The safest pet-friendly home is built around two habits: remove access to hazards and create clear boundaries until a product, room or window is safe. Start with the ten checks below, then repeat the short room-by-room sweep regularly. This approach follows the ASPCA’s guidance on household products, moving and common home hazards.

The need is measurable. Household products represented 6.4% of exposures in the ASPCA’s 2025 toxin summary, and the organization received calls involving more than 376,000 items pets were exposed to during 2025. Those figures are reported by ASPCA in 2026; they are not a prediction of an individual pet’s risk, but they show why ordinary storage and access decisions matter.

1. Tuck away or cover every electrical cord

Loose cords invite chewing, pulling and entanglement. ASPCA pet-proofing guidance recommends tucking electrical cords out of reach. Route cords behind heavy furniture where practical, secure slack so it cannot dangle, and unplug chargers when they are not in use. Pay special attention to cords beside a new pet’s bed, crate or favorite hiding place.

Make the boundary dependable

Do not rely on a pet ignoring a cord after one correction. Use a physical route or cover that keeps the cable inaccessible, and check that the barrier has not shifted during play or cleaning. Replace damaged cords rather than taping over chew marks. If you cannot move a cord, prevent access to the entire corner with a stable gate or closed door.

2. Put chemicals, laundry supplies and batteries behind a secured cabinet door

Store cleaning products, laundry supplies, batteries, pool chemicals, diffuser liquids and potpourri in cabinets pets cannot access. That is the ASPCA’s specific recommendation for these household hazards. A high shelf is not enough if a cat can climb to it or a dog can knock a container down.

Organize the cabinet for containment

Keep products in their original, labeled containers with lids closed. A cabinet safety latch or childproof cabinet lock can add a second barrier; choose one that fits the door and still allows an adult to open it quickly. Separate leaking or damaged containers from usable supplies and clean the shelf promptly. Never decant a chemical into a food or drink container, where its contents could be mistaken for something edible.

Include seldom-used supplies

Check the items brought out only seasonally, such as pool chemicals, drain products and spare batteries. Pets can reach a newly opened package just as easily as a daily cleaner. Return every container to the secured cabinet immediately after use.

3. Block narrow gaps where a pet could become trapped

ASPCA moving and pet-proofing advice includes blocking spaces where an animal might get stuck. Inspect behind appliances, under cabinets, between a radiator and wall, and beside reclining furniture. A small puppy, kitten or slim cat may enter an opening that looks harmless to an adult.

Inspect from the pet’s viewpoint

Get down to floor level and look for openings that disappear from standing height. Close them with a sturdy barrier that cannot collapse or expose sharp edges. Keep cords, cleaning tools and stored items from creating a climbable path into the gap. Recheck after moving furniture, installing an appliance or rearranging a room.

Test before giving access

After blocking an opening, watch how the barrier behaves when nudged. If it rocks, leaves a paw-sized opening or can be pushed aside, it is not a reliable boundary. Keep the door closed until you can correct the setup.

4. Check window screens and secure windows

Loose screens and open windows create an escape and fall hazard. ASPCA’s pet-proofing guidance specifically calls for checking window screens and securing windows. Examine every accessible window, including those above furniture that gives a pet a launch point.

Use a simple inspection routine

  1. Press lightly on each screen frame to find looseness or gaps.
  2. Confirm that latches engage fully and that the window cannot slide farther open than intended.
  3. Move beds, shelves and chairs away from a window if they let a pet lean against a screen.
  4. Close and secure windows before leaving the room, even for a short task.

Do not treat a screen as a weight-bearing barrier. Repair or replace a damaged screen before allowing access, and keep windows closed while contractors or movers are carrying doors and furniture through the home.

5. Remove poisonous plants and find forgotten pest-control traps

Walk through the home and remove plants known to be poisonous to pets. ASPCA also advises checking for pest-control poison traps that may have been left behind by a previous resident, landlord or service visit. Look behind appliances, in utility rooms, garages and low cabinets.

Make an inventory before bringing plants inside

Identify each plant by its common and scientific name, then verify its status with a reliable veterinary or poison-control reference. If you cannot identify a plant, keep it out of the pet’s area until you have confirmed that it is appropriate. Fallen leaves, bulbs and soil additives deserve the same caution as the main plant.

Account for hidden traps

Ask a landlord, property manager or pest professional where treatments or bait stations were placed. Do not move an unknown trap to a more convenient location; secure the area and obtain instructions for safe removal. Keep pets away from garages, sheds and crawl spaces until you know what is present.

6. Keep pets out of wet or treated areas until the label allows re-entry

Most cleaning products can be used around dogs and cats when the label is followed, but safety depends on the product, the amount of exposure and the animal species. Birds are particularly sensitive to fumes, so a product suitable for a dog’s living area is not automatically suitable for a bird’s room. Read the label every time rather than relying on a general rule.

