What the 12 plans cover
These projects are not twelve versions of the same box. The collection ranges from small, beginner-friendly cases to furniture that changes how a room is used. Some stand on the floor, some attach to a wall, one becomes a chair, and one is designed to be fitted permanently into an opening.

Eric Spencley, cofounder of Spencley Design Co, described bookshelves as “the perfect project for a beginner” because they are essentially multiple boxes in one. That is a useful way to think about the simpler cases, but sculptural, built-in, and fine-furniture versions add layout, joinery, or installation decisions that deserve more experience.
Plan-by-plan guide
Mid-Mod Bookcase
This is the approachable minimalist option: a clean case elevated by splayed legs. The plan includes a build video, three-dimensional diagrams, lumber layouts, and a materials list, so a beginner can see both the sequence and the intended proportions before cutting. Choose it when you want furniture that looks lighter than a rectangular box without committing to complex joinery.
Elephant Bookshelf
The elephant-shaped case is aimed at a child’s room or play space. Exploded views show how the parts relate before assembly, while the materials list keeps the project from becoming a guess-and-check exercise. Trace the silhouette carefully and plan how the finished piece will be anchored if children can pull on it.

Mid-Century Style Floating Shelf
One guide covers four layouts: a 2-foot straight shelf, a 4-foot straight shelf, a 6-foot straight shelf, and a corner shelf. This is the strongest choice when the wall, rather than the floor, determines your design. Measure studs, corners, trim, and door swings before selecting a length; the corner version needs especially accurate wall measurements.
Bookcase Chair
This hybrid combines a seat with shelving around it, making it useful in a reading nook where a separate chair and bookcase would consume more floor area. The listed finished size is 36 inches wide by 36 inches deep by 30 inches tall. Because the seat carries a person’s weight, follow the plan’s structural details exactly and treat it as furniture construction rather than a decorative shelf.
Modular Bookcase
The sharp-angled modular design is rated intermediate to advanced. Its build-video link can help with the order of operations, but the geometry still demands accurate layout and repeatable cuts. Select it if you are comfortable checking angles, dry-fitting modules, and correcting cumulative measurement errors before glue-up.

Tetris Bookcase
Irregular, Tetris-inspired compartments create a display piece for books, art, or collectibles. The instructions are described as straightforward and suitable for beginners, but each unusual shape makes a clean cut and consistent edge treatment more visible. Make a full-size layout on a sheet of cardboard or the floor before committing expensive material.

Freestanding Minimalist Bookcase
This open-backed case uses a no-complex-joinery approach and supplies metric and imperial measurements, step-by-step instructions, diagrams, and a materials list. Its listed dimensions are 78 inches high, 68.5 inches wide, and 16.25 inches deep. Check both ceiling clearance and the route through your doorway; a case this wide may need to be assembled in the room where it will stand.
Configurable Bookshelf
The expandable arrangement can run along a wall, become a compact shelf, or turn into a corner installation. It is presented as beginner-suitable and is particularly useful when a room has an awkward alcove or when you expect to move the unit later. Decide the final arrangement before using the plan’s cut list, because the required lengths change with the dimensions entered.
Tree Bookcase
This wall-mounted shelf forms a tree silhouette and is a visual centerpiece rather than neutral storage. The listed size is 7 feet 6.5 inches tall by 3 feet 7 inches wide. The plan is recommended for intermediate woodworkers. Mark the entire outline on the wall with painter’s tape and confirm that the ceiling, baseboards, outlets, and furniture leave enough clearance before cutting.

Built-In Shelves
The built-in plan is a 69-page package with materials and cutting lists, diagrams, measurements, and installation steps. It is the most site-specific option: walls may be out of square, trim may need to be removed, and the unit must be secured in its final location. A plan seller’s estimate reported by the roundup put wood cost at about $250 per unit; that was the seller’s estimate at the roundup’s September 21, 2026 update, not a current quotation.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
Mid-Century Modern Bookcase
This project is rated intermediate to advanced and requires a number of tools. The full build video is valuable for seeing the sequence, but it does not remove the need for careful layout, edge treatment, and finish preparation. Choose it when you want a period-inspired furniture piece and already have a reliable shop setup.
Simple Bookcase
The basic case is positioned as a quick, affordable beginner project. A full build video demonstrates the process, and the dimensions can be modified. Keep any changes proportional: widening a shelf or increasing its span can require a thicker shelf, a divider, or another form of support to prevent sagging.
Known dimensions and space checks
| Project | Published dimensions | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Bookcase Chair | 36 in W × 36 in D × 30 in H | Seat clearance, passage around the chair, and load-bearing construction |
| Freestanding Minimalist Bookcase | 78 in H × 68.5 in W × 16.25 in D | Ceiling, doorway, stairway, and tipping restraint |
| Tree Bookcase | 7 ft 6.5 in H × 3 ft 7 in W | Wall height, outlets, trim, and mounting points |
| Ana White configurable plan | Configurator range up to 96 in H × 40 in W | Entered dimensions and the resulting custom cut list |
Measure the intended wall or floor area and the complete access route, not just the final location. A shelf that fits beside a sofa may still fail at a stair turn or doorway. For built-ins, measure the opening at several points because walls and floors are rarely perfectly square.

Tools and materials are plan-specific
Do not shop from a universal bookshelf list. The selected plan determines board sizes, back material, fastening method, and the accuracy your tools must deliver.

