These ten home trends divide opinion because they put appearance and everyday life in tension. A clear chair can make a room feel lighter, while open shelves can make it harder to hide clutter; a single-color scheme can feel sophisticated or sterile; culturally rooted objects can be beautiful when their makers and stories are respected, but careless use can be disrespectful.
The list comes from Andreana Lefton’s Bob Vila feature, updated December 6, 2021. It is an editorial selection, not a ranked survey or a current measurement of what homeowners prefer. Use it as a decision guide: judge the visual effect, the room’s dimensions and storage, the cleaning and comfort demands, the quality and longevity of materials, and the provenance of decorative work.

How to decide whether a divisive trend belongs in your home
“Love” and “hate” are rarely useful design specifications. A trend can look excellent in photographs and still be wrong for a busy kitchen, a small living room, or a household that does not want extra dusting. Conversely, a choice that seems excessive in a showroom can work when its scale, color, lighting and surrounding objects are controlled.

1. Ghost chairs
Why people love them
Philippe Starck’s Louis Ghost chair, designed in 2002, reinterprets Louis XVI furniture in clear polycarbonate plastic. Its transparency preserves the outline of an armchair without adding the visual mass of an upholstered or opaque seat. That lightness can help a compact dining area or a room with strong architectural details feel less crowded.
Why people reject them
The same recognisable shape became ubiquitous, so some rooms now read the chair as a familiar design statement rather than a distinctive choice. Transparency also does not guarantee comfort, easy cleaning or suitability for the people who will use it. A chair that looks delicate may still dominate a room when several are grouped together.
How to test the idea
Place one clear polycarbonate armchair where it will actually be used before committing to a full set. Check the seat height, arm clearance, stability and cleaning routine, then view it in daylight and evening light. Let the room’s table, floor and wall color determine whether the chair disappears gracefully or looks visually noisy.
2. “Bad taste” turned good
Why people love it
This kitsch or eclectic approach combines objects that might seem random, outmoded or humorous. Done deliberately, the collision creates playfulness and gives a room a personal point of view instead of a showroom-matched appearance. A comic print, an inherited lamp and an unusual color can become a coherent story when the owner chooses them rather than following a single style label.
Why it becomes difficult
Eclectic is not the same as adding everything you like. Too many unrelated elements compete for attention and make useful surfaces hard to find. The room can look cluttered before any one object has had a chance to work, and changing paint colors or accessories becomes harder when every item demands equal emphasis.
How to compose it
Choose one dominant anchor—perhaps a wall color, large artwork or sofa—then allow a smaller number of contrasting pieces around it. Repeat one detail such as a color, material or shape so the surprises have a visual bridge. Leave negative space; restraint is what lets the deliberately “bad” element read as wit rather than disorder.

3. Minimalism
Why people love it
Minimalism favors simplicity, functional spare furnishings and a few chosen objects. Clear surfaces and an edited palette can make circulation obvious and create a calm backdrop for architecture, art or natural light. It may also reduce the amount of stuff that must be cleaned or rearranged.
Why it can feel sterile
Simplicity removes camouflage. If color, texture and lighting are not doing enough work, the same empty surfaces can feel cold, unfinished or impersonal. A room that looks serene in bright photography may feel stark at night or uncomfortable when there is nowhere to put ordinary household items.
How to keep it livable
Plan storage before removing furniture, and keep the pieces that support the room’s actual activities. Layer a limited palette with differences in texture—matte and reflective finishes, woven and smooth fabrics, or warm and cool surfaces—rather than filling the room with decoration. Test wall colors under the room’s real lighting; a pale neutral can shift substantially between daylight and electric light.

4. Reclaimed and upcycled furnishings
Why people love them
Reusing furniture can add creativity and value while giving an existing material another life. Marks, joinery and patina can supply character that a new mass-produced object does not have. An upcycled piece can also be altered for a particular room, such as converting an old cabinet into useful storage.
The quality test
As Andreana Lefton writes in the Bob Vila article, “The key is quality.” The original material should be durable and attractive, and restoration should improve both design and utility. A surface that photographs well but has weak joints, unsafe finishes or a difficult-to-use layout is not a successful reuse project.
What to inspect
Look for sound structure, stable hardware and a finish appropriate to the object’s use. Decide whether repairs preserve useful character or merely disguise damage. Measure the finished piece against doorways and clearances, and account for the maintenance its restored surface will require. The environmental or historical appeal does not cancel out poor construction; longevity is part of the design.

Why people love them
Mason jars moved from food preservation into decorative and serving roles. They can hold utensils, candles, small plants or drinks, and their familiar shape suggests an informal, handmade atmosphere. A few jars can add useful transparency and repetition to a shelf or table without requiring a large decorative object.

