Short answer: GIMP is the best broad free desktop substitute for Photoshop, Photopea is the most practical browser option for PSD work, and Krita is the best choice for digital painting. Photographers should look at darktable or RawTherapee, while Canva, Adobe Express, Pixlr, Photoshop Express, PhotoDirector Essential, and MyEdit are better for quicker, simpler, mobile, template-based, or AI-assisted tasks.
There is no single free program that reproduces every Photoshop workflow equally well. The useful question is not “Which app is exactly like Photoshop?” but “Which app fits the work I need to do?”

There is no single free Photoshop replacement
The best substitute depends on what you use Photoshop for. GIMP is the broadest free desktop raster editor. Photopea is the closest browser-based choice for PSD files. Krita is better for digital painting and illustration. darktable and RawTherapee are photography specialists for cataloging and developing RAW files. Inkscape handles vector artwork, while Canva, Adobe Express, Pixlr, Photoshop Express, PhotoDirector Essential, and MyEdit prioritize speed, templates, mobile editing, or AI-assisted enhancement.
That distinction matters because these are not twelve equivalent Photoshop clones. Some are full desktop applications, some run in a browser, some focus on painting or RAW conversion, and some are freemium content-creation tools. Choose by workflow rather than by the word “alternative.”
Quick comparison
| Tool | Best for | Type | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| GIMP | General-purpose raster editing | Free, open-source desktop app | Technical interface and no complete Photoshop feature parity |
| Pixlr | Fast browser edits and AI tools | Browser-based freemium editor | Less suitable for complex, long-form desktop projects |
| Photoshop Express | Simple mobile touch-ups | Mobile-focused Adobe app | Not a layered desktop-compositing replacement |
| Adobe Express | Templates and social graphics | Browser and mobile content-creation platform | Less pixel-level control than Photoshop |
| Krita | Digital painting and illustration | Free, open-source desktop app | Its center of gravity is painting, not photographic retouching |
| Canva | Fast designs, presentations, and social content | Browser and app-based freemium platform | Template-led workflow rather than advanced raster editing |
| PhotoDirector Essential | Guided desktop editing and photo management | Freemium desktop software | Free version has paid limitations that can change |
| Photopea | PSD work in a browser | Browser-based editor | Performance and file fidelity depend on the device and document |
| darktable | Cataloging and developing RAW photographs | Free, open-source desktop workflow app | Not a general layer-based compositing tool |
| RawTherapee | Detailed RAW conversion | Free, open-source desktop RAW developer | Powerful controls can be less approachable for beginners |
| Inkscape | Logos, icons, typography, and vector artwork | Free, open-source vector editor | Does not directly replace Photoshop for raster photo editing |
| MyEdit | Quick online AI enhancement | Browser-based AI editor | Online tools and free-use limits may change frequently |
1. GIMP: the best general-purpose desktop replacement
Choose GIMP if you want the broadest free desktop toolkit for raster images. GIMP is free, open source, and available across major desktop platforms. It supports the core building blocks expected from a serious image editor: layers, channels, selections, masks and transformations, along with painting tools, retouching tools, scripting, plug-ins, and broad file-format support.
Recommended Free Tools
It can also open and work with PSD files, which makes it useful when collaborating with Photoshop users. That does not mean every Photoshop document will behave identically in GIMP. Proprietary features, unusual layer effects, advanced smart-object setups, or application-specific workflows may require adjustment. The fair comparison is breadth of raster-editing functionality—not perfect interface or feature parity.
GIMP is a good fit for
- Photo manipulation and retouching
- Layered compositing and image correction
- Cutouts, selections, transformations, and masking
- Users who want a serious desktop editor without a subscription
- People willing to learn a more technical interface
GIMP can paint, but painters should also consider Krita. GIMP is the stronger all-around choice when the project mixes photo editing, compositing, graphic work, and occasional painting.
2. Pixlr: the best for quick browser edits and AI tools
Choose Pixlr when convenience matters more than a full desktop workflow. Pixlr is browser-oriented and provides free access to quick editing tools, AI-assisted features, background removal, object removal, generative tools, collage functions, and other routine adjustments.
