Yes—LibreSprite is a practical free and open-source tool for pixel-art sprites, tiles, and frame-by-frame 2D game animation. Its biggest advantage is its GPLv2 license and familiar Aseprite-derived workflow. Its main drawbacks are a smaller ecosystem, less polished distribution, and an older latest stable release: as checked on August 18, 2026, LibreSprite 1.1 is the latest stable release, while 1.2 is listed as a pre-release.

For a hobby project or indie game that needs PNGs, GIFs, or sprite sheets, LibreSprite can be enough. Choose Aseprite if you want the most established and current upstream workflow; consider Pixelorama if you prefer a newer open-source alternative with MIT licensing.

What is LibreSprite?

LibreSprite is a standalone desktop-oriented pixel-art and animated-sprite editor. It is designed for drawing raster sprites, tiles, palettes, animation frames, and other 2D game artwork.

LibreSprite began as a fork of the last Aseprite commit released under the GNU GPL version 2. It is now developed independently. Calling it “free Aseprite” is useful shorthand, but it is not identical to current Aseprite: features, file behavior, scripting APIs, documentation, and release schedules can differ.

The project targets Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android, although binary availability and platform quality vary. The project also lists LibreSprite Online in the 1.2 pre-release notes.

Current release status

According to the project’s releases page, checked August 18, 2026:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Latest stable release: 1.1, released December 3, 2023.
  • Current pre-release: v1.2, listed March 2, 2026.

The repository and its GitHub organization also show later development activity, so it is inaccurate to call LibreSprite abandoned. However, the relatively old stable release and smaller distribution ecosystem mean production teams should pin a known version, retain the installer or archive, and test the exact build they plan to use.

What can LibreSprite do?

Its official project description identifies the features most relevant to game art:

  • Layered, frame-based sprite editing.
  • Real-time animation previews.
  • Onion skinning for comparing adjacent frames.
  • Built-in and custom palettes.
  • Multiple sprites open or edited at once.
  • Tiled drawing for patterns and textures.
  • Pixel-focused tools including filled contour, polygon, and shading tools.
  • Support for multiple sprite and animation file types.
  • JavaScript/V8 and Lua scripting support described in the 1.0 release notes.
  • Pen-pressure support and additional translation work noted for the 1.2 pre-release.

These capabilities make LibreSprite suitable for frame-by-frame raster animation. It is not a replacement for skeletal or rigged animation systems such as Spine, DragonBones, Godot’s 2D skeleton tools, Unity’s 2D animation tools, or a 3D package.

Who should use it?

LibreSprite is a good fit for

  • Beginners learning pixel art and sprite animation.
  • Hobbyist and indie game developers.
  • Educators and open-source advocates.
  • Artists who want an Aseprite-like frame-and-layer workflow without paying for proprietary software.
  • Projects that only need common raster outputs such as PNGs, GIFs, or sprite sheets.
  • Users comfortable downloading releases from GitHub or compiling software.

Choose something else if you need

  • A polished commercial support channel or guaranteed binary support.
  • The newest Aseprite features, integrations, plug-ins, or scripting behavior.
  • A conventional one-click installer for every operating system.
  • Vector drawing, advanced painting, high-resolution illustration, compositing, or character rigging.

How to install LibreSprite

Use an official release

  1. Open the official LibreSprite repository.
  2. Open Releases.
  3. Prefer the latest stable release unless you specifically need a pre-release feature.
  4. Download the asset matching your operating system and CPU architecture.
  5. Keep the downloaded archive or installer for future project maintenance.

Use the official GitHub releases page rather than third-party “free Aseprite” or LibreSprite download sites. Open-source software is not automatically safe when obtained from an unofficial mirror.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platform experience is not uniform. The project’s release notes have described macOS support as not fully supported in the 1.0 release history. Test the official macOS binary before attempting a source build. Android source builds require Android Studio and the separate ls-android-deps repository.

Build from source on Linux

The project’s installation guide requires a recursive clone:

git clone --recursive https://github.com/LibreSprite/LibreSprite
cd LibreSprite

If you already cloned the repository:

cd LibreSprite
git pull
git submodule update --init --recursive

Documented Debian/Ubuntu dependencies include CMake, Ninja, a C++14-capable compiler, and libraries for CURL, FreeType, GIF, JPEG, PNG, SDL2, TinyXML2, Node, zlib, libarchive, and related components:

rm -rf build

The documented Windows procedure uses MSYS2’s mingw32.exe and 32-bit MinGW package names. Because that workflow may not match every current Windows setup, check the repository’s current INSTALL.md before starting. The macOS instructions likewise include a CMake build using an Xcode SDK path, but the official binary is the sensible first option.

How to make a 2D game animation

LibreSprite’s core model is straightforward:

  • A sprite is the image or asset you edit.
  • A layer separates elements such as a body, weapon, shadow, or effect.
  • A frame or cel is one time step in the animation.
  • An animation tag or named range, where available in your build, identifies sequences such as idle, run, jump, or attack.
  1. Create the sprite. Choose a project-appropriate canvas such as 16×16, 32×32, or 64×64. Use transparency if the game requires alpha.
  2. Choose a palette. A restricted, reusable palette keeps frames visually consistent. Save the palette rather than selecting unrelated colors for every pose.
  3. Organize layers. Separate major elements, and lock or hide layers that should not be edited. Layer organization matters more once many frames exist.
  4. Draw the first pose. Establish the character’s foot position, pivot, center, or other origin expected by the game engine.
  5. Add frames. Duplicate a frame and edit changed pixels instead of redrawing everything. Use onion skinning to compare neighboring poses.
  6. Preview the animation. Use the real-time preview at several speeds. Watch for popping outlines, inconsistent feet, accidental palette changes, and frames that linger too long.
  7. Name animation ranges. If your build provides animation tags, name sequences clearly: idle, walk, hurt, and attack.
  8. Save the editable project. Keep LibreSprite’s native project file. Exports are delivery files, not replacements for the source.
  9. Export for the engine. Use a PNG sequence or sprite sheet according to the engine’s requirements, then test the actual exported asset in the game.

