An old door can become useful furniture, storage, a display surface, a garden feature, or another door. The best project depends on its condition, construction, dimensions and the strength the finished piece must carry. Use the idea list below as a menu, then inspect and measure your door before cutting or attaching hardware.

This roundup draws on documented examples from Remodelaholic, Lowe’s, This Old House, Community Forklift and Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Those sources show possibilities rather than tested plans, load ratings, prices or durability comparisons, so treat every build as a project that needs its own measurements and reinforcement decisions.

Choose the right door before choosing a project

Look for rot, insect damage, delamination, severe warping, split rails and loose joints. Lowe’s cautions that significant rot or structural damage can make a door unsuitable for upcycling. A sound solid-wood or well-built paneled door can support more demanding furniture than a damaged or lightweight hollow-core door, while louvered and glazed doors are especially useful for ventilation or display.

Door characteristic Good matches Likely work required Important check
Solid, sound, flat door Tables, benches, desks, headboards, shelves Cleaning, trimming, edge treatment, legs or brackets Confirm it is flat and strong enough for the intended load
Paneled door Headboards, wall décor, frames, console tables, bookcases Painting, hardware, backing, legs or shelves Measure panel layout before drilling or cutting
Hollow-core door Light-duty wall art, screens, organizers and display panels Reinforce edges and mounting points Do not assume the skin alone can hold heavy hardware
Louvered door Ventilated cabinets, shutters, screens, plant supports Cleaning, hinge work, framing or edge reinforcement Check that louvers move freely and are not brittle
Glazed or partly glazed door Mirrors, photo displays, cabinets, room dividers Retain, replace or safely cover glass; add backing Inspect glazing putty and every pane for cracks
Weathered exterior door Porch décor, garden gates, potting benches, bars Stabilizing, sealing, weather-resistant supports Remove failing paint and address moisture damage

Dimensions matter whenever the door must fit an opening or provide a specific footprint. This Old House’s door-fitting guidance is for replacement work, not every decorative project, but it illustrates the measuring discipline required. Tom Silva notes, “When replacing a vintage door with a new one, you often have go the custom route to match the 2-to-2¼-inch thickness of most older doors.” Older doors may need trimming or other modification to fit a new opening.

SMARTSTANDARD 6.8 FT Barn Door Hardware Kit -Fits 40" Wide Door Panel
  • Why Choose Us: The barn door track is crafted from high-quality alloy steel with a black powder-coated finish, making it resistant to rust, moisture, and dust.Every track and roller is rigorously factory-tested and proven to withstand 100,000 open/close cycles — delivering smooth, quiet, and long-lasting performance.
  • DIY-Friendly Installation: The track is pre-drilled with standard 16-inch hole spacing to match your wall studs. A detailed, step-by-step instruction manual with clear illustrations is included, allowing for a straightforward DIY setup. If you have any questions, our support team is ready to help—no need to hire a carpenter or contractor, saving you time and money.
  • Complete Hardware Kit (Door Not Included): This all-in-one package comes with everything needed for assembly: spliced track sections, 2 rollers, 2 door stoppers, 2 anti-jump blocks, and all necessary mounting screws and anchors. A precise checklist is provided in the manual. Please note, this is a hardware-only kit—the door panel is not included.
  • Weight Capacity & Door Compatibility: Designed to support doors weighing up to 220 lbs, with a thickness range of 1-3/8" to 1-3/4". To ensure your door fully covers the opening, the door panel should be at least 2 inches wider than the opening width.
  • Maximize Your Space with Sliding Design: Unlike traditional swinging doors, this sliding barn door hardware glides along the wall, freeing up valuable floor space behind the door. It gives you the flexibility to add storage or reconfigure your layout, and makes it easy to open up multiple rooms without the clearance hassle of swing doors.

Prepare, measure and work safely

  1. Document the door. Record height, width, thickness, weight, swing direction, panel layout and any glass or louvers. Photograph both faces before disassembly.
  2. Stabilize it. Tighten loose joints, repair splits and remove failing hardware. Do not build around hidden rot or a soft hinge stile.
  3. Clean carefully. Vacuum first, then wash with a suitable cleaner. If old paint may contain lead, use local lead-safe guidance and avoid creating dust until the coating is assessed.
  4. Plan every cut and hole. Mark from a square reference edge. Account for tabletop overhangs, leg positions, shelf spacing and clearance for hinges or handles.
  5. Choose tools for the actual step. A project may need only a screwdriver and brackets; a fitting or furniture build may require a measuring tape, circular saw, combination square, hammer, pencil, respirator, screws, shims, utility knife and wood chisel. This Old House lists those tools for a door-fitting project, not as a universal shopping list.
  6. Seal the finished piece. Indoor paint, clear finish or wax protects against handling. Outdoor projects need a protective finish, weather-resistant supports and reinforced construction, as Lowe’s examples emphasize.
  7. Test before use. Check for wobble, sharp edges, pinch points, unstable tip-prone furniture and secure wall anchoring. The available sources do not provide load testing or safety certification.

Where to find salvage doors

Documented sourcing options include local renovation projects, basements, thrift stores, salvage yards, online listings, reuse warehouses and ReStore locations. Remodelaholic, Community Forklift and Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity ReStore all point to reuse-oriented sources, but inventory and condition vary by location and date. Measure your intended space before buying, and ask whether the door is solid, hollow-core, glazed, painted, warped or previously exposed to moisture.

Match effort to the result you need

  • Lowest intervention: Clean, paint and hang the door as wall art, a sign, a photo display or a message board.
  • Moderate intervention: Add hooks, shelves, mirror backing, legs or brackets for organizers, consoles and bookcases.
  • Higher intervention: Cut, reinforce, upholster or engineer a frame for desks, beds, benches, swings and fitted openings.
  • Outdoor intervention: Plan for sealing, drainage, weather-resistant supports and stronger joinery than an indoor decorative project.

Choose by function first, then by appearance. A beautiful but rotten door is a poor table; a plain, straight door may be an excellent work surface. The sources provide inspiration and examples, not universal plans, comparative costs or tested capacity ratings, so adapt dimensions, fasteners and reinforcement to your particular door and site.
