Old picture frames can become useful organizers, writable surfaces, serving pieces, and wall art with surprisingly little new material. The best project depends on the frame’s size, depth, strength, and whether its glass and original backing are still intact. These 11 ideas show exactly what to keep, what to replace, and where a frame needs reinforcement before it becomes something new.

Choose a project that matches your frame

Start by removing dust and checking every joint, corner, hanging point, and glazing clip. A shallow, delicate frame is suited to a chalkboard, calendar, or lightweight display. A deeper, sturdier frame can accept cork, a shadowbox insert, or a small shelf. Keep intact glass for dry-erase writing, a calendar, or a tray surface; remove it for mesh organizers and string displays. A mirror requires a precisely cut insert, while any project expected to hold weight needs secure construction rather than decorative framing alone.

1. Make a chalkboard message center

A framed chalkboard gives a kitchen, mudroom, or workspace a defined place for reminders. Remove the artwork and glass, then measure the opening. Use a rigid insert that fits snugly and apply chalkboard paint according to the product directions. Several thin coats generally produce a more even writing surface than one heavy coat, but follow the label’s drying instructions rather than assuming a universal cure time.

Assembly steps

  1. Clean the frame and repair loose corners before painting the insert.
  2. Paint the insert with chalkboard paint and let it dry fully.
  3. Return the cured panel to the frame and secure it with the existing points or a suitable backing.
  4. Attach the hanging hardware for the finished weight and mount it where chalk dust can be managed.

Use chalkboard paint as the specific shopping phrase when looking for the coating. The frame can stay natural, be painted to match the room, or receive a contrasting finish.

2. Turn the glass into a dry-erase board

This is one of the simplest transformations because the frame’s glass becomes the writing surface. Clean and dry both sides of the glass, place a sheet of paper or colored background behind it, and close the frame. Dry-erase marker writes on the glass and can be wiped away, allowing the artwork, schedule, or decorative paper behind it to change later.

Make it practical

  • Use a background with enough contrast for the marker color you plan to use.
  • Keep the glass completely dry before reassembly so the paper does not wrinkle or trap moisture.
  • Label the frame with a small reminder to use dry-erase markers, not permanent ones.
  • Test the marker in a corner before covering the entire surface.

A glass board works well for grocery lists, weekly tasks, or a family message center without permanently altering the frame.

3. Build a fabric-covered pinboard

Replace the artwork with cork or corkboard to create a place for notes, invitations, and small reminders. Measure the opening and check the frame’s depth before buying the insert; the cork, optional fabric, and backing must fit without forcing the frame apart.

Layer the insert

  1. Cut the corkboard to the opening size, or have it cut to those measurements.
  2. If desired, stretch fabric smoothly over the cork and secure it on the back.
  3. Place the covered board in the frame and add a firm backing.
  4. Check that pins can enter without pushing the insert out of the frame.

A patterned fabric turns a functional board into a coordinated wall accent. Use a frame with enough depth for the pinboard layers rather than compressing a thick insert into a shallow molding.

4. Create a jewelry or earring organizer

Screen or chicken wire across the opening provides many attachment points for earrings and lightweight jewelry. Remove the glass, fit the mesh to the back of the frame, and secure it evenly so the grid stays taut. Fabric and the original backing can cover rough edges on the rear.

Finish the back safely

  • Trim or fold cut wire ends away from the wall-facing side.
  • Use fabric or backing to hide sharp edges and protect the wall.
  • Choose hooks and fasteners that match the finished frame’s weight.
  • Leave enough clearance behind the mesh for earring backs and larger pieces.

This format is especially useful for earrings because the hooks can pass directly through the mesh. Heavier necklaces may need separate hooks attached to a solid backing instead of relying on the wire alone.

5. Recast a frame as a serving or vanity tray

A glass-front frame can become a decorative tray when its perimeter is sturdy and comfortable to lift. Keep the glass as the tray surface, place a decorative image or mirror beneath it, and secure the layers so nothing shifts. Adhesive and felt are used in mirrored-tray instructions to finish the underside; handles can be added when the frame and fasteners can support them.

Construction and care

  1. Remove the backing and clean the glass thoroughly.
  2. Arrange the paper, artwork, or mirror beneath the glass.
  3. Use an adhesive appropriate for the materials and allow it to dry completely.
  4. Apply felt to the underside to protect furniture.
  5. Add handles only after checking that the frame’s joints and backing can tolerate lifting.

Treat this as a design project rather than proof that every old frame is food-safe. Use it for wrapped foods, drinks, cosmetics, or décor only when the surface and construction suit that use. If spray-painting the frame, work in a well-ventilated area and let every coated part dry before reassembly.

6. Make a reusable calendar

Print or draw a calendar grid on paper, place it behind the glass, and write appointments on the front with a dry-erase marker. Colored paper can turn the grid into a seasonal accent, while a neutral background keeps the calendar legible year-round.

