For most Chromebook artists, Infinite Painter is the best painting-first choice, Krita offers the deepest toolset, Concepts is best for infinite-canvas sketching, and Clip Studio Paint is the strongest option for comics and manga. Your experience depends heavily on the Chromebook itself: Android app support, ChromeOS version, RAM, stylus compatibility, and whether Google Play is enabled. This guide separates painting apps from design, note-taking, and browser-editing tools so you can choose the right fit.
Chromebooks can run drawing software through Android apps, web apps and progressive web apps, and—on compatible models—Linux applications. Google Play availability is not universal, particularly on school- or workplace-managed devices. Check Google’s Chromebook compatibility guidance before committing to an app.
Quick comparison
| App | Best for | Chromebook route | Stylus and export notes | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Krita | Serious painting, comics and animation | Android/ChromeOS; Linux is also possible | Desktop-style layers and professional formats | The Android/ChromeOS Play build is marked beta |
| Infinite Painter | Natural digital painting | Android, optimized for ChromeOS | Strong brush and stylus workflow | Advanced features may require payment |
| Concepts | Infinite-canvas sketching and diagrams | Android/ChromeOS | Vector-hybrid strokes; PNG, PSD, SVG and PDF options vary by plan | Platform feature parity is still developing |
| Clip Studio Paint | Manga, comics and professional illustration | Android on supported ChromeOS devices | Pen input, comic tools and broad file compatibility | Subscription and hardware requirements |
| ibis Paint X | Anime, manga and social art | Android | Large brush and asset library; time-lapse tools | Ads, premium features and a crowded interface |
| Sketchbook | Beginners and quick sketches | Android/ChromeOS availability should be checked | Approachable raster workflow and tablet support | Fewer specialized professional tools |
| ArtFlow | Lightweight Android painting | Android | Good for casual painting on modest hardware | Device and premium-feature limitations |
| MediBang Paint | Comic and manga beginners | Android/web availability varies | Panels, tones, brushes and cloud features | Verify the current Chromebook build |
| Canva | Posters, classroom work and graphic design | Web app and Android | Easy mixed text-and-image projects | Not a painterly brush engine |
| Canvas by Google | Simple doodles and handwriting | Web app | Fast, lightweight and low friction | Very limited layers and export workflow |
| Photopea | PSD editing and compositing | Web app | Layers, masks, selections and broad file support | More image editor than drawing app |
1. Krita: best overall feature set for serious artists
Krita is the strongest choice if you want a desktop-style painting application on a Chromebook—provided your device can handle it and you accept an important qualification. Its tools cover raster painting, illustration, comics, storyboards, animation, filters, selections, color-managed workflows, flexible workspaces and Python scripting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe current Google Play listing identifies the Android/ChromeOS release as beta and says it is not yet suitable for real work. That makes Krita’s feature set impressive, but its Chromebook version should not be treated as a guaranteed production replacement for the desktop release. Large canvases, many layers and animation can also overwhelm low-memory Chromebooks.

Best for: experienced artists, comics, animation and users who want extensive layers and brush controls.
Chromebook route: Android/ChromeOS through Google Play; a Linux installation is an advanced alternative, not automatically a better one.
Best alternative: Infinite Painter for a more mobile-first painting experience.
See Krita on Google Play and read its current beta qualification before starting important work.
2. Infinite Painter: best natural painting experience
Infinite Painter is the best fit for artists who want realistic brushes and a focused, mobile-first painting workflow. Its brush engine, blending tools and stylus-oriented interface are more approachable than a full desktop-style application. An Android Developers case study describes the app as optimized for ChromeOS, including drawing directly on the screen with a stylus or finger.
Performance still depends on the processor, RAM, display and pen implementation in your Chromebook. Some advanced features may require an in-app purchase, so check the live Google Play listing rather than relying on an old price.
Best for: concept art, painting and users who want a polished touch-screen workflow.

3. Concepts: best for infinite-canvas sketching
Choose Concepts for planning, diagrams, architecture, industrial design, mind maps and visual notes—not as your first choice for textured raster painting. Its vector-hybrid strokes remain scalable on an infinite canvas, with layers, grids, snapping, shape guides, measurement and custom brushes.
The advertised free plan includes an infinite canvas, unlimited drawings and folders, five layers, grids, snapping, scaling, measuring and basic JPG export. The vendor currently advertises $4.99 per month, $29.99 per year, or a $39.99 one-time Essentials purchase in U.S. dollars; regional and storefront prices can differ. Export options such as PNG, PSD, SVG, DXF and PDF depend on the plan. The vendor also says platform parity among iOS, Windows, Android and ChromeOS remains in progress.

5. ibis Paint X: best free anime and social-art option
ibis Paint X is a strong choice for anime, manga, fan art and social-art workflows. It provides a large brush and asset ecosystem, layers, stabilization, selection and transformation tools, recording and time-lapse features, and community-oriented learning resources.
The trade-off is a busier interface and a monetization model involving advertising and in-app purchases. Do not describe it simply as “free” without explaining those limits. Pressure and palm rejection depend on the Chromebook, pen and app combination; test them before beginning a large project.

9. Canva: best for classroom projects and graphic design
Canva is the right choice when “drawing” means making posters, presentations, social graphics, whiteboards or mixed text-and-image artwork. Its browser-first workflow, templates and collaboration features are easier for many classroom and team projects than a painting application.
Canva is not a substitute for Krita, Infinite Painter or Clip Studio Paint if you need a natural-media brush engine, advanced layer compositing or professional comic production. Its free tier and Pro plans also differ by region, billing cycle and promotion.
Best for: teachers, students, posters, presentations and simple illustrations.

