DIY body oils can make skin feel softer and help slow water loss, but oil does not add water to skin the way a humectant-containing lotion or cream does. For the most reliable dry-skin routine, apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to damp skin soon after bathing, then use a plain body oil as an optional finishing layer.
What does body oil do?
Plant oils can work as emollients, filling gaps between surface skin cells, and as an occlusive layer that reduces transepidermal water loss. That is why oil can “seal in” moisture already present after bathing. It is not a substitute for a water-containing moisturizer.
A 2022 review examined 27 clinical studies involving 17 vegetable oils. The findings show that evidence varies substantially by oil, product, and application; the study count does not prove that every oil, or every homemade blend, hydrates skin equally.

Before you make a DIY body oil
- Choose a plain, unscented cosmetic oil. Fragrance and essential oils can irritate sensitive or eczema-prone skin.
- Check the label for nut-derived ingredients. Almond, argan and avocado oils may be unsuitable if you have a relevant allergy.
- Do not assume “natural” means risk-free. Stop using an oil if it causes burning, itching, rash or worsening dryness.
- Do not use these blends as treatment for eczema or another diagnosed condition.
- Olive oil is not included as a default recommendation: a review of olive, coconut and sunflower oils reported that olive oil may worsen xerosis and atopic dermatitis in some circumstances.
10 easy body-oil options
These are simple ingredient combinations or single-oil options, not clinically tested homemade formulas. No ratio, shelf life or performance advantage has been established for them. Use one oil at a time first so you can identify irritation or allergy.

Apply plain sunflower seed oil as a single-ingredient body oil. Sunflower oil appears in clinical literature on topical plant oils, but evidence for a homemade product still depends on the individual and the formulation.
3. Coconut oil
Use plain coconut oil if you tolerate its richer feel. It can feel heavier or become solid in a cool room, so warm a small amount between your palms rather than heating it aggressively.

8. Avocado oil
Use plain avocado oil for a richer option. Avoid it if you have an avocado allergy or a clinician has advised you to avoid it.
9. Jojoba and sunflower oil
Combine jojoba oil and sunflower seed oil only if you want to experiment with texture. Because no evidence establishes an ideal homemade ratio, start with a very small batch and change only one variable at a time.
10. Coconut and safflower oil
Pair coconut oil with safflower oil when you want to modify coconut oil’s rich feel. This is a personal-texture experiment, not a validated hydration formula.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to apply body oil after a shower
- Cleanse gently. Take a short, lukewarm shower and pat skin so it remains slightly damp.
- Moisturize first. Apply a fragrance-free cream or ointment while skin is damp. The American Academy of Dermatology favors creams or ointments over thin lotions for very dry skin.
- Add oil sparingly. Smooth a small amount of your chosen oil over the areas that still feel dry. An oil layer is optional; it should not replace the moisturizer step.
- Allow it to absorb. Wait before dressing, and use care on floors or tubs because oil can make surfaces slippery.
How to patch-test, especially with eczema
For eczema-prone or reactive skin, the American Academy of Dermatology advises testing a new skincare product on a quarter-sized area once daily for 7–10 days before applying it more widely. Test the finished mixture, not just each ingredient separately. Stop if you develop burning, rash, swelling or increased inflammation. Persistent or worsening symptoms need medical advice.
Choosing among the oils
| Consideration | How to decide |
|---|---|
| Allergy risk | Avoid known allergens; identify almond, argan, avocado, soy and other nut- or food-derived ingredients clearly. |
| Skin sensitivity | Choose fragrance-free oil and avoid essential oils as a default. |
| Finish | Jojoba, sunflower and safflower may feel lighter; coconut, avocado and some other oils may feel richer. This is a subjective preference. |
| Routine goal | For actual water delivery and dry-skin care, prioritize a fragrance-free cream or ointment on damp skin, then add oil only if you like the finish. |
| Evidence | Research exists for several plant oils, but it does not establish a winner or validate these homemade combinations. |
When to skip DIY oil and seek advice
Do not keep experimenting through a painful rash, cracking, oozing, marked redness or persistent itch. Those symptoms can reflect eczema, contact dermatitis or another condition requiring individualized care. A body oil may support comfort, but it is not a proven treatment for a diagnosed skin disease.
