You do not need a renovation or a major cleanout to make home feel easier to live in. Ten small actions—such as making the bed, clearing one visible surface, preparing for tomorrow, or caring for a plant—can create useful cues and reduce friction in ordinary routines. They are suggestions, not guaranteed treatments for stress, poor sleep, or low mood.

The list below follows Kat Hodgins’s Bob Vila article, updated January 23, 2023. Its explanations are practical and qualitative rather than statistical. Where the article attributes a sleep claim to the Sleep Foundation, that attribution is identified as such rather than presented as independently verified here.

The source does not provide measured completion times, success rates, or a required order. Treat the table as a way to select an action that matches your space and capacity, not as a ranking.

Ten small tasks and how to use them

1. Make the bed every day

Making the bed is a contained job with a clear finish. Bob Vila presents that completion as a cue that the day has begun and as a small accomplishment you can see immediately. A tidier-looking bed can also leave the bedroom feeling less visually busy when you return at night.

Perfect for walls, trim, cabinets, doors, furniture, and detailed cutting-in work on any project.
  • ZERO BRISTLE LOSS — GUARANTEED BY PRECISION ADHESIVE BONDING — Every bristle is locked in place with precision-set adhesive that keeps them in the brush — not in your paint job. The coated steel ferrule provides structural support while the adhesive bond ensures clean performance on every stroke. Premium SRT synthetic filaments load more paint and release it evenly for a smooth streak-free finish on walls, ceilings, and trim. Works with latex, oil-based paint, primer, sealer, and wood stain.
  • INCLUDES THE ANGLE STUBBY MOST SETS LEAVE OUT — Professional painters know the 2 Inch Angle Stubby is the go-to brush for tight cabinet interiors, window sashes, inside corners, and detailed trim where standard angle brushes are too long. Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
  • FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Solid wood handles provide all-day comfort and control for both professional contractors and weekend DIY homeowners tackling interior or exterior painting projects.
  • TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

Keep the action deliberately simple: straighten the sheet, pull up the duvet or blanket, and place pillows where you want them. If a full hotel-style arrangement makes you skip the task, use a version you can repeat. The value described in the article comes from the consistent cue and finished state, not from a particular number of pillows or a decorative style.

2. Separate work and home spaces

If you work at home, create an intentional work zone even when you cannot spare a separate room. A desk, one end of a dining table, or a small surface against a wall can serve as the work location. At the end of the work period, clear the surface or put the computer away so the same room can signal rest again.

Bob Vila says a dedicated area may support concentration and make it easier to mentally leave work behind. That is a practical boundary, not a promise that a particular desk arrangement will improve productivity for everyone. In a shared room, use reversible markers such as a lamp you switch on only for work, a tray for work materials, or a chair that returns to its ordinary position afterward.

3. Remove visual clutter in small zones

Do not begin with an entire house. Choose one visible, bounded area: the laundry on the floor, the mail on a counter, or a recycling stack near the door. Put laundry in a hamper, sort mail into keep, act, and recycle groups, or move recycling to its collection point. Then stop when that zone is usable.

The article’s reasoning is that visible mess can contribute to feeling overwhelmed, while small zones keep decluttering manageable. This approach also gives you a defined stopping point. If an item requires a complicated decision, place it in a temporary review pile rather than allowing one object to halt the whole task; set a later time to decide, instead of pretending the item is already resolved.

4. Keep electronics out of the bedroom

Make the bedroom a place where phones, tablets, televisions, and work alerts do not automatically follow you. Charge a device outside the room, silence nonessential notifications before bed, or use a conventional alarm if the phone is the reason it stays beside the pillow. Start with the device that most often pulls you back into messages or scrolling.

Bob Vila attributes the concern about light and sounds stimulating the mind and disrupting melatonin production to the Sleep Foundation. The Foundation material was not independently reviewed for this article, so treat that explanation as an attributed rationale rather than a universal medical conclusion. If you have persistent insomnia, unusual sleepiness, or another health concern, a clinician is the appropriate source for individualized advice.

5. Create a short closing-time routine

Use the last part of the evening to remove a few predictable obstacles from the next morning. The examples in the Bob Vila article include loading the dishwasher, packing lunch, wiping counters, and choosing clothes. Pick only the actions that solve a real morning problem; a routine that is too long is easier to abandon.

Keep the sequence in the same order and attach it to an existing event, such as finishing dinner or brushing your teeth. When the routine ends, leave the kitchen or entryway in the state you want to encounter tomorrow. The article’s claim is practical: preparation can make the next morning smoother. It is not a guarantee that every morning will be calm.

6. Do genuinely tiny tasks immediately

For a job that takes about two minutes, consider doing it when you notice it rather than creating a future list. Putting a dish in the dishwasher and replacing an empty toilet-paper roll are the article’s examples. The point is to close a task while the required object is already in front of you.

