The best 3D-printing accessories are the ones that solve recurring problems: removing supports, measuring parts, managing moisture, clearing clogs and replacing worn printer-specific components. For most FDM/FFF printer owners, start with flush cutters, digital calipers, a deburring tool, basic hand tools and airtight filament storage. Add a filament dryer, spare nozzles or a replacement build plate when your materials, printer or failures justify them.
This list is primarily for FDM/FFF filament printers. Resin printers require a different safety and post-processing setup; see the note near the end.
Quick guide: what to buy first
| Accessory | Best for | Priority | Key warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital calipers | Functional parts and dimensional checks | Essential for serious projects | Budget calipers are not laboratory instruments |
| 3D-printer tool kit | Beginner convenience | Useful if you lack basic tools | Many printers already include several items |
| Flush cutters | Supports and filament | Essential | Do not force them through hard material |
| Deburring tool | Edges, holes and brim removal | Highly useful | Excess pressure can gouge plastic |

1. Digital calipers
Best for: designing replacement parts, checking printed dimensions and making functional assemblies fit.
A 6-inch/150-mm digital caliper is one of the highest-value upgrades for anyone who prints brackets, enclosures, replacement parts or anything that must mate with another object. Use it to measure holes, slots, wall thicknesses and existing parts before modelling them. It can also provide a rough check of filament diameter when extrusion problems need diagnosing.
Look for stainless-steel jaws, a clear display, a zero function, a lock screw or thumbwheel, a replaceable battery and a manufacturer with a usable return policy. Zero the caliper before measuring, keep the jaws clean and take several readings. Misalignment, excessive force, dirt and inconsistent budget mechanisms can all produce misleading results.
Inexpensive Amazon calipers may be perfectly adequate for hobby CAD and typical FDM checks, but do not treat them as calibrated metrology equipment. Engineering work that depends on tight tolerances calls for a better instrument and a more rigorous measurement method.

2. An organized 3D-printer tool kit
Best for: beginners who want several basic tools in one case.
A useful kit typically combines flush cutters, tweezers, needle-nose pliers, a scraper, hex keys or screwdriver bits, nozzle-cleaning needles, small files, a deburring tool and storage. A commonly covered Rustark-style bundle, for example, has been described as a 42-piece set containing tools for cutting, cleaning, print removal, deburring, measurement and surface protection; verify the current contents because bundles and sellers change. Existing coverage of 3D-printer kits illustrates both the convenience and the quality compromises.
Buy a kit for convenience, not because a high piece count proves quality. The calipers, cutters or files may be the weakest components, and a new printer may already include cutters, a scraper and Allen keys. If you already own good hand tools, buying individual replacements is often better value.
3. Flush cutters
Best for: cutting filament and removing supports, brims and small protrusions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Sharp, narrow-jaw flush cutters make post-processing faster and leave less material to sand. They are also useful for trimming filament cleanly before loading it. Choose a comfortable grip and jaws that close evenly; a compact electronics-style cutter is generally more useful than a bulky general-purpose pair for printed parts.
Do not use flush cutters on hardened wire, metal or excessive amounts of rigid plastic. That can chip the cutting edges or damage the pivot. Wear eye protection when snipping supports: small fragments can fly.

4. A deburring tool
Best for: cleaning holes, sharp edges, elephant’s-foot edges and remnants left by brims, rafts or supports.
A swivel-blade deburring tool is more versatile than many novelty 3D-printer gadgets. It can quickly clean the inside of a hole, remove a sharp outer edge or tidy a first-layer bulge. Prefer a handle with replaceable blades and buy spare blades if the tool will see frequent use.

Use light pressure and make controlled passes. Soft PLA and PETG can be gouged easily, especially around thin walls. Pair the tool with fine files, tweezers and a cutting mat for more delicate cleanup.
5. A filament dryer
Best for: PETG, TPU, nylon/polyamide, PVA/BVOH, polypropylene, some filled filaments and printing in humid conditions.
A dryer is not mandatory for every occasional PLA user. If you print PLA infrequently and keep opened spools sealed with fresh desiccant, passive storage may be enough. A heated dryer becomes much more valuable when filament is repeatedly exposed to humid air or when you use materials that absorb moisture readily.
Moisture can produce stringing, popping, bubbling, smoke, blobs, rough surfaces, inconsistent extrusion and weak layer adhesion. Prusa’s drying guidance gives material-specific examples and emphasizes that different filaments require different conditions. Follow the filament manufacturer’s temperature and time recommendations rather than applying one universal setting.
Look for adjustable temperature, a timer, suitable spool capacity and a feed-through path if you want to print while drying. A dryer may not recover filament that has been overheated, contaminated or physically damaged, and some spools can deform at excessive temperatures. A dryer’s maximum temperature may also be inadequate for certain engineering materials.
Models such as the Creality Space Pi are examples of the category, not universal recommendations. Compare temperature range, capacity and feed-through design with your materials and printer.
6. Airtight filament storage with desiccant
Best for: preventing opened spools from absorbing moisture.
Use resealable vacuum bags, an airtight box or a purpose-built drybox with fresh silica gel or another appropriate desiccant. A humidity indicator is useful because it tells you when the storage environment needs attention. Passive storage slows moisture absorption; it does not necessarily remove moisture that is already in the filament.

