Extra caution for children’s rooms

Do not promise that a loose, long fabric canopy is safe for infants or young children. A 2014 CPSC recall involving an IKEA children’s bed canopy identified a neck-entanglement and strangulation hazard; the notice covered approximately 255,000 units sold in the United States, 7,000 in Canada and 2.6 million worldwide. A separate 2016 CPSC recall described an entanglement report involving another children’s bed canopy. These were product-specific recalls, but they show why age guidance and current warnings matter.

• Follow the current age range and warning label for any purchased canopy, light or hardware.
• Keep long, loose fabric, cords and loops away from a child’s neck and crib or toddler-bed area.
• Use a child’s room canopy only where an adult can inspect it regularly and remove it immediately if a fastener loosens, fabric tears or a child can pull it down.
• Do not place decorative lights within a child’s reach or allow wiring to run under the mattress.

Coordinate the canopy with painted walls