When jars appear as storage, lighting, planters and drinking vessels throughout the same room, the motif can feel clichéd. Their narrow openings can also make cleaning and arranging less convenient than a purpose-built container. The visual idea should support the household’s routines, not create another collection of objects to maintain.
How to use them without overdoing it
Give the jars a specific job and limit the number of places where the shape repeats. Grouping a few at one station is usually clearer than scattering them across every surface. For food or drinks, use clean, appropriate vessels and keep decorative use separate from tasks that require dependable storage or easy washing.
6. Edison lights
Why people love them
Edison-style bulbs borrow an old-fashioned industrial look and expose a warm amber filament. That glow can make a dining corner, reading nook or entry feel nostalgic and intimate, especially when the bulb is visible rather than hidden inside a conventional shade.
Why they divide a room
The throwback became so popular that repeated use can look formulaic. A cluster of exposed bulbs may also draw attention away from artwork or architectural features. The Bob Vila source discusses their appearance and placement, not product compatibility, light output or performance, so those details must be checked for the particular fixture and bulb you choose.
Placement that has a purpose
Use the bulb where its warm visual character is useful, rather than making every light source decorative. Confirm the socket, dimmer and fixture requirements before installation; aesthetic appeal does not establish technical compatibility.

7. Sectional sofas
Why people love them
Sectionals provide flexible seating and can follow the shape of a room. They are particularly useful for families, entertaining and larger spaces where a single sofa may leave awkward unused areas. A chaise or corner can define a conversation zone without adding several separate chairs.
Why they can overwhelm
The same continuous form is large and visually heavy. In a smaller room it can restrict walkways, block doors or leave no practical place for side tables. Upholstery, arm height and the direction of the corner matter as much as the advertised footprint; a sectional that technically fits may still make the room hard to use.
Measure before choosing
Record the room’s length, width, ceiling height, door swings, windows, radiators and walking routes. Mark the proposed outline on the floor with tape and check every entry path. Then decide how many people actually need seats, whether the silhouette suits the room and whether the upholstery can tolerate the household’s cleaning and use patterns.

8. Open shelving
Why people love it
Open kitchen shelves put favorite dishes and glassware on display and keep frequently used items within reach. They can make a wall feel less solid than a run of upper cabinets and give a room an opportunity for color, texture and personal objects.
Why it creates work
Not every plate, package or appliance is display-worthy. Open surfaces collect dust, and kitchen shelves are exposed to grease and cooking residue. The arrangement must remain orderly, so the storage system depends on the household’s willingness to clean and edit it rather than simply shut a door.
Decide from your habits
Inventory what you would actually place on the shelves and how often each item is used. Reserve the most visible positions for durable, attractive pieces and keep messy or rarely used supplies elsewhere. Check wall construction, shelf depth and bracket capacity before installation, and leave enough space to remove dishes without scraping adjacent objects.

9. Monochrome rooms
Why people love them
A one-hue palette can feel calm, sophisticated and intentional. Repeating a related color across walls, furnishings and accessories reduces visual noise and lets shape, light and proportion become more noticeable. It can also make a small scheme easier to plan because every new object must relate to one color family.

Why they look flat
If every surface has the same value and finish, the room loses depth. A monochrome scheme can become dull rather than restful, especially when the chosen color receives little natural light or when there is no variation in material.
Build depth without breaking the palette
Vary the tones from light to dark and mix textures so the eye can distinguish walls, upholstery, flooring and accessories. Use sheen carefully: a matte wall beside a subtly reflective surface can create movement without introducing a second hue. Natural elements such as plants add contrast and life while remaining compatible with the dominant color.
10. “Ethnic” décor and cultural context
Why the label needs care
The quotation marks matter. The broad term “Ethnic” can flatten distinct cultures into a decorative category. The source contrasts mass-produced objects detached from their origins with artwork made by local artisans, and it raises concerns about cultural appropriation. A pattern or object is not context-free simply because it is sold as a style.
Questions to ask about an object
Find out who made it, where it was made and what its symbols or techniques mean. Consider whether the maker or community is credited and compensated, rather than treating a living culture as a visual theme. Learning the story behind a work can change how it is displayed and how you explain it to visitors.

Support local makers when possible and describe the work accurately instead of using a generic label. Display culturally rooted art because you value the maker and the object, not because it supplies an exotic accent for an otherwise unrelated room. If the origin cannot be established, that uncertainty is a reason to pause rather than assume that any attractive reproduction is harmless.
Putting the ten choices together
These examples show why a trend cannot be judged by appearance alone. Ghost chairs and Edison lights depend on whether visual lightness or industrial warmth improves the specific room. Sectionals and open shelves succeed only when dimensions, storage and maintenance match daily habits. Minimalism and monochrome schemes require deliberate control of color, texture and lighting, while eclectic décor requires enough editing to prevent clutter. Reclaimed pieces demand sound materials and useful restoration, and culturally rooted décor demands provenance and respect.
Before buying or painting around any trend, make a small, reversible test: one chair instead of a whole set, one shelf instead of an entire wall, one bulb or lamp instead of a full lighting scheme, or a painted sample viewed at several times of day. Live with that test through ordinary routines. The best choice is the one whose beauty survives cleaning, movement, storage, comfort and the meaning of the objects you bring into the room.