That makes it useful for social posts, blog images, product photos, thumbnails, and one-off touch-ups—especially when you do not want to install software or are working on modest hardware. A browser editor can also be easier to use on a shared or managed computer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Pixlr is not the best recommendation for a large layered project that will be revisited for months. Its paid plans can add content, AI credits, and ad-free access, so “free” should be understood as access to a free tier rather than a promise that every tool or allowance is unlimited.
3. Photoshop Express: the best for simple mobile touch-ups
Choose Photoshop Express for fast corrections on a phone or tablet. It is a simplified Adobe editing app, not a mobile version of the full Photoshop desktop workflow. Its strengths include one-touch fixes, cropping, exposure and contrast adjustments, effects, layouts, text, backgrounds, stickers, and quick sharing.
Photoshop Express makes sense when the job is to improve a snapshot, prepare an image for social media, add a quick effect, or make a correction before sharing. It is not the right tool for advanced masking, extensive layered compositing, detailed channel work, or a professional desktop production pipeline.
4. Adobe Express: the best for template-driven content
Choose Adobe Express when you are creating content rather than performing detailed pixel editing. Express is designed around quick graphics, templates, social posts, flyers, simple photo and video edits, document content, animation, and browser or mobile access.

Adobe’s no-cost plan includes basic editing tools, a limited selection of assets, standard photo, video, and document editing, and 5GB of storage. Premium adds more assets, features, and AI capacity. Those plan boundaries can change, so check the current plan details if a particular asset or AI tool is important to your project.
Express is a strong fit for classroom materials, small-business graphics, event flyers, social-media content, and users who value templates and speed. It is not a direct replacement for Photoshop’s deep layer-based workflow or precise compositing controls.
5. Krita: the best free Photoshop substitute for digital painting
Choose Krita if your main work is painting, illustration, concept art, comics, or 2D animation. Krita is free and open source, and its design is centered on the needs of artists rather than on photographic correction alone.
Its documented features include multiple brush engines, brush stabilizers, layer management, vector and text tools, animation support, color management, PSD support, GPU-enhanced canvas behavior, and Python scripting. Stabilizers can help with cleaner lines, while the brush system and layer tools support sketching, inking, coloring, texture work, and finished illustration.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Krita can edit photographs, but its center of gravity is different from Photoshop’s. It is usually the better recommendation for someone who wants to draw or paint from a blank canvas; GIMP or Photopea may be more natural for someone whose work is primarily photographic compositing.
Krita’s licensing also permits commercial work, so it is not restricted to trial or educational-only use. As with any open-source project, review the license and the terms attached to any separately sourced brushes, fonts, textures, or other assets you add.
6. Canva: the best for fast designs and social content
Choose Canva when the finished result is a designed layout rather than a carefully composited photograph. Canva’s free platform provides templates, stock media, fonts, drag-and-drop editing, image uploads, photo adjustments, collaboration, AI-assisted tools, and downloads in common formats.
It is particularly effective for social posts, presentations, flyers, invitations, classroom materials, product listings, simple brand graphics, and other repeatable designs. A non-designer can start with a template, replace the imagery and text, and produce a usable result quickly.
Canva is not a direct replacement for Photoshop’s advanced raster workflow. Its strength is layout and content production, not precise channel-level editing, intricate selections, or highly controlled compositing. Canva states that individual use is free, while some advanced AI photo-editing features require Canva Pro; confirm current plan boundaries before committing to a feature-dependent workflow.
7. CyberLink PhotoDirector Essential: the best guided freemium desktop option
Choose PhotoDirector Essential if you want a guided desktop application that combines editing, effects, AI tools, and photo management. The Essential edition is available as a free version, but it has paid limitations. The feature mix described for the product includes AI-assisted editing, layers, color grading, filters, effects, templates, and tools for managing a photo collection.
