Best for most Android users: Sketchbook. Choose Infinite Painter for a polished painting workflow, ibis Paint X for manga and anime, Clip Studio Paint for comic production, and Krita for a powerful free option on tablets. The right app depends on what you draw, whether you use a phone or tablet, your stylus, and how you want to pay.

This is a use-case comparison, not a claim that every app was independently tested on every Android device. Features, prices, and stylus behavior can vary by app version, country, store, and hardware; check the current Google Play listing before paying.

At a glance: which Android drawing app should you choose?

App Best for Phone or tablet fit Free or paid model Main trade-off
Sketchbook Everyday sketching and general illustration Both; a stylus-equipped tablet is more comfortable for detailed work Check the current Android listing for edition and in-app purchase details Not a specialized comic-production suite
Infinite Painter Mobile-first digital painting Best suited to tablets, though positioned for mobile devices Seven-day free trial; one-time purchase unlocks certain features, according to the official product page Test large documents on your device before relying on it for production
ibis Paint X Manga, anime, line art Both; a strong phone-first choice Free version, separate paid Android edition, and optional premium plans; regional pricing varies Edition and premium distinctions can be confusing
Clip Studio Paint Professional comics and illustration Tablet recommended for serious work; Android phone compatibility has a six-inch display recommendation Subscription-oriented; check current plans More complex and costly than casual sketching calls for
Krita Free, desktop-style painting Large Android tablet; phone interface may feel cramped Free and open-source; confirm the official Android distribution route Steeper learning curve and Android feature differences
Concepts Infinite-canvas design and visual planning Both, with more room on a tablet Free tier with paid tools or subscription structure; check current limits Not primarily a natural-media painting app
MediBang Paint Free comic-making and cloud-oriented workflows Both Free starting point; account, cloud, and premium details may apply Cloud functions and materials may involve restrictions or account requirements
ArtFlow Simpler Android painting workspace Tablet-oriented use is the more practical fit Current pricing and feature limits not stated by the cited product page Verify current listing and update status before choosing
Tayasui Sketches Minimalist, natural-media-style sketching Both; more canvas area helps Current Android pricing and feature split not stated by the cited product page Less suited to complex production workflows
HiPaint Budget-oriented mobile painting Phones and tablets, according to its Google Play listing Check the live listing for current in-app purchases Less established production ecosystem than specialist suites

How to choose an Android drawing app

Start with the kind of work you want to make, then check whether the app supports your device and preferred input. A long feature list alone does not guarantee that an app feels responsive or is comfortable to use.

Bopomofo Stylus(5 Pcs),2-in-1 Stylus Pen for Touchscreen,Capacitive Stylus
  • 【Stylus for Touch Screen】This stylus can be used on touch screen, designed to replace your fingers, the stylus can free up your fingers and provide higher sensitivity and response on the screen.
  • 【Capacitive stylus】This is a capacitive stylus (battery-free, requires no charging, and functions like a fingertip)—not an active stylus. It does not support pressure sensitivity or palm rejection. However, it allows for tapping, scrolling, note-taking, and drawing on touchscreens; if you require professional-grade drawing capabilities on an iPad, please choose an active stylus instead.
  • 【2-in-1 Stylus Pen】This stylus features two different tips: a flexible transparent disc tip and a rubber tip. Applying moderate pressure when using the rubber tip ensures full contact with the screen—especially on screens with protective films—thereby enabling stable signal transmission. The combination of the rubber tip and the disc tip offers two distinct touch experiences. Please note that the plastic piece on the transparent disc is an integral part of the tip and cannot be removed.
  • 【Works On Capacitive Touch Screens】Compatible with iPad, iPad Air/mini, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Android tablets, Kindle and smartphones. Also works over most screen protectors — glide, no scratch. The stylus is used to replace your fingers on a touchscreen, Avoid rubbing your fingers and leaving fingerprints on touchscreen devices. If it cannot be used for writing on some devices, This may be due to limitations in the settings of touchscreen devices. If you cannot find a solution, please contact us at any time, and we will help you resolve the issue.
  • 【Multiple Usage Scenarios】Whether you are taking notes in class, reviewing documents at work, drawing creative designs, or enjoying mobile games, this universal stylus pen delivers a smooth and comfortable touch experience. It is ideal for writing, sketching, annotating, scrolling, and precise screen control on tablets and smartphones. From daily tasks to creative projects, this stylus helps you capture ideas anytime and anywhere.
  • Drawing feel: Check whether your device and active stylus work with pressure and tilt, and whether the app offers stroke smoothing or stabilization. Palm rejection and stylus-only input depend on hardware, software, and app settings.
  • Canvas and documents: Look for the canvas size and layer capacity you need, autosave or recovery behavior, and export formats such as PNG, JPEG, or PSD. Do not assume desktop and Android versions have identical limits or file compatibility.
  • Brushes and workflow: Decide whether you need natural-media brushes, custom brushes, selection and transform tools, rulers, perspective guides, symmetry, animation, or timelapse.
  • Specialist tools: Manga panels, speech balloons, screen tones, infinite canvases, pixel grids, and collaboration tools matter only for particular kinds of work.
  • Cost and restrictions: Distinguish a genuinely free workflow from an ad-supported version, trial, one-time unlock, subscription, paid materials, or account-dependent cloud service.
  • Device fit: Screen size, RAM, processor, stylus protocol, keyboard shortcuts, and landscape layout can matter as much as app compatibility.