Build a dry-and-air-out boundary

Close the door or use a physical barrier while cleaning. Keep pets away for the full time specified on the product directions and by ASPCA guidance. Do not restore bowls, bedding or toys until the surface is ready for contact. Ventilate as the label directs, and keep birds in a separate, well-ventilated area whenever fumes may be present.

Follow product-specific examples

ASPCA says diluted bleach may be used on pet toys and kennels only when it is thoroughly rinsed and the bleach odor has dissipated before pets return. Enzyme-based cleaners should dry before re-entry. These examples do not make every formulation interchangeable: the bottle’s directions control dilution, contact time, rinsing and ventilation.

7. Put cleaning bottles, buckets and used tools away immediately

Access can continue after the wiping is finished. ASPCA advises secure storage, prompt spill cleanup and following directions for household chemicals. A mop bucket, soaked cloth, open spray bottle or discarded cleaning wipe can leave residue where a pet drinks, licks or lies down.

Close the task, not just the bottle

  1. Cap or close every container before carrying it out of the room.
  2. Empty and rinse buckets as the product label directs; do not leave solution unattended.
  3. Place used cloths, sponges and wipes in a closed receptacle or wash them promptly.
  4. Wipe up splashes immediately and keep pets out until the area meets the label’s drying or rinsing requirement.
  5. Return supplies to the secured cabinet rather than leaving them on a counter for the next use.

Keep the original label available if you need to identify an ingredient or give accurate information to a veterinarian.

8. Treat insecticide applications as a temporary no-pet zone

Insecticides require a separate plan. ASPCA advises reading the label, ventilating indoor treatment areas, and keeping pets away until the work is complete, the chemicals are dry and the products are put away. Keep food bowls, water bowls and toys away from the treatment area during the application.

Before treatment

Read the complete directions for the specific product and room. Remove bowls, toys, bedding and other items that could contact the treatment. Close doors or establish another barrier so a curious pet cannot enter while you prepare the area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During treatment

Follow the label’s application rate, protective-equipment instructions and ventilation requirements. Do not let a pet “wait nearby”; fumes and wet residues can move beyond the spot being treated. Store the product securely as soon as the application is finished.

Before re-entry

Wait until the label’s conditions are met and the treated surfaces are dry. Air the room as directed, replace clean bowls and toys only after the area is ready, and inspect for spills or containers left behind. If the label gives a longer interval than your usual routine, use the longer interval.

9. Give a pet moving into a new home one quiet home-base room

When a pet is settling into a new home, ASPCA suggests starting with one home-base room and gradually introducing other rooms. This limits the number of hazards you must supervise while the animal learns unfamiliar sounds, doors and boundaries.

Set up the room first

Before arrival, secure cords, chemicals, plants, windows and gaps in that room. Add the pet’s familiar bedding, food and water, then close the door or use a gate. Keep traffic calm and make sure everyone in the household knows which boundary is in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expand access deliberately

Open one additional area at a time after you have checked it. Walk the route at the pet’s level, remove hazards and supervise the first visits. If the animal becomes overwhelmed or repeatedly seeks an unsafe hiding place, return to the home-base room and adjust the setup before trying again. Gradual access is a management tool, not a test the pet must pass.

10. Use a five-minute hazard check for every room

A routine catches changes that a one-time pet-proofing project misses. This checklist is an editorial synthesis of ASPCA’s storage and pet-proofing guidance, not a substitute for a product label or veterinary advice.

Run the same sequence

  1. Look low: scan floors for cords, batteries, plant parts, spills and small objects.
  2. Look behind: check gaps beside appliances and furniture where a pet could enter or become wedged.
  3. Look up: verify window screens, latches and climbable furniture near windows.
  4. Check cabinets: confirm that chemicals, laundry supplies, pool products and diffuser liquids are closed and inaccessible.
  5. Check recent work: identify any wet, treated or insecticide-applied surface and confirm the label’s re-entry conditions.
  6. Reset the room: put away tools, close doors and return barriers to their intended position.

Do the sweep after cleaning, unpacking, maintenance visits and furniture moves. A quick repeat is easier than reconstructing what changed after an accident.

What to do if exposure may have occurred

If a pet may have contacted, swallowed or inhaled a household product, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control promptly. Have the product container or label available, along with the pet’s species, approximate size, the time of exposure and what you observed. Do not improvise a treatment based on a household recipe; the correct response depends on the substance, dose, route of exposure and species.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the animal away from the source while you make the call, prevent further access and preserve the label for the professional who advises you. For birds, mention any possible fume exposure because ASPCA identifies birds as especially sensitive to fumes.

Why these small changes matter

ASPCA’s 2025 toxin summary, published in 2026, counted household products as 6.4% of reported exposures and described calls concerning over 376,000 items pets were exposed to during 2025. The figures cover reports to ASPCA, not every exposure in every household. They do, however, support a practical priority: secure the source, control access and follow the label before a pet returns to the area.