This can appeal to enthusiasts who want more structure than a bare-bones editor and who prefer having photo organization and editing in one application. It is less straightforward as a recommendation for professional work because export options, feature access, and other restrictions may depend on the current edition.
Before adopting it as your main editor, check the current restrictions directly: test the file formats you need, confirm whether the intended AI or export feature is available in Essential, and make sure the free version does not place an unwanted limitation on your final output.

This ensures easy connection to various devices, allowing beginner artists to set up quickly and focus on their creativity without compatibility concerns. Whether using a laptop, tablet, or desktop, the Deco 01 V3 provides a seamless experience, making it an ideal choice for those just starting their digital art journey
8. Photopea: the best browser substitute for PSD workflows
Choose Photopea when you need a Photoshop-style interface in a browser, especially for PSD handoffs. Photopea processes files locally in the browser and identifies PSD as its primary document format. It can open and save PSD files and supports layers, masks, layer styles, smart objects, adjustment layers, channels, paths, vector graphics, filters, Liquify, Puppet Warp, and multiple RAW formats.
That combination makes Photopea one of the most practical choices for students, freelancers, occasional editors, and anyone working on a computer where desktop installation is not possible. It is also useful when a client or collaborator expects a PSD-based handoff.
There are two important qualifications. First, browser performance depends on the computer, browser, memory, and document complexity. Second, PSD compatibility is not a guarantee of perfect Photoshop-file fidelity. A file using unsupported or proprietary features may open differently, so inspect the layers, masks, effects, text, and color appearance before delivering a final file.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Photopea can convert non-PSD files into PSD-based documents inside the editor, which is useful for bringing other formats into a layered workflow. Save an original copy before conversion, particularly when the source contains editable features that may not translate cleanly.
9. darktable: the best free option for RAW photography workflows
Choose darktable when your main job is importing, organizing, developing, and exporting camera RAW photographs. darktable is an open-source photography workflow application and RAW developer. Its workflow covers cataloging a collection, making non-destructive adjustments, enhancing images, and exporting finished files.
This makes darktable more comparable to a photography-management and RAW-development application than to Photoshop. It is a strong choice for photographers handling many images and wanting a camera-oriented, repeatable process.
Do not choose darktable expecting it to replace every layer-based Photoshop task. It is not the natural first choice for complex poster compositing, detailed multi-layer illustration, or extensive pixel-by-pixel construction. A practical combination is darktable for RAW development followed by GIMP, Krita, or another editor when a project needs deeper compositing or painting.

10. RawTherapee: the best for detailed RAW processing
Choose RawTherapee when you want granular control over RAW conversion and image quality. RawTherapee is free, cross-platform, open source, and licensed under GPLv3. It is built for non-destructive RAW processing and uses 32-bit floating-point processing. Its documented capabilities include advanced demosaicing, detailed color and sharpening controls, multiple-frame RAW support, dark-frame subtraction, flat-field correction, and broad camera support.
Those controls can be valuable when you want to fine-tune exposure, color, detail, and lens or sensor-related corrections rather than apply a quick preset. The trade-off is approachability: a specialist RAW developer can feel more complex than a simplified photo editor.
RawTherapee is not a general Photoshop clone. It is best understood as a precision RAW developer. Use it for camera files, then move to a raster editor if the project requires extensive layers, compositing, typography, or painted elements.
Version note: The official release history records RawTherapee 5.11 on August 25, 2024, and RawTherapee 5.12 on May 28, 2025. Release information is date-sensitive, so check the official downloads page for the version available when you install it.
11. Inkscape: the best free Photoshop complement for vector graphics
Choose Inkscape when the artwork needs to scale cleanly or remain editable as vector paths. Inkscape is a free, open-source vector graphics editor for GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS. SVG is its main format, and its typical uses include logos, icons, typography, illustrations, diagrams, and flowcharts.

- Compatibility: HUION graphics tablet supports Windows 7 or later/ macOS 10.12 or later/ Android 6.0 or later/ Linux (Ubuntu). A USB adapter is required to connect to a Mac computer. H1060P supports various mainstream design and drawing software, including PS, SAI, AI, CDR, etc. (Please note: The H1060P is compatible with Ubuntu, but it requires the use of the Xorg display server. Wayland is not supported.)