The 10 best drawing apps for Android

1. Sketchbook — best overall for straightforward sketching

Sketchbook is the easiest default recommendation for artists who want a clean workspace without giving up core illustration tools. Its official app page lists layers and blend modes, customizable brushes, rulers, symmetry tools, Predictive Stroke smoothing, and stylus pressure and tilt support.

It suits beginners, hobbyists, quick sketches, and general illustration. Its uncluttered approach is appealing when you want to draw rather than configure a complex production workspace. Stylus capabilities still depend on the Android device and pen combination; a passive capacitive stylus will not provide the same pressure or tilt input as a compatible active pen.

Cost: The current Android edition and any in-app purchases should be checked in Google Play. Skip it if: Your main need is specialized comic-page production, animation, or a verified desktop-style professional pipeline.

2. Infinite Painter — best for polished mobile painting

Infinite Painter is a strong choice for users who want a painting-first app with a customizable interface. Its official product page describes nearly 200 brushes, brush creation, pressure-curve adjustment, layers, selections, and timelapse recording. It also offers a seven-day free trial; certain features are locked behind a one-time purchase afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a useful option for finished illustration and for people seeking a mobile painting workflow reminiscent of Procreate. That comparison describes the general style of use, not feature-for-feature equivalence. Try a large canvas and several layers on your own tablet before making it your primary production app.

Cost: The official page describes a one-time purchase after the trial, but the current local price should be checked in Google Play. Skip it if: You need a free app with no paid unlock or a specialized comic-production suite.

3. ibis Paint X — best for manga and anime art

ibis Paint X is a feature-rich option for manga, anime, line art, and social-media illustration, including on phones. The official product page lists brushes, materials, fonts, filters, palettes, and manga-oriented tools. Its feature table is marked current through April 2026.

Pay close attention to the product names: ibis Paint X is the free Android version, while the official site also lists a separate paid ibisPaint Android edition and optional premium plans. The site lists reference prices of $15.99 for the paid Android version, $2.99 per month, and $27.99 per year for premium options; it warns that prices vary by country and store. These are not universal prices, and the live listing may differ. Check the current app description for the free edition’s advertising and restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: Artists who want a deep toolset, manga resources, and a phone-friendly workspace. Skip it if: You dislike a busy interface, advertising, or subscription options.

4. Clip Studio Paint — best for professional comics and illustration

Clip Studio Paint is the most production-focused choice here for comic artists and illustrators who need specialized inking and manga workflows. It makes more sense for multi-page projects or artists already using Clip Studio Paint elsewhere than for someone who only wants a casual sketchpad.

The official Android compatibility guidance recommends a smartphone display of at least six inches. That is a compatibility recommendation, not a guarantee that a phone will be comfortable for serious drawing. A tablet is the more practical choice for detailed work. Android use is subscription-oriented; check the current plans for the available plan, trial, device limits, and edition details before subscribing.

Skip it if: You are a beginner seeking a simple sketching experience, work mainly on a small phone, or do not want a subscription.

5. Krita — best free, open-source painting app for tablets

Krita brings a powerful, desktop-style painting environment to Android and is the strongest choice on this list for artists who want a free, open-source tool rather than a normal subscription. It is a natural fit for serious painting on a large tablet, especially if you also use Krita on desktop.

Its desktop-oriented interface can feel cramped on a phone and overwhelming to new users. Android availability and distribution should be confirmed on the official Krita mobile download page; do not assume that every desktop feature works identically on Android. The Krita site provides the broader project information.

Concepts is for visual thinking as much as conventional drawing. Its infinite canvas makes it useful for product and industrial design, architecture, storyboards, diagrams, mind maps, and rough layouts where ideas need to spread out spatially.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not the first choice for realistic painting, anime tools, or comic production. Concepts has a free tier and paid tools or subscription options; check the current pricing page and Android listing for free-tier limits, export formats, and cloud features. Visit the official site for the product overview.

7. MediBang Paint — best free starting point for comics

MediBang Paint offers an accessible route into comic and manga creation, with tutorials, materials, fonts, and cloud-oriented features. Its Android page describes the Android version and promotes group-project functionality; its cloud page explains cloud-related services.