- Cost-Effective Filament Bundle: Get 2 "1kg" spools of PLA filament for the price of 1 with classic black and white color
- Smooth and Stable Printing: Patented design and manufacturing process ensures smooth, clog-free printing
- Durable and Strong: Improved toughness and strength for printing functional parts
- Compatible with Most Printers: Works with 99% of FDM and FFF 3D printers with heated beds
- Renewable Material: Made from starch derived from renewable plant resources for environmental friendliness
That distinction matters. Prusa’s drybox information describes low-humidity storage and direct feeding, while distinguishing it from active pre-drying. For frequent printing, a drybox with a suitable spool path can be convenient. For occasional printing, sealed bags with reusable desiccant are usually simpler and cheaper.
7. Printer-specific spare nozzles
Best for: recovering from clogs, replacing worn nozzles and changing the balance between detail and throughput.
A 0.4-mm nozzle remains the normal general-purpose choice for many FDM printers, but other diameters have legitimate uses:
- 0.2 mm: finer small details, with slower printing and greater clog sensitivity.
- 0.4 mm: the usual balance of detail, reliability and speed.
- 0.6 mm: potentially higher extrusion throughput and better tolerance for some filled materials, with less fine detail.
- 0.8 mm: thick walls, large functional parts and rapid prototypes, but not fine-detail work.
A larger nozzle does not automatically make every print faster. Actual print time depends on layer height, extrusion width, acceleration, hotend capacity, slicer settings and model geometry. You may need to update the slicer profile after changing diameter.
For carbon-fiber-, glass-fiber-, wood- or glow-in-the-dark-filled filament, a hardened-steel or other wear-resistant nozzle may last longer than ordinary brass. It can also require different temperatures and settings. Most importantly, match the nozzle to the exact printer and hotend: thread, mounting system, diameter, length, material and maximum temperature all matter. A generic “0.4-mm nozzle” is not automatically compatible with every machine.
OEM or printer-approved nozzles reduce fit risk. Aftermarket hardened nozzles may offer more material choices, but only buy them after confirming compatibility with your specific model and hotend generation.
8. Nozzle-cleaning tools
Best for: small debris, partial clogs and routine maintenance.
A cleaning kit may include needles in several sizes, a brass brush and tools for purging or handling the nozzle. It is a useful backup, but a needle is not a universal cure. Clogs can result from wet or contaminated filament, low temperature, heat creep, abrasive wear or incorrect nozzle installation.
Use the printer manufacturer’s cold-pull, purge or nozzle-replacement instructions. Procedures vary by machine. For example, Prusa’s guidance for certain affected models calls for heating the nozzle to 250°C for three to five minutes before brushing, while warning users to avoid hotend cables and allow the assembly to cool. That is model-specific guidance, not a universal instruction. Read the relevant manufacturer procedure before working near a hotend.
9. A spare build plate
Best for: reducing downtime and replacing a scratched, warped or worn surface.

