Light painting is a long-exposure photography technique: while the camera stays still and the shutter is open, you illuminate a subject or move a light through the frame. You can start with a flashlight and a sturdy tripod; specialized lights are optional. The ten tools and techniques below explain what each adds and where extra care is needed.
Start with a stable camera and a light source
Choose a dark location, mount the camera securely, and use a long exposure so the camera can record light added during the shot. Keep the camera still throughout: movement can blur the fixed parts of the scene even when the light trails are intentional. A flashlight or torch is enough for a first attempt. Nikon’s light-painting guide and Fujifilm’s guide to painting with light both describe this basic approach.
- Set the camera on a sturdy tripod and compose the frame.
- Choose a long exposure and arrange for the shutter to stay open while you illuminate the scene. Exact settings depend on the camera, surroundings, and desired effect.
- Use a compatible remote release or camera app to trigger the shutter without touching the camera.
- Move the light or illuminate selected areas, then review the image and adjust the light’s movement, distance, or time on.
10 tools and techniques to shape the image
1. A sturdy tripod
A tripod holds the camera in place so the background and other fixed scene details remain sharp while you move the light. Fujifilm recommends a sturdy tripod, and Canon Canada’s light-painting guide likewise notes its role in avoiding camera shake during long exposures.
2. A remote release or compatible camera app
Pressing the shutter button can introduce vibration, so a remote release—or an app that supports remote shooting for your camera—can help. Fujifilm lists a remote release and its Camera Remote app as options; Canon advises avoiding camera contact during long exposures. Check compatibility for your camera model before relying on an app or accessory.

3. A flashlight or torch
This is the simplest starter light. Sweep it across a subject to reveal chosen details, or move it through the frame to create a visible trail. A torch can be directed and moved by hand, making it easy to experiment without buying a specialized light. Fujifilm puts it simply: “A simple torch is a great tool for painting with light.”
4. Selective light painting
Instead of lighting the entire scene evenly, illuminate only chosen parts of a subject. This can add depth and dimension by bringing attention to particular forms or details while leaving other areas darker. Nikon’s guide by Nikon Ambassador Dave Black describes using light selectively across a subject.

5. Control the light’s distance and movement
Change how close the flashlight is to the subject, how you move it, and how long it shines on an area. Those choices change the result from one exposure to the next. Dave Black explains: “How you move the flashlight across the subject, how close you bring it to the subject, the amount of time the light is on—all of that’s going to change the picture every single time.”
6. LED strips for ribbon-like trails
A strip of LEDs can be twirled to create ribbon-like trails, offering a different shape from a handheld torch. Fujifilm presents LED strips as an optional effect rather than a basic requirement. How the trail appears depends on how the strip is moved during the exposure.

7. Glow sticks for colored trails
Glow sticks are another accessible light source for making trails. Canon Asia includes them alongside torches in its light-painting guide. Their appearance in the photograph depends on the movement and exposure, just as it does with other moving lights.
8. A speedlight or external flash for portraits
A camera-compatible Speedlite or external flash can add a brief pulse of light to a long exposure. Canon describes using this approach to expose and freeze a portrait subject while other light painting takes place during the exposure. It is a more specialized setup than a flashlight: confirm that the flash works with the camera and that you know how to use it for the intended exposure.

9. Dark surroundings and exposure planning
Dark conditions help prevent ambient light from forming an unwanted image while the shutter is open. The right exposure depends on what else is in the frame: Canon gives an illustrative example in which an exposure around 10 seconds against a dark background tends to keep that background dark, while a longer exposure with a lit cityscape can include more surroundings. These are examples, not universal settings; adjust for the scene and the effect you want.

10. Burning wool—an advanced effect with fire hazards
Burning wool can create an intense trail, but flying or detached burning material presents a fire hazard. Fujifilm advises practicing first, taking sensible safety precautions, keeping a bucket of water nearby, and preventing the burning wool from detaching and flying off. Treat this as an advanced effect, not a casual beginner technique.

For a first session, a tripod, a flashlight, and a dark setting are enough to explore both selective illumination and trails. Add a remote if your camera supports one and you want to reduce contact with the camera; try other light sources when you have a specific effect in mind.