Set up the layout

  1. Choose a grid with enough room for the number of entries you normally make.
  2. Center the sheet behind the glass and secure it so it does not drift.
  3. Write dates, names, or tasks on the glass rather than on the paper.
  4. Erase and rewrite each month while reusing the same frame.

A larger frame gives each day more writing space; a small frame is better for a compact meal plan or weekly overview.

7. Replace the artwork with a fitted mirror

Measure the frame opening in several places before ordering mirror glass. If the original glass is available, it can serve as a pattern for the cut. When the mirror is a different thickness, use retaining points or another support method suited to that thickness so the insert cannot rattle or fall out.

Mirror-fitting checklist

  • Measure the visible opening and the recess that holds the insert.
  • Account for any bevel or edge treatment when specifying the cut.
  • Protect the mirror edges during handling and installation.
  • Reinstall the backing only after the mirror is seated evenly on all sides.
  • Use hanging hardware appropriate to the completed frame’s weight.

A mirror can enlarge the visual impact of a narrow entry, bedroom, or gallery wall while preserving the character of an ornate frame.

8. Add a shallow shelf or shadowbox

A deep, sturdy frame can surround a small display box or shallow shelf. Add boards to the back to create depth for objects, then secure every joint before mounting the piece. Keep the contents lightweight unless the frame, boards, fasteners, and wall anchors have been deliberately engineered for more.

Two useful formats

Shadowbox

Build a closed or open-backed compartment behind the frame for shells, small keepsakes, or other three-dimensional objects. The frame acts as the visual border while the added boards create the recess.

Display shelf

Install a horizontal board across the lower portion of a deep frame and use the remaining opening as a backdrop. This works for small décor, but a lightweight frame should not be used for heavy books or anything that could injure someone if the assembly fails.

9. Build an entryway key rack

Turn the frame into a defined landing spot for keys by removing the artwork and attaching hooks to a backing panel. The panel can be painted, covered with paper, or left as wood to complement the frame.

Install it securely

  1. Mark hook positions so keys do not collide when several are hanging.
  2. Fasten the hooks through the backing or into a solid board behind it.
  3. Reattach the backing firmly to the frame.
  4. Use wall hardware matched to the total weight of the frame and keys.

Place the rack near the entry at a height that is easy to reach, and leave enough clearance below it for larger key rings.

10. Display memories with string and clips

Remove the glass and original backing, then stretch horizontal strings across the frame opening. Small clips can hold photographs, cards, ticket stubs, or other memorabilia without permanently altering them. Space the strings so the pieces overlap attractively but remain easy to remove.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the display balanced

  • Attach both ends of every string securely to the frame or a rear support.
  • Use lightweight clips so the frame does not twist.
  • Arrange the heaviest pieces lower in the composition.
  • Leave a little empty space so new memories can be added without crowding the display.

This format turns changing photographs into part of the décor and avoids the need to cut or glue treasured items.

11. Arrange layered empty-frame wall art

Sometimes the prettiest reuse is to remove everything and let the frames themselves form a composition. Group empty frames by a related finish, color family, shape, or era. Mix sizes to create a visual path, or align similar rectangles for a more orderly arrangement.

  • Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.

Plan before making holes

  1. Lay the frames on the floor and test several groupings.
  2. Photograph the arrangement so you can reproduce the spacing on the wall.
  3. Mark the center and hanging points of each frame.
  4. Use wall hardware suited to each frame’s weight and the wall material.
  5. Check the arrangement from across the room before tightening every fastener.

Empty frames can surround a mirror, artwork, or a painted wall section, but they also work as a complete composition when their proportions and finishes relate to one another.

Materials to gather by project

There is no single shopping list for every frame conversion. Gather only what the selected design needs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Writing surfaces: chalkboard paint and a rigid insert, or intact glass with paper and a dry-erase marker.
  • Organizers: corkboard, screen or chicken wire, fabric, backing, clips, or hooks.
  • Reflective and serving projects: mirror glass, adhesive, felt, and optional handles.
  • Displays: boards, string, small clips, and suitable retaining or hanging hardware.

Measure the opening before purchasing inserts, and compare the insert thickness with the frame’s recess. That simple check prevents a corkboard, mirror, or backing panel from sitting proud of the molding or failing to stay captured.

Safety and durability checks

  • Repair loose joints before adding weight or hardware.
  • Wear eye protection when cutting or trimming wire, boards, or other inserts.
  • Handle glass and mirror edges carefully and use a professional glass cutter when the piece requires a precise cut.
  • Keep spray-paint work ventilated and wait for coatings and adhesives to dry before reassembly.
  • Protect walls behind wire organizers and trays with a finished backing or felt where appropriate.
  • Choose anchors and hanging hardware for the completed object, not merely for the empty frame.
  • Do not use a lightweight decorative frame as a load-bearing shelf.

With those checks complete, an unused frame can become a practical object that still looks intentional: a place to write, store, display, serve, or simply add structure to a wall.
