1. Add open shelving above or beside the appliances

3. Reclaim doors and shallow gaps
A door rack or shallow shelf can hold small bottles, brushes, mesh bags and spare clothespins where a full cabinet will not fit. This is useful in a laundry closet with little wall depth or in a room whose walls are already occupied by machines.
Protect the door swing
Before mounting anything, open the door through its full range and check nearby trim, appliances and handles. The organizer must not prevent the door from latching or collide with a washer lid. Keep sorting usable
Place the containers at the point where dirty clothes arrive, and label them if family members sort independently. Leave enough clearance to lift a full hamper without hitting a shelf or appliance door. 6. Build a compact air-drying station
Air-drying does not require a permanent, full-size rack. A wall-mounted rack, hanging rod, retractable line or folding rack can provide drying capacity while preserving the floor when folded or retracted. A rod above a counter can also let shirts drip-dry before they are moved elsewhere.
Choose the installation style

Keep the board in the work zone

8. Add a folding and mending surface
A dedicated surface prevents clean laundry from landing on the floor. Options include a counter over front-load machines, a wall-mounted desk that folds down, or a repurposed table sized for the room. The surface can also hold a small sewing kit or stain-treatment station while clothes are being repaired.
Preserve appliance access
Check that the surface does not block a top-load lid, front-load door, detergent drawer or service access. Use a simple movement test
- Walk in carrying a full hamper.
- Open each appliance door or lid fully.
- Move a load from washer to dryer without turning sideways or moving a fixed object.
- Pull out the cart, lower the folding surface and deploy the drying rack one at a time.
- Return everything to its storage position and confirm that the room door still opens freely.
If any step requires shifting multiple containers, reduce the number of items or move them closer to the task they support. The goal is a clear sequence from sorting to washing, drying, folding and storing—not maximum container count.

Small laundry closet
