On the dated figures, the range is £9.50 to £59 for individual entries and sets, with the Le Creuset pair at £69. A lower price does not establish weaker grinding, and a decorative finish does not establish a better mechanism: the edit is a buying shortlist, not a comparative performance test.
Choose the mechanism before the colour
Salt and pepper are not automatically interchangeable
Cole & Mason’s mechanism guidance distinguishes carbon-steel pepper mechanisms from ceramic mechanisms. Salt should not be put into a carbon-steel mechanism because it can corrode; a ceramic mechanism can generally handle both salt and pepper. Treat that as mechanism-level advice, not permission to swap the contents of every mill. For a dedicated salt mill, use dry, coarse salt intended for grinding. Cole & Mason advises against pre-ground salt, salt flakes and wet salt. For pepper, use whole black peppercorns rather than pre-ground pepper. These ingredients give the grinder material it was designed to crush and reduce the chance of clogging.
Adjustability changes how you cook
A fine-to-coarse dial is useful if one meal needs a delicate seasoning and another needs a more textured grind. Cole & Mason’s 675 specification describes fine-to-coarse adjustment, a carbon-steel pepper mechanism and a ceramic salt mechanism. Lowest-cost colour updates
The £9.50 ProCook Wood mill in Sky Blue is the least expensive entry and gives you a single pastel-toned object to pair with an existing mill. The £15 Dunelm Cole & Mason Kenton is another low-commitment single. Because neither listing in the edit states dimensions, grinder material or adjustment, verify whether you are ordering a salt or pepper version and measure your shelf or tray if space is tight.

For a coordinated pair without moving into design-led pricing, the orange Habitat set at £17 and the red Salter Chester set at £19.99 are the straightforward choices. The source does not establish their grinder construction or refill opening, so use the retailer’s technical section to confirm those details before buying.
Mid-priced decorative pairs and wood
The £36 Anthropologie Catania set uses mango wood, giving it a natural grain rather than a high-gloss coloured coating. The £37.99 &klevering Halma is described as a handmade wooden spice mill; because it is labelled for spices rather than explicitly for both salt and pepper, confirm the permitted contents and mechanism before substituting it for a conventional pair.
At £40, the MADE.COM Bolla grinders are listed as a pair through La Redoute UK. Their appearance may suit a dining table where two matching forms matter more than a bright primary colour, but the edit does not state their dimensions, adjustment range or cleaning method. The Cox & Cox Glossy pair at £45 is the dedicated green option for a shinier finish; check whether the retailer’s current colour name matches the green shown in the edit.

Statement silhouettes
The Addison Ross Cherry Bobbin at £59 is a single mill with a turned, bobbin-like profile. It makes sense when you want one sculptural pepper mill rather than a visually identical pair. The Addison Ross Red Chubbie set at £55 uses a shorter, rounded silhouette and supplies both mills, so it is the more symmetrical choice between the two listings.
The teal Le Creuset Classic set is listed at £69 for two. Le Creuset’s UK pepper-mill information describes an ABS plastic body, an adjustable ceramic grinder, hand-wash care and a 10-year guarantee; confirm that the John Lewis listing is the same Classic model and that those terms apply in the UK. Le Creuset’s Canadian collection shows that colour names and available shades can vary by market, so do not use a Canadian colour list to assume UK stock.
Two listings for the Kenton shape
The Cole & Mason Kenton appears twice: Dunelm at £15 and John Lewis at £18. The names are close but not proof that the retailer listings are identical in finish, size or included mechanism. Compare photographs, dimensions, colour name, delivery terms and warranty wording on the live pages; choose the listing that matches the exact version you want rather than treating the £3 difference as a performance ranking.

Size, refill and cleaning checks
Measure the space and the handhold
Height affects whether a mill fits under an upper cabinet and whether it is comfortable for smaller hands. Peugeot’s UK Bistro range illustrates the spread: listed models include 8–12 cm sizes and displayed prices around £29.99–£31.99 for many variants. Those figures apply to the Bistro models and should not be transferred to the 12 products above. For every shortlisted mill, look for a stated height and base diameter, then check clearance above the storage spot.
Confirm how refilling works
Look for a removable top, a screw or stopper that opens without tools, and a reservoir large enough for your cooking routine. Cole & Mason identifies a Dover stainless-steel funnel as a refill aid; a funnel can reduce spills, but it does not make an incompatible mechanism safe. Keep water away from the mechanism
Cole & Mason recommends wiping the exterior with a damp, colourless cloth, drying it promptly and keeping the mechanism away from water. Do not immerse a mill or rinse its grinder unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Le Creuset’s UK guidance specifies hand washing for the described pepper mill. Warranty and regional details that can change your choice
Warranty terms belong to the exact model, not automatically to a brand’s entire range. Cole & Mason’s 675 page states a lifetime mechanism guarantee and a two-year product warranty for that product. Peugeot states a lifetime guarantee for the Bistro mechanism. Le Creuset’s UK pepper-mill page states a 10-year guarantee for the described model. Colour names, prices and availability can differ between the UK, Canada and other markets.