Check which features require an account or paid tier, including cloud functions, storage, and premium materials. Cloud sync, online publishing, collaboration, backup, and version history are different things; do not treat one as a guarantee of the others. Export important projects locally or to a separate backup service.

Best fit: Beginners exploring comic workflows and artists who value online resources. Skip it if: You want the most polished professional interface or prefer not to rely on accounts and cloud services.

8. ArtFlow — a focused alternative for Android painting

ArtFlow is a long-standing Android painting option to consider if you want a more focused workspace than a desktop-style suite. 9. Tayasui Sketches — best for a minimalist sketchbook feel

Tayasui Sketches is aimed at relaxed sketching and a natural-media feel rather than complex production. A simple interface can be a benefit for beginners, casual drawing, and watercolor-style experiments.

The product page is the vendor’s overview, but Android pricing, current feature parity, and version details should be checked in the live listing. Do not assume the Android edition includes every feature available on other platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: You need a large layer stack, comic tools, animation, or a verified workflow for high-resolution production files.

10. HiPaint — best budget-oriented Procreate-style alternative to investigate

HiPaint is listed on Google Play as a drawing and painting app for Android phones and tablets. Its mobile painting approach may appeal to budget-conscious users looking for a familiar, tablet-friendly interface, but an interface resemblance does not make it equivalent to Procreate.

Check the current Google Play listing for its in-app purchases, advertising, export limits, and privacy information. User feedback about value or comparisons with other apps is anecdotal, not a substitute for testing your own device and workflow.

Best fit: Beginners comparing mobile painting options. Skip it if: Your work depends on a mature desktop ecosystem, established cross-platform file compatibility, or clear long-term production support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best choices by art style and budget

  • General sketching: Start with Sketchbook; move to Infinite Painter if you want a more painting-focused toolset.
  • Manga and anime: Try ibis Paint X for a broad feature set, Clip Studio Paint for professional comic production, or MediBang Paint for a free comic-oriented entry point.
  • Free painting on a tablet: Choose Krita if you are comfortable with a more desktop-like interface; compare Sketchbook or MediBang Paint if you want a gentler start.
  • Infinite-canvas notes and design: Choose Concepts rather than a raster-painting app.
  • Minimalist, natural-media sketching: Try Tayasui Sketches; confirm current Android features first.
  • No recurring subscription: Krita is free and open-source; Infinite Painter’s official page describes a one-time purchase for certain features after its trial. The paid ibisPaint edition is another option, but check the current listing and regional price.

Phone or tablet: choose for the work, not just compatibility

A phone is convenient for quick sketches, practice, line art, and small social-media illustrations. Apps such as ibis Paint X, Sketchbook, and MediBang Paint have workflows that can suit smaller screens, but detail work is naturally constrained by available canvas and interface space.

A tablet is more comfortable for large canvases, many layers, comic pages, and sustained illustration. Krita and Clip Studio Paint are particularly tablet-oriented choices; Infinite Painter and Concepts also benefit from extra screen area. A device that installs an app may still struggle with large files because of limited memory, graphics performance, or Android-specific interface constraints.

Before building a workflow around an app, make a modest test canvas, then try a larger document with several layers. Watch for brush lag, slow autosave, delayed export, or crashes. Large, high-resolution canvases and many layers put more demand on memory, and exporting a large PNG or PSD may take longer.

Stylus, S Pen, and palm rejection: what to check

“Stylus support” can mean anything from basic finger-like input to pressure-sensitive drawing. A passive capacitive pen generally behaves like a fingertip; pressure, tilt, palm rejection, and shortcut buttons require compatible active hardware and app support. Check the exact tablet, pen protocol, Android version, and app settings rather than assuming that support for one stylus applies to another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung notes that S Pen functions can vary by device model and software version in its support documentation. Sketchbook specifically lists pressure and tilt support, but the result still depends on compatible hardware. If you draw with your hand resting on the screen, test palm rejection on your own device before starting a long project.

File handling, backups, and cross-device work

For work you may revise or hand off, check more than image export. Confirm whether the Android app can export layered PSD or another usable project format, and whether it supports the vector, TIFF, or timelapse output you need. File formats and features can differ between Android and desktop editions, even when an app exists on both platforms.

Cloud sync is not automatically a backup. It may synchronize files, publish work, support collaboration, or provide storage without offering version history or recovery. Export important projects to local storage or a separate cloud-storage provider, and keep an editable project file as well as a flattened image when the app permits it.

Other Android apps for specialized needs

  • PENUP: Worth considering for casual drawing and Samsung S Pen use; available functions still depend on the device.
  • Pixel Studio: A more direct fit for pixel art than a general painting app.
  • Sketchar: Consider it for guided drawing practice and AR-assisted learning.

Adobe Fresco is not included in the Android recommendations here; confirm current Android availability before selecting it, since coverage has identified it as unavailable on the platform. One reference is Best Apps for Android’s drawing-app roundup.