Do not resize pixel art with smoothing or interpolation unless that is intentional. Keep frame dimensions consistent, and inspect the animation at its real in-game display size.

Exporting a sprite sheet

A sprite sheet is one image containing multiple frames. The game engine divides it into cells and displays those cells sequentially.

Before exporting, decide:

  • Whether frames run horizontally, vertically, or in a grid.
  • Whether every frame uses a fixed cell size.
  • Whether frames are trimmed to their visible bounds.
  • How much padding separates cells.
  • What order frames appear in: chronological, row-major, or column-major.
  • Whether transparent alpha is preserved.
  • Whether hidden layers are excluded.
  • Whether the engine needs metadata in addition to the image.
  • Whether each animation should be exported as a separate sheet.

The general concepts of fixed dimensions, offsets, frame sizes, visible layers, and selected animation ranges are described in Aseprite’s sprite-sheet documentation. Since LibreSprite builds can differ, verify the exact export options and menu labels in the version you installed.

The expected result is normally a transparent PNG sprite sheet or a sequence of PNG frames with consistent dimensions, known ordering, no unintended background, and crisp pixels. GIF is useful for previews and sharing, but PNG or a sprite sheet is usually more appropriate for a game pipeline.

Export problems and fixes

Frames appear in the wrong order

Check the selected animation range and whether the exporter uses row-major or column-major order. Import the sheet into a frame viewer or back into LibreSprite to inspect it. A fixed grid is often safest for simple engines that do not read metadata.

The sprite has a background color

Confirm the canvas supports transparency, hide any background layer, and export PNG. View the file against a checkerboard or contrasting background so transparent and opaque pixels are easy to distinguish.

Frames are cropped

Avoid trimming when the engine expects fixed-size cells. Preserve a consistent canvas and origin, and add padding when adjacent frames touch or bleed into one another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The character jitters

Align the feet, pivot, or center across frames. Automatic trimming can remove different amounts from each pose; use fixed-size frames unless the engine also receives the resulting offsets.

  • CONNECTION: includes USB-C cable to connect to Windows/Mac computers with DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 3 or 4 input (computers without DP Alt or TB 3 or 4 input require additional cables)

The animation speed is wrong

Check frame durations in the project, then check whether the engine ignores embedded timing. If it does, set playback speed in the engine itself.

The native file will not open in another editor

Do not assume complete round-trip compatibility between LibreSprite and current Aseprite. Export standard PNGs or sprite sheets when moving between applications, and keep backups of both the native project and delivery assets.

Licensing: can you use the artwork commercially?

LibreSprite’s repository states that the editor is distributed under GPLv2. That license applies to LibreSprite’s program and source code; it does not automatically place artwork created with the program under GPLv2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep these questions separate:

  • The editor: LibreSprite’s source and binaries are governed by the project’s GPLv2 terms.
  • Your artwork: You generally control the copyright and licensing of original art you create.
  • Third-party resources: Brushes, palettes, themes, scripts, and other resources may have separate licenses.
  • Redistribution: Modifying and distributing LibreSprite itself, or a bundled build, can create GPL source-code and notice obligations.

Using LibreSprite to create assets for a commercial game is different from redistributing a modified copy of LibreSprite. Read the GPLv2 text and inspect the licenses of bundled resources before distributing a modified editor or proprietary derivative.

LibreSprite vs. Aseprite

Criterion LibreSprite Aseprite
Price Free The official FAQ lists a $19.99 USD minimum pledge for the 1.x series, checked August 18, 2026.
License GPLv2 Official binaries and distribution follow Aseprite’s licensing terms.
Origin Fork of the last GPLv2 Aseprite commit; independently developed Current upstream project
Release status 1.1 stable; 1.2 pre-release as of August 18, 2026 Official repository listed v1.3.17.2 on April 29, 2026
Platforms Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android targets Windows, macOS, Ubuntu, plus a Steam key according to the official purchase page
Best for Zero-cost, open-source workflows Users who want the polished, current upstream workflow
Main trade-off Less predictable distribution and maintenance Purchase cost and proprietary redistribution terms

Choose Aseprite when current documentation, established compatibility, official binaries, and ongoing upstream development justify the price. Aseprite’s official FAQ also distinguishes creating commercial assets from redistributing its compiled software.

LibreSprite vs. Pixelorama

Pixelorama is another free and open-source pixel-art and animation editor. It uses the MIT license and offers official distribution for Windows, Linux, macOS, and the web; its Android build is described as experimental in the installation documentation.

Pixelorama may be the better choice if you want a more actively documented open-source alternative, web access, or a permissive MIT license. Its non-Steam versions are free, while the Steam edition is paid and adds Steam conveniences such as automatic updates, cloud synchronization, or achievements rather than locking the core editor behind a separate “Pro” tier. Choose LibreSprite instead if you specifically prefer its Aseprite-derived interface or legacy behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decision guide

  • Need zero cost and GPLv2? Choose LibreSprite.
  • Want the most established Aseprite workflow and can pay? Choose Aseprite.
  • Want a newer open-source alternative with MIT licensing and broad official distribution? Try Pixelorama.
  • Need skeletal or rigged animation? Use a dedicated animation system; LibreSprite can create the raster artwork but is not the complete rigging pipeline.

The practical pipeline is:

LibreSprite project → PNG/GIF/sprite sheet → game engine import → animation playback