A second build plate lets you remove a finished print while another plate is ready to install. It can also give you a different surface finish, such as smooth, textured or satin PEI. But a replacement plate is only a good purchase when it fits your printer exactly.
Check the bed dimensions, spring-steel thickness, magnet arrangement, tab or handle position, coating, maximum temperature and whether the firmware or calibration process expects a particular plate type. Verify whether the printer uses a magnetic spring-steel sheet, glass, a fixed surface or a proprietary mounting system.
Do not assume PEI universally improves adhesion. Results also depend on cleanliness, first-layer height, bed temperature, filament type, surface preparation and plate wear. A new plate cannot compensate for poor first-layer calibration. A sharp metal scraper can also damage some coated or flexible plates, so start with the printer’s recommended removal method.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Files, sandpaper and a cutting mat
Best for: smoothing support scars, trimming edges and improving fit after printing.
A small set of needle files, several sandpaper grits and a cutting mat handles the jobs a cutter cannot. Files are useful for holes and corners; sandpaper works better on broader surfaces. A hobby knife can help with fine trimming, but use it carefully and keep the work secured.
Sanding creates dust. Use eye protection and sensible ventilation; wet sanding can reduce airborne dust for suitable plastics. Resin prints require additional care: do not treat resin-contaminated dust or uncured residue like ordinary PLA waste.
What to buy first
Minimal FDM starter setup
- Flush cutters.
- A deburring tool.
- Digital calipers.
- The printer’s supplied scraper, tweezers and hex keys, or replacements if those tools are poor.
- Airtight filament storage with desiccant.
This covers the most common beginner needs without buying a large kit or dryer prematurely.
Better setup for frequent printing
Add an active filament dryer, spare printer-compatible nozzles, a spare build plate and better hex drivers or an organized tool case. Frequent PETG, TPU, nylon, PVA/BVOH or filled-filament users should move drying and wear-resistant nozzle choices higher on the list.
Buy only after a specific problem appears
Delay a dryer if you print occasional PLA without moisture symptoms. Delay hardened nozzles if you never use abrasive filament. Delay a spare build plate if your current surface is healthy and downtime is unimportant. Delay a large kit if you already own quality cutters, calipers, files and drivers.
Compatibility checklist before ordering
For nozzles: confirm the exact printer model and generation, hotend or quick-change system, thread or mounting method, nozzle length, diameter, material and temperature requirements.

For build plates: confirm exact dimensions, magnetic or other mounting style, spring-steel thickness, surface type, tabs or handles and temperature rating.
For filament equipment: confirm that the dryer accepts your spool dimensions, reaches the required temperature and provides a usable feed path. Confirm whether your printer uses 1.75-mm or 2.85-mm filament.
For enclosed or automated printers: check clearance, spool-path geometry and whether the accessory works with the printer’s feeder or multi-material system.
Safety essentials
Keep safety glasses nearby when cutting supports, scraping plates or brushing hotend residue. Let the nozzle and bed cool before maintenance, and keep hands away from heated components and exposed wiring. Do not casually scrape a hot bed or brush a hotend while touching its cables.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Filament printers can emit volatile organic compounds and ultrafine particles. Chemical Insights recommends reducing close exposure and using ventilation or suitable filtration and engineering controls. A normal dust mask is not a complete solution for VOCs or ultrafine particles, and an enclosure or carbon filter should not be treated as proof that emissions have been eliminated. The related UL safe-use guidance also addresses cooling time, cleanup, hand washing and HEPA filtration for deposited particles.
Resin printing is a separate category. Uncured resin requires chemical-resistant gloves, suitable eye protection, spill control, resin-safe containers, appropriate cleaning and ventilation. UL guidance recommends avoiding casual contact with uncured resin and cleaning contaminated tools and surfaces appropriately. An FDM accessory kit is not a complete resin safety or post-processing setup.
Troubleshooting: which accessory actually helps?
Wet filament
Stringing, popping, bubbling, smoke, blobs, rough surfaces and weak layer adhesion can indicate moisture. Confirm the material’s recommended drying conditions, dry it in a suitable controlled device, store it with desiccant and retest with a small print. If the issue remains, check the nozzle, temperature, retraction and extrusion calibration. Moisture is one possibility, not a diagnosis by itself.
Clogged nozzle
Check for wet or contaminated filament, low printing temperature, debris, abrasive wear, heat creep and incorrect installation. Follow the printer maker’s cold-pull, purge or replacement procedure rather than assuming a cleaning needle will solve every clog.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Clean the plate using the manufacturer’s recommended method.
- Confirm that the installed plate type is correct.
- Check first-layer height and calibration.
- Verify bed temperature and filament-specific settings.
- Consider warping, ambient temperature, plate wear and damage.
A new build plate may help when the old one is worn, but it is not a substitute for correct first-layer settings.
Inaccurate measurements
Zero the calipers, clean the jaws, align them squarely with the part and measure several times using consistent pressure. If repeatability is poor, the battery or caliper mechanism may be at fault. Use a better-calibrated tool when the tolerance is critical.
Bottom line
For most FDM owners, buy the small tools first: flush cutters, a deburring tool, calipers and airtight filament storage. Choose a complete kit only when it genuinely replaces several purchases. Add a dryer for moisture-sensitive materials or humid workflows, and buy nozzles and build plates only after checking the exact printer model. That approach delivers more value than treating every large Amazon bundle as essential.
