These ten mural experiences span a preserved political monument, neighborhood traditions, rooftop art, a curated street-art museum and a tribute to Lisbon’s fado culture. They are a curated itinerary—not an objective ranking—and outdoor artworks can be repainted, weathered or temporarily inaccessible. Check each destination’s current map, tour page and on-site condition before you go.

1. East Side Gallery, Berlin, Germany

A surviving 1,316-metre section of the Berlin Wall carries more than 100 large-scale works in an open-air gallery along the Spree in Friedrichshain. After the Wall fell, 118 artists from 21 countries began painting the section; the gallery officially opened on 28 September 1990. VisitBerlin gives the address as Mühlenstraße 70–71 and says it is open around the clock. The Berlin State Office for the Preservation of Monuments describes 106 murals, so counts vary by source and definition.

The site’s meaning is inseparable from its historical setting: art occupies a structure that once divided the city. Read the historical background from the Berlin Wall Foundation, then use VisitBerlin for practical orientation. Weather exposure and continuing restoration mean individual works may look different from photographs.

Trabant breaking through the Wall

Birgit Kinder’s image of a Trabant bursting through the concrete is one of the East Side Gallery’s most recognizable scenes. It turns a familiar East German car into a visual metaphor for movement through a barrier. Find it along the gallery route rather than treating it as a separate indoor attraction.

The Honecker–Brezhnev “Fraternal Kiss”

Dmitri Vrubel’s depiction of the Soviet and East German leaders kissing is another landmark work. Its political subject rewards a slower look: the mural belongs to a memorialized stretch of Wall, not merely to a colorful photo stop.

2. West Belfast’s political murals, Northern Ireland

West Belfast’s murals address political and social issues and honor figures connected with different histories and traditions. Visit West Belfast specifically highlights Frederick Douglass, Nelson Mandela and Bobby Sands. These works should be read in their local context rather than flattened into generic street decoration.

Start with the West Belfast mural page and map, which is the practical way to locate the works and understand the area’s themes. Routes, access and individual murals can change, so confirm the current map before setting out.

Frederick Douglass, Nelson Mandela and Bobby Sands

The figures named by Visit West Belfast represent distinct political and historical stories. Treat each portrait as part of a particular tradition and period; a walking route or local guide can provide context that a photograph alone cannot.

3. Mural Arts Philadelphia, Philadelphia, United States

Philadelphia’s Mural Arts program is a citywide collection rather than one enclosed wall. Visit Philadelphia describes walking and trolley tours that help visitors navigate the collection. Because works are distributed across neighborhoods, a current tour route is more useful than relying on a single pin or a static social-media list.

Love Letter rooftop murals

Love Letter is a sequence of 50 rooftop murals along Market Street, from 45th to 63rd Streets. The project changes how you see mural art: the works are encountered across an urban corridor and from particular viewpoints, not only at eye level. Verify the current route and visibility before planning a visit.

4. George Town street art, Penang, Malaysia

George Town’s murals sit within a historic city environment, where painted scenes share streets with heritage buildings and everyday activity. Tourism Malaysia identifies Ernest Zacharevic’s role in the city’s mural identity and notes later commissioned works by local artists.

Use the Tourism Malaysia guide and street-art map to build a walk. Check the current official map for exact streets and the condition of individual paintings, since outdoor works can be altered or weathered.

5. Wynwood Walls, Miami, United States

Wynwood Walls is a curated outdoor street-art museum and a center of creativity in Miami’s Arts District. The designation applies to the managed site, not automatically to every mural in the surrounding Wynwood neighborhood.

The Miami and Miami Beach visitor page is the appropriate starting point for current admission and display information. Confirm opening details before you travel, as exhibitions and access arrangements can change.

6. Fado Vadio, Mouraria, Lisbon, Portugal

At Escadinhas de São Cristóvão in Mouraria, the Fado Vadio mural pays tribute to fado, Lisbon’s iconic music. Its appeal comes from the connection between image, staircase and neighborhood: this is a local-culture stop embedded in the city rather than a detached gallery object.

Visit Lisboa provides the location. Check the mural’s condition and access shortly before visiting, particularly if your route depends on the narrow stairway.

Quick Recap

How to plan a mural-focused trip

  • Begin with an official map. West Belfast, Philadelphia and George Town all point visitors toward maps or organized routes.
  • Separate a site from a neighborhood. Wynwood Walls is a curated destination; George Town and West Belfast are broader urban mural experiences.
  • Allow for changing conditions. Sun, rain, restoration and redevelopment can affect outdoor paintings, especially the exposed East Side Gallery.
  • Read the setting. A mural’s historical or musical subject—and the place where it is painted—can matter as much as its scale or color.
  • Confirm logistics. Recheck opening details, tours, visibility, route changes and access with the destination authority on the day or shortly before your visit.
