The most useful IKEA storage is not simply a place to put things. The right combination can divide a room, keep frequently used items within reach, adapt to an awkward wall, or let you move a box from storage to where the work happens. IKEA US lists families including PAX, AURDAL, BESTÅ, EKET, KALLAX, ELVARLI, IVAR, BROR, JONAXEL and TROFAST in its storage-solution catalog. The ten ideas below are ways to evaluate those systems by how a room functions, not a universal ranking. Check the exact current combination, dimensions, finish, stock and installation requirements before ordering.
Ten ways to choose storage by what it does
“More than hide clutter” can mean different things: a shelf may remain visible for quick access, a cabinet may create a visual boundary, or a modular frame may change as your needs change. This table shows the practical role each solution can play. 1. TROFAST as a room divider
The clearest example of storage doing architectural work is IKEA’s TROFAST storage combination with boxes, room divider. IKEA states that the configuration is accessible from both sides, so it can separate two activities without creating a solid wall. That makes it useful between a play area and living area, between a desk and a sleeping zone, or anywhere you need a boundary while retaining light and access.
Plan both faces before buying
- Decide what each side needs to hold; a child-facing side may use bins while the other side uses shelves.
- Measure circulation space on both sides, including door swings and the distance needed to pull containers out.
- Confirm that the exact product page includes the boxes, shelves and hardware you expect. IKEA notes that rails allow the placement of boxes and shelves to be changed, but the available positions depend on the selected frame.
Because it stands in the room rather than against a wall, treat anchoring and stability as part of the design, not an afterthought.

2. TROFAST boxes and trays that travel
IKEA describes the TROFAST system as frames, boxes, trays and shelves. Its containers are designed to pull out, be carried and put back, which changes the routine from “find an item in a cabinet” to “take the whole category to the activity.” Use one tray for current art materials, a box for building pieces or a container for sports accessories that moves to the room where it is needed.
Match the container to the behavior
- List the activities that create recurring clutter.
- Assign one category to each box or tray; avoid mixing items that are returned at different times.
- Check the frame’s rail positions and the exact container dimensions before combining products.
- Label the front or use a visible sample item so children and adults can return the container without opening every box.
For one listed TROFAST combination with boxes, IKEA says the polypropylene storage box uses a minimum of 50% recycled material. That figure applies to the specific listing, not automatically to every TROFAST component; see the product details.
3. KALLAX for two-sided access
IKEA’s storage catalog describes KALLAX configurations that provide room-dividing, two-sided storage. In a studio, it can mark the edge of a sleeping area while keeping books, baskets or daily-use objects reachable from either side. In a home office, the same idea can separate a work surface from the rest of the room without blocking every sightline.
Make the divider work safely
- Choose the exact orientation and insert combination before measuring; a cube unit’s usable openings change when doors, drawers or baskets are added.
- Keep heavy contents low and distribute weight instead of loading one side exclusively.
- Follow the supplied anchoring instructions and confirm the wall and floor conditions. IKEA warns that large, tall or heavy furniture can tip if it is not properly fastened.
The benefit is not that every KALLAX setup is automatically a divider; it is that the right two-sided configuration can perform that role. Verify the current listing before treating it as a room boundary.

4. BESTÅ as a mixed open-and-closed wall
IKEA presents BESTÅ as customizable, allowing a composition to combine display space with concealed storage. That lets a living room keep frequently used items visible while placing cables, paperwork or less attractive equipment behind doors. The result is a wall that supports several routines rather than a single large cabinet.
Specify the combination, not just the family name
- Measure the wall, skirting boards and nearby outlets.
- Decide which items need immediate reach and which can be behind doors.
- Record every frame, door, shelf, leg, rail or suspension component in the chosen combination.
- Check whether the configuration is intended for floor placement, wall mounting or both, and use the supplied fastening method.

The IVAR buying guide says system parts can be combined to make use of available space. That makes IVAR a sensible starting point when a room may change from pantry to hobby storage, or when a long wall has a doorway, radiator or other interruption.
Design around the real obstruction
- Draw the wall with its doors, windows, outlets and heating equipment before choosing modules.
- Reserve lower levels for items that are handled often and higher levels for seasonal categories.
- Leave a deliberate gap where the room requires one rather than forcing a continuous run.
- Recheck the exact part list after every change; combining a system does not mean every component is interchangeable.

6. PAX as a clothing workflow
PAX is one of the configurable wardrobe families in IKEA’s US storage catalog. Its value is organizational: a properly planned wardrobe can put the steps of dressing—hanging, folding, storing accessories and setting aside laundry—within one defined zone. That can reduce the habit of using a chair or floor as temporary storage.
Plan from the morning routine
- Measure the full installation zone, including ceiling height, baseboards and the clearance needed to assemble or open the selected units.
- Separate long-hanging garments, folded clothing, shoes and accessories by how often they are used.
- Choose the current PAX frame and interior combination that matches those categories; do not assume an accessory shown in an image is included.
- Confirm delivery access and anchoring requirements before ordering tall sections.

7. AURDAL for a compact closet plan

8. EKET for awkward walls and small rooms
EKET appears in IKEA’s storage-system catalog as a modular family. Its small-unit approach can help use an alcove, a narrow wall or a low section beneath a window without committing the entire room to one large piece.
Keep the composition intentional
- Measure the usable rectangle, including the space needed to open doors or drawers.
- Sketch modules at their actual dimensions; do not rely on a product photograph for scale.

- For wall-mounted elements, identify the wall material and follow the supplied hardware guidance.

10. BROR or JONAXEL as a utility work zone
BROR and JONAXEL are both listed in IKEA’s US storage catalog and can be considered when storage must support a task rather than simply hold possessions. A laundry area, garage corner or hobby space benefits from an arrangement where supplies are visible, grouped by job and reachable at the point of use.
Build around the task
- Write down the work performed in the space and the tools or consumables used for each task.
- Measure the largest item, the required working clearance and the route through which items enter the room.
