, start from a blank design, or export without the paid feature.
Choose the right download format
- JPG: A practical choice for ordinary photographs and smaller files.
- PNG: Usually preferable for screenshots, scans, text-heavy graphics, or designs where sharper edges matter. It does not restore detail that was absent from a low-resolution original.
- PDF: Best when the combined result is intended as a document, handout, or multi-page file.
Choose the canvas dimensions for the final use before arranging the photos. Upload the highest-resolution originals available, avoid enlarging small images substantially, and inspect the downloaded file rather than relying only on the editor preview. Canva cannot create genuine fine detail that a low-resolution source never contained.
Troubleshooting
The photo is cropped badly
Double-click the image inside the grid or frame and reposition it so the focal point is visible. If the frame is too narrow, choose another grid orientation, change the canvas size, crop both originals to a matching ratio beforehand, or use manual placement instead.
The image looks stretched
Resize from a corner rather than dragging a side disproportionately. A grid or frame should crop an image, not distort it; manual resizing can change its proportions if the wrong handle is used.
The downloaded file is blurry
The source may be low resolution, the canvas may be too small, or the image may have been enlarged heavily. Use larger originals, create the design at the intended output size, and avoid unnecessary enlargement. Choose PNG for text-heavy graphics and scans, or JPG when a smaller photographic file is more useful.

One image covers the other
Select the image and use the layer or Position controls to send the intended background backward. If the goal is side by side, replace the manual layout with a two-cell grid.
I cannot find the grid or frame
Open Elements and search for “grids” or “frames.” You may have selected an unrelated graphic, or the app layout may differ. A collage template or manual placement on a blank canvas is a workable fallback.
Canva requests payment
Look for premium markers in the template and media, and check whether you selected Background Remover or transparent-background export. Replace paid assets with free alternatives if you only need a basic collage.
Can I combine more than two pictures?
Yes. Use a grid with more cells, a collage template, or manual placement. As the number of photos increases, choose a canvas large enough to keep each image legible and avoid filling every available space with decoration.

Canva is well suited to quick collages, social graphics, document layouts, and simple overlays. A dedicated editor such as Photopea may be preferable when you need detailed masking and Photoshop-style layer control; PowerPoint or Google Slides can be convenient when the result already belongs in a presentation. Basic collage apps may be faster on a phone but can offer less control over typography, layout, or export. The best option depends on whether speed, precision, editing depth, or mobile convenience matters most.
