3. Darling Duo embroidered pincushions
Darling Duo pairs bluework pincushions with hand-embroidered pine branches, snowmen and trees. The compact scale suits leftover fabric and makes the project practical as a handmade gift. Allow extra time for the hand stitching compared with a simple fused appliqué.
4. Winter Flurries wall hanging
Winter Flurries is a snowman wall hanging for a larger seasonal display. Use it when you want the snowman motif to read across a room; the larger format generally calls for more fabric, batting and quilting than an ornament or pillow block.

9. Warm Wishes felted-wool mitten
Warm Wishes makes a felted-wool mitten that can be given as a small gift or hung on a tree. Wool provides a soft, sturdy surface for a winter motif while avoiding the need to construct a full-sized mitten for wearing.

What supplies do I need to sew a snowman?
Most of these projects can be started with a modest fabric and notions box. The exact list depends on whether you are appliquéing, embroidering or stuffing.
- White and orange felt or fabric for the snowman and carrot nose.
- Cotton or printed scraps for hats, scarves, backgrounds and patchwork.
- Batting for table toppers, pillows, wall hangings and padded ornaments.
- Fusible adhesive for appliqué designs such as Frosty Friend and Snow Days.
- Black and matching thread, embroidery thread, basic needles and scissors.
- Buttons, ribbon, yarn, jute string and jingle bells for details and hangers.
- Polyester fiberfill for stuffed snowmen and ornaments. Fairfield World describes its 2-ounce Quick Craft Poly-Fil bag as suitable for small individual projects and recommends a five-pound box for group projects or giant plush snowmen.
For appliqué, a quilting cotton or printed fabric can form the background, while felt gives the snowman a clean edge. For stuffed work, use enough filling to create shape without stretching the seams.

Easy snowman appliqué on a quilted block
Wendi Gratz’s free tutorial starts with an 11-inch square of fabric and batting quilted together. White felt forms the head; printed fabric is used for the hat and ribbon, orange fabric for the carrot and solid black for the eyes. Fuse the pieces, stitch around them with a simple straight stitch and black thread, then trim the finished block to 10.5 inches. This approach is useful for a pillow front, wall panel or sampler block.

Small stuffed snowman ornament
Clover’s Sachiyo Ishii ornament finishes at 6 x 6.5 cm and includes a 0.5 cm seam allowance in the template. The materials are printed fabric scraps, two buttons, orange felt, 4-ply dark brown yarn, jute string, matching thread, sturdy card and toy filling.
- Sew the body, leaving an opening, then turn it right side out.
- Lightly stuff the body and close the opening with ladder stitch.
- Make the cone-shaped nose and embroider French-knot eyes and a backstitched mouth.
- Gather and attach the hat, then add the buttons and scarf.
- Attach the jute string so the finished snowman can hang on a tree or package.
How to choose the right pattern
For the fastest result
Start with Frosty Friend or Snow Days. Both are described as quick or easy appliqué, so you can fuse the shapes and stitch them without committing to a long embroidery or quilting project.
For scraps and small gifts
Choose Playful Snowman Ornament, the compact Clover-style stuffed ornament or Darling Duo pincushions. These projects use small amounts of fabric and are practical to make in multiples.
For a large seasonal display
Winter Flurries, Snow Days, Snowman Quartet and Seasons for Change Pillow provide more visual presence. Expect greater fabric, batting and quilting demands than for a small ornament.

A simple appliqué block or stuffed ornament offers a manageable first project. Fairfield World also describes its Felt Mini Snowman Softie as beginner-friendly and lists giant plush, sock, recycled-sweater and blanket snowman ideas, including no-sew versions suited to younger children and large groups. Use fabric scissors, needles, stuffing and small embellishments only with appropriate supervision.
Quick Recap
How do I make a fabric snowman?
- Pick the finished use first: ornament, gift, pillow, wall hanging, table topper or quilt.
- Gather the project’s fabric, felt, batting or filling and embellishments before cutting.
- Transfer the template accurately, retaining the stated seam allowance; the Clover ornament uses 0.5 cm.
- For appliqué, fuse each shape to the background and secure it with straight stitching or the pattern’s specified stitch.
- For a stuffed design, sew the body with an opening, turn it, fill it lightly, and ladder-stitch the opening closed.
- Add facial features, hat, scarf, buttons, bells or a hanging loop only after the main shape is secure.
- Press or shape the finished piece and check that all small embellishments are firmly attached.
Technique and time trade-offs
| Technique | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fusible appliqué | Fast, graphic results with minimal cutting | Requires fusible adhesive and edge stitching |
| Stuffed hand sewing | Creates a dimensional ornament or plush | Needs filling, turning and a neatly closed opening |
| Hand embroidery | Adds fine detail and portable stitching | Takes longer than a basic fused design |
| Patchwork and quilting | Produces durable, room-scale décor | Uses more fabric, batting and construction time |