10. Canvas by Google: best for quick doodles and handwriting
Canvas by Google is the fastest option for a simple sketch, handwritten note or basic diagram. It opens in the browser and has a minimal interface with low hardware demands.
That simplicity is also its limitation: it lacks the layers, brush customization, editing depth and professional export workflow needed for finished illustration.
Best for: quick classroom notes, annotations and temporary doodles.
Chromebook route: web app.
Best alternative: Sketchbook for a real sketchbook workflow, or Concepts for scalable diagrams.
11. Photopea: best browser-based PSD editor
Photopea is the best Chromebook choice when you need layers, masks, selections, filters or PSD compatibility in a browser. It is particularly useful for editing and compositing existing artwork, preparing assets, and working with Photoshop-style files without installing desktop software.

It is more of an image editor than a drawing-first application. Brush latency, pressure behavior and offline access depend on the browser, device and service implementation. Save and export deliberately rather than assuming a browser tab is a permanent copy of your work.
Best for: PSD editing, compositing and browser-based image work.
Chromebook route: web app.
Best alternative: Krita for painting, or Canva for template-driven design.
Which drawing app should you choose?
- Serious painting: Choose Krita for the broadest toolset, but account for its current Android/ChromeOS beta warning. Choose Infinite Painter for a smoother mobile-first experience.
- Comics and manga: Choose Clip Studio Paint if your Chromebook meets Android 13 and storage requirements. Choose MediBang Paint for a lighter starting point.
- Anime and social art: Choose ibis Paint X if you accept ads and premium unlocks.
- Infinite canvas and technical sketches: Choose Concepts.
- Beginners: Start with Sketchbook or Infinite Painter; choose Canvas if you only need simple notes and doodles.
- Low-end Chromebook: Start with Canvas, Sketchbook or ArtFlow, use smaller canvases and keep browser tabs closed.
- Posters and classroom design: Choose Canva.
- PSD editing: Choose Photopea.
- No traditional subscription: Consider Krita, Concepts Essentials where available, Canvas or an app’s free tier—but confirm current feature restrictions.
How to check Chromebook compatibility
Install an Android app
- Open the Launcher and start the Google Play Store.
- Search for the app and select Install.
- Open it from the Launcher.
- Before starting important work, test pen pressure, palm rejection, saving, reopening and export.
If the Play Store is missing, your Chromebook may not support Android apps, ChromeOS may be outdated, or an administrator may have disabled them. The developer may also exclude your device architecture or require a newer Android version. Do not sideload an unverified APK; use the official web version, a supported Linux build or another app instead.
Use a web app
- Open the official site in Chrome and sign in if required.
- Use the site’s install prompt if it offers one.
- If it does not, use Chrome’s current More menu and choose the option for creating a shortcut; Chrome’s labels can change between releases.
- Test saving, reopening and exporting while online and offline.
A browser shortcut is not automatically an offline app. Offline storage, account checks, cloud libraries and synchronization depend on the service.
Try Linux only as an advanced option
Linux applications can provide desktop features on compatible Chromebooks, but they may introduce pen-mapping problems, poorer graphics acceleration, file-permission friction, higher storage and RAM demands, and more difficult updates. Touch input and palm rejection may not behave like they do in an Android app. Linux Krita is therefore not automatically superior to the Android/ChromeOS build.
Stylus, pressure and palm-rejection checklist
A touchscreen Chromebook is not automatically a good drawing tablet. Distinguish between an active USI pen, Wacom EMR or manufacturer-specific pen, finger input, and an external USB or Bluetooth tablet. Pressure sensitivity and palm rejection can depend on the Chromebook’s hardware, ChromeOS input layer and app—not the app alone.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Identify the Chromebook model and update ChromeOS.
- Identify whether the pen uses USI, EMR, Bluetooth or USB.
- Check whether the app supports pressure on ChromeOS, rather than only on iPad or Windows.
- Connect an external tablet directly by USB when possible.
- Look for stylus-only or pressure settings inside the app.
- Test a short stroke at several pressures before buying premium features.
Wacom’s ChromeOS software guidance and compatibility checker list supported device and software combinations, but compatibility remains model-specific. If palm rejection is poor, try stylus-only input, a drawing glove, another app or an external tablet.
Offline work and safe file handling
Android apps often support some offline work, but cloud libraries, assets, account checks and synchronization may require internet access. Browser apps work offline only when the developer has implemented offline storage or a suitable PWA. School-managed devices can restrict both offline storage and third-party accounts.
Run this test before travelling or working in class:
- Create a new drawing and save it.
- Export a PNG to a known location such as Downloads.
- Turn off Wi-Fi.
- Close and reopen the app.
- Open the saved project and export it again.
- Reconnect and confirm that synchronization does not overwrite the local copy.
For important work, keep a flattened PNG for viewing and a layered native project file for editing. Use PSD or another interchange format when supported. Android app-private storage, Downloads, Google Drive, Linux folders and cloud-specific libraries are different locations, so export deliberately and periodically create a second backup.

A newer touchscreen Chromebook with a compatible USI or integrated pen can be excellent for sketching. A non-touch, low-end Chromebook is better suited to web apps, mouse drawing or an external pen tablet. For Krita or Clip Studio Paint, more RAM and storage matter because large canvases, many layers, animation and 3D references are demanding. Smaller canvases, fewer layers, frequent exports and fewer open browser tabs help older devices.
Chromebooks are a poor fit for artists who require full desktop plug-ins, advanced color-management hardware, very large canvases, high-end 3D, extensive font management, non-Android desktop applications or a guaranteed studio pipeline. The right app cannot remove those platform limitations.