Example: configurable 1×12 pine plan
Ana White’s configurable 1×12 pine bookshelf uses 1×12 boards, a 1×3 toe kick, 1/4-inch plywood for the back, fasteners, sandpaper, and finish. Its listed tool basics are a measuring tape, square, pencil, safety glasses, drill, circular saw, nailer, and sander. Fastening options include brad nails and glue, self-tapping screws, or pocket-hole screws. Because the online cut list changes with the dimensions entered, generate that list after settling the size.
Example: compact hardwood or plywood case
Bob’s Woodworking Plans describes a 48-inch-high by 24-inch-wide by 12-inch-deep case with four shelves, three of them adjustable. It allows solid hardwood or veneered plywood and uses a 1/4-inch veneered plywood back. The fabrication includes rabbets and a jigsaw cutout, so this is not interchangeable with the simpler pine example.
Example: built-in using pocket holes
A search-result excerpt for a built-in plan lists a circular saw, drill, Pocket-Hole Jig 720, 1×12, 1×2, and 1×3 boards, plywood, hinges, handles, and shelf pins. The excerpt specifies wood glue and 1-1/4-inch pocket-hole screws. Treat this as a plan-specific requirement and verify the complete instructions before buying tools; pocket-hole joinery is not required by every bookshelf design.
Example: plywood weekend case
Popular Woodworking’s “The One-Weekend Bookcase” lists two sides, top and bottom, fixed and adjustable shelves, a back, and French cleats. The article discusses biscuit joinery, with screws or a combination of biscuits and pocket screws as alternatives. Choose the method your plan details and your tools can execute accurately rather than mixing systems mid-build.
A practical weekend workflow
- Choose the location and form. Decide whether the shelf will be freestanding, floating, wall-mounted, or built-in. Record wall width, ceiling height, doorway dimensions, baseboards, outlets, and stud locations.
- Read the complete plan before cutting. Identify the final dimensions, cut list, diagrams, joinery, hardware, finish, and installation steps. Download or print the version you will follow.
- Buy material by actual dimensions. Lumber sold under nominal sizes is smaller after milling. Use the plan’s stated finished dimensions and cut list, not a generic board count.
- Prepare and label every part. Mark face sides, edge orientation, shelf numbers, and left/right pairs. A label prevents mirrored parts and reduces dry-fit confusion.
- Dry-fit the structure. Assemble without glue or permanent fasteners, check diagonals for square, confirm shelf spacing, and test the back or cleats.
- Cut joinery and assemble in the plan’s order. Rabbets, pocket holes, biscuits, screws, and cleats each affect when a part can be installed. Keep glue squeeze-out from drying on visible faces.
- Sand and finish. Sanding, paint, stain, and clear coats add time. Allow the finish to dry as directed before loading books.
- Install and secure the unit. Anchor tall freestanding cases, attach floating or tree shelves to appropriate structural points, and use the built-in plan’s installation sequence for a fitted unit.
How long can a “weekend” build take?
The roundup’s weekend language is editorial guidance, not a tested completion guarantee. Material preparation, tool changes, complex angles, drying periods, and installation can extend the project beyond two days. A compact beginner case with straight cuts is a different time commitment from a built-in or a chair.
Popular Woodworking gives one historical example rather than a benchmark: its author reported starting at 8 a.m. and having the case sanded, assembled, and ready for finishing by 5 p.m. The same article mentioned about $70 in materials in the February 2003 issue, referring to an original article from April 2001. That figure is not a current budget and should not be used to price a 2026 build.
Common failure points and fixes
- The case does not fit the room: Re-measure the opening and access route before cutting. For a built-in, check width at the top, middle, and bottom.
- Shelves sag: Keep spans within the selected plan’s specification or add the support shown by that plan. Do not assume a thicker-looking board has the same stiffness in every material.
- Parts are mirrored or reversed: Label face sides and left/right components immediately after cutting, then dry-fit.
- The back is out of square: Check diagonals before fastening the back or installing cleats. A square back helps hold the entire case square.
- Wall-mounted shelves pull loose: Locate suitable structural attachment points and use the hardware specified for the wall and load. Decorative anchors alone may not support a loaded shelf.
- Finish delays the move-in: Schedule sanding, coats, and curing before the final installation day, especially for a built-in that cannot be moved outdoors easily.
- The plan’s tools are unavailable: Select a different plan or a documented alternative joinery method. Substituting tools without understanding the joint can change strength and alignment.
Which plan should you choose?
- First bookshelf: Start with the Simple Bookcase, Mid-Mod Bookcase, Elephant Bookshelf, or Tetris Bookcase, all presented as beginner-suitable in the roundup.
- Small or awkward wall: Use the configurable bookshelf or the floating-shelf guide, selecting the arrangement after measuring the wall.
- Statement piece: Consider the tree, Tetris, elephant, or angular modular designs after confirming the visual scale and mounting requirements.
- Reading corner: The Bookcase Chair combines seating and storage, but its structural demands exceed those of a decorative shelf.
- Large open storage: The freestanding minimalist case provides substantial width and height; plan the delivery route and anchoring before cutting.
- Permanent storage: Choose built-in shelves only when you are ready for custom measuring, on-site fitting, and installation.
- Fine-furniture challenge: The Mid-Century Modern Bookcase is suited to an experienced builder with the required tools and patience for detailed work.
Pick the plan that matches the room, your tools, and your joinery experience first. Then treat the weekend as a workable target for organized preparation—not as a promise that every design, finish, and installation can be completed in the same number of hours.