“Two minutes” is a rule of thumb in this advice, not a scientifically established threshold. Use judgment: a quick action can be immediate, while a job that expands into a larger repair or cleaning session belongs on a scheduled list. If you are busy, note the larger task and return to the immediate environment instead of turning every interruption into an unplanned project.

7. Display items that make you feel good

Give favorite photographs, artwork, or meaningful objects a deliberate place in a comfortable corner or on a wall. Rotate them if the display starts to disappear into the background. Keep the arrangement easy to dust and avoid filling every surface; the goal is a few intentional reminders, not another source of visual noise.

Bob Vila describes personal objects as a way to make a space feel calming or positive. That response is individual. Choose items that genuinely matter to the people who use the room, and avoid displaying possessions out of obligation if they create pressure instead of comfort.

8. Start an ongoing donation box

Put a box or sturdy bag in a closet, laundry area, or another convenient location. When you find something you no longer want, place it there immediately. When the container is full, check that its contents are clean and acceptable for the organization you plan to use, then arrange a donation or another appropriate reuse route.

You do not need to buy a special organizer: the article’s suggestion works with a spare shipping box or reusable bin. Label the container if other household members might mistake it for storage. Set a size limit so the box does not become a permanent holding area, and do not donate items you may need for safety, legal, accessibility, or essential work reasons.

9. Add useful, comfortable light

Begin with maintenance rather than shopping. Clean a dusty window, open a blind during the day, or replace a window covering that blocks more light than you want. In the evening, a warm-toned bulb can create the cozy atmosphere described in the article; use a fixture and bulb that are compatible and safe for the fitting.

Bob Vila also associates good lighting with mood and cognitive performance, but the underlying studies are not supplied here. Treat those statements as general rationale, not as a measured promise. Prioritize glare control, adequate light for reading or cooking, and safe placement over brightness alone. Renters can often make reversible changes such as cleaning glass or swapping a bulb, while larger window alterations may require permission.

10. Tend to a houseplant

Choose a plant whose light, watering, and temperature needs match the room and the care you can reliably provide. A low-maintenance variety is the sensible starting point if you want minimal upkeep. Put it where you will notice it, check the soil according to that plant’s needs, and remove damaged leaves so care stays manageable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The article says plants can make a home feel more connected to nature and that caring for them may feel positive. Those are subjective benefits. Do not treat a houseplant as a guaranteed mood intervention or an air-purification solution; the source does not establish a measured air-quality effect for a particular plant or room. If pets or children share the home, check whether the chosen species is safe for them.

If your main obstacle is… Start with… Why this is a sensible fit
Mornings feel scattered A closing-time routine It moves a few decisions to the evening
Your room looks chaotic One visual-clutter zone It creates a defined, visible win without a whole-house cleanout
Work follows you into the evening A separate work surface A physical boundary helps mark the change of role
You keep postponing tiny chores The immediate two-minute rule It prevents selected minor tasks from accumulating
You want a personal lift without rearranging furniture A meaningful display It changes the room through a few objects you already own
You want a recurring care ritual A suitable houseplant The task repeats at a scale you can choose

There is no requirement to adopt all ten. Adding several at once can turn a low-effort idea into a demanding project, especially if you share space, work irregular hours, or have limited mobility. Select one action, make its cue obvious, and reassess whether it is helping before adding another.

A low-motivation starting plan

  1. Pick one location or transition. Choose the bed, the work surface, the kitchen counter, the entryway, or the bedroom boundary. A concrete place is easier to act on than a goal such as “get organized.”
  2. Define the smallest repeatable version. For example, straighten the bed rather than redesign the bedroom, or sort only today’s mail rather than every paper you own.
  3. Remove one source of friction. Put the hamper where clothes land, keep the donation box where unwanted items appear, or place the charging cable outside the bedroom.
  4. Attach the action to a reliable cue. Use waking, finishing dinner, shutting down work, or turning off the bathroom light as the prompt. The cue should already happen; do not depend on remembering a new schedule.
  5. Review after several repetitions. Keep the task if it makes the next transition easier or the space more usable. Shrink or replace it if it repeatedly creates more work than it removes.

What these suggestions can and cannot establish

The Bob Vila article, updated January 23, 2023, presents these actions as accessible ways to feel more satisfied, productive, or less stressed when motivation is low. It does not report named statistics, controlled tests, or guaranteed outcomes. The benefits are best understood as plausible, personal effects of cues, preparation, environmental changes, and small completed actions.

That distinction matters for sleep, mood, concentration, lighting, and plants. A screen-free bedroom may be worth trying, but the sleep explanation is specifically attributed to the Sleep Foundation rather than independently confirmed here. Better light may make a room easier to use, but it is not a substitute for treatment of a health condition. A plant can be enjoyable, but it should not be relied on to purify indoor air or resolve depression or anxiety.

For the source’s full list and original framing, see Kat Hodgins’s Bob Vila article. Use the suggestions as adjustable household experiments: keep the parts that fit your life, and discard any task that adds pressure without a practical payoff.