- NOTE: You can easily connect your phone to the art tablet via the OTG connector; while iPhone and iPad are NOT at the moment. The cursor will not show up in the SAMSUNG Galaxy S series at present. If you are not sure whether the product is compatible with your Phone or any help, please contact us.
It can import and export formats including AI, EPS, PDF, PS, and PNG. That makes it useful for creating a logo or icon that will later be placed into a raster composition, or for preparing scalable artwork for print and web use.
Inkscape does not directly replace Photoshop for raster photo editing. It belongs on this list because many people who search for a Photoshop alternative actually need vector artwork. If the project is a logo, diagram, icon set, or typography-based illustration, Inkscape may be the more appropriate tool.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →12. MyEdit: the best for lightweight online AI enhancement
Choose MyEdit for quick browser-based enhancement and creative effects. MyEdit is an online AI photo editor with more than 30 tools for enhancing, editing, and generating images. It can be convenient for hobbyists, social-media creators, and users who want a quick adjustment without learning a full desktop editor.
Its convenience comes with the usual online-tool trade-offs. Tool availability, processing limits, output restrictions, and free-use allowances can change more quickly than in mature desktop software. Check the current limits before relying on MyEdit for a batch job, client delivery, or a repeatable production process.
MyEdit is best treated as a focused convenience tool, not a professional replacement for Photoshop’s complete editing environment.

Useful combinations instead of one-for-one replacements
You do not have to force one application to handle every stage. A combination can be more effective than searching for a nonexistent free Photoshop clone.
- Photography: Use darktable for cataloging and RAW development, or RawTherapee when you want more granular conversion control. Use GIMP for complex compositing afterward.
- Digital art: Use Krita for sketching, painting, inking, and animation. Add Inkscape when the project includes logos, icons, or scalable vector lettering.
- PSD collaboration: Use Photopea for browser-based review and editing, but inspect complex files carefully before promising identical Photoshop results.
- Social and marketing work: Use Canva or Adobe Express for repeatable layouts and templates. Use Pixlr or MyEdit for a quick image cleanup when a full design project is unnecessary.
- Mobile capture: Use Photoshop Express for immediate corrections, then move important originals to a desktop workflow when the project needs detailed editing.
How to test a substitute before moving your workflow
- Identify the actual task. Decide whether you need raster compositing, painting, RAW development, vector design, template creation, or a quick enhancement. This usually narrows the list more effectively than comparing feature counts.
- Test your real file types. Open a representative PSD, RAW file, SVG, PNG, or layered project. Do not rely only on a product’s general compatibility statement.
- Inspect editable structure. Check layers, masks, text, paths, adjustment layers, smart objects, blend effects, and transparency. A file that looks correct at first glance may have lost important editability.
- Test the final export. Confirm that the free or free-tier edition can export the dimensions, color mode, format, and quality you need.
- Check the working environment. Browser tools depend on the device and browser. Desktop tools may need more storage or a stronger computer. Mobile tools trade detailed control for convenience.
- Save originals separately. Keep the original photo, RAW file, PSD, or other source document before converting, flattening, or opening it in another application.
- Verify changing limits. Freemium products may restrict AI credits, assets, storage, exports, ads, or advanced features. Confirm those limits immediately before a deadline.
Are these programs really free?
No. The list includes several genuinely free or open-source applications as well as free tiers and limited editions. GIMP, Krita, darktable, RawTherapee, and Inkscape are the clearest open-source choices. Photopea, Pixlr, MyEdit, Canva, and Adobe Express provide browser or platform access with varying free-plan boundaries. Photoshop Express is a simplified mobile option, while PhotoDirector Essential is a free version with paid limitations.
“Free” also says nothing about workflow fit. An open-source RAW developer may be free but unsuitable for a painter; a template platform may be free but unsuitable for layered compositing. Check both the license or plan terms and the tool’s actual role in your workflow.
