Finland’s latest design discoveries stretch far beyond sellable objects. A 28 September 2026 feature in Wallpaper*, drawing on Helsinki Design Week and Habitare, presents twelve projects spanning custom timber houses, a temporary museum, a historic hotel, a private villa, rugs, exhibition architecture, acoustic panels, a carbon-material claim and Finnish-made furniture. Together they show how Finnish practice is addressing comfort, reuse, local material streams, cultural memory and new forms of craft.
The list below preserves that breadth. Some entries are places or events rather than products, and several figures are estimates or claims reported by the feature rather than independently audited measurements.

Buildings and cultural places
1. Kainuu’s cross-laminated-timber summer houses
Architect Pekka Airaxin launched a company offering bespoke, turnkey summer houses in cross-laminated timber (CLT). The proposition combines the simplicity of a delivered package with the individuality of a custom building: buyers commission a complete house rather than selecting a standard retail cabin.
Material provenance is central to the story. The feature reports that the timber comes from managed forests within 80 km of the processing factory. That radius describes the company’s reported sourcing practice, not a universal Finnish standard for CLT. Wallpaper* also reported ten houses delivered and 20 in the pipeline in 2026; those are activity figures attributed to the feature, not an independently audited order book.

For a reader, Kainuu belongs in the “major commitment” category. It involves site work, planning, transport, approvals and a long-term building decision. The article does not provide prices, floor plans, energy figures, delivery territories or certification details, so those must be obtained directly before commissioning.
2. The temporary Architecture & Design Museum space
JKMM had won the contract for Helsinki’s new Architecture & Design Museum, scheduled to open in 2030. While that permanent institution is being developed, Studio Joanna Laajisto designed a temporary event and gathering space overlooking the construction site. The interim venue makes the future museum visible without waiting for the finished building.
Reuse governs the interior. Laajisto estimates that 99% of the project’s contents were reused, with paint and picture frames identified as exceptions. This is her estimate as reported by Wallpaper*, not a certified material audit. Her accompanying argument is that construction must “unlearn and relearn” old habits, a point that gives the temporary project an experimental role rather than treating it as disposable event décor.
The project is useful as a practical model for temporary interiors: start with what already exists, design around available elements and reserve new purchases for items that cannot reasonably be reused. The venue’s event schedule and access conditions are separate operational questions and may change.
3. Juhani Pallasmaa’s library
Architect Juhani Pallasmaa bequeathed his 10,000-book collection to the museum. The temporary space reportedly places 10% of those books on view for reading and reference, turning a personal working library into a shared cultural resource while the permanent museum is under construction.

The display also extends Pallasmaa’s long interest in sensory experience. His 1996 book The Eyes of the Skin argues for architecture understood through the whole body rather than sight alone. In the temporary library, the idea becomes spatial and practical: books are not merely exhibited as archival objects but made available for use, conversation and concentration. The feature does not state lending rules, opening hours or whether the remaining books are accessible elsewhere.

Hotel Kämp was built in 1887, and the feature describes a refurbishment and expansion intended to carry that historic hotel into contemporary use. Helsinki-based Fyra designed all the bedrooms. Wallpaper*’s writer highlights comfort, lighting, durability and material choices as strengths of the scheme.
This is a hospitality project rather than a museum-like preservation exercise. Bedroom design has to withstand frequent use, housekeeping and changing guests while still feeling appropriate to a landmark building. The source supplies no room rates, completion date, room count or booking information, so the design account should not be read as a statement about current availability.
5. Villa Weckström
EMMA opened Björn Weckström’s villa on the shoreline of the Espoo archipelago for guided tours by appointment in summer 2026. The setting functions as part retrospective and part view into Weckström’s work as a jeweller, sculptor and mixed-media artist. His domestic environment therefore becomes part of the interpretation: architecture, objects, landscape and biography are encountered together.
Tour access is time-sensitive. Appointment requirements, dates and capacity can change, so visitors should confirm the current arrangement with EMMA before making a journey. The feature does not establish a permanent public opening schedule.

Textiles, furniture and the living surface
6. Ervin Latimer’s three rugs with Finarte
Designer Ervin Latimer, known for Latimmier, collaborated with Finarte on three sculptural rugs. They combine hand-knotting and hand-tufting, making the surface itself part of the object’s form rather than a neutral floor covering.
Latimer describes the collection through an Afro-Nordic heritage, connecting textile traditions from the Siikajoki Valley in Finland with regions of West and West Central Africa. His explanation treats textiles as carriers of memory: patterns matter, but so do fibres, techniques and the ways a piece is used. That framing avoids reducing the collaboration to a decorative “Nordic” look and acknowledges a deliberately cross-cultural design vocabulary.
The feature does not give dimensions, prices, production quantities, stock status or shipping information. Those details, along with care requirements, need confirmation if you are considering a rug rather than viewing the project as an exhibition example.
7. Habitare as a design fair
Habitare is one of the roundup’s subjects in its own right. The feature praises the fair’s curation for bringing material development and craft to both commercial and cultural audiences. That is an editorial assessment, not an independently measured success ranking.
Its importance in this list is connective. A fair can place a material experiment beside a sellable object, an emerging designer beside an established manufacturer and a cultural project beside a practical interior application. Readers should therefore approach Habitare as a field of encounters rather than a single product line or design award.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
8. Minestrone Workshop’s reusable pavilion
Minestrone Workshop, a Helsinki collective of nine designers, created a pavilion with a reusable frame and a cladding layer of 2 mm wood veneer. The reported volume is striking: 566 cubic metres of space made using wood from three tree trunks. Prototype furniture and lighting occupied the interior, turning the structure into both an exhibition and a full-scale test bed.
The pavilion demonstrates a different approach to temporary architecture from a one-off scenic installation. A frame designed for reuse can outlast a particular fair, while thin veneer allows a large visual surface without implying a solid mass of timber. The source does not state how many times the frame will be reused, where it will go next or what dismantling and transport involve.
9. Habitare New Talents
The New Talents presentation introduces emerging practices rather than a single finished collection. The feature names Waltter Mahlberg, Iina Kettunen and Carlo Raymann among the four talents presented. It does not name the fourth talent in the reported text, so these three should not be presented as the complete cohort.

Mahlberg is associated with wooden forms. Kettunen’s works are carved and burnt with a chainsaw, leaving tool marks and altered timber as part of the visual language. Raymann makes fish-like folk objects, linking functional or sculptural design to vernacular imagery. Together, the examples show how “new talent” can mean a material attitude or process as much as a market-ready product.
10. Tyyne woven acoustic panels
Interior architecture studio Sistem and circular-economy company Niimaar collaborated on Tyyne, acoustic panels woven from oak offcuts generated by Finnish Swan sailboat manufacture. Weaving takes place in Salo. The panels’ visible material story is therefore tied to an existing industrial stream rather than to newly milled decorative stock.

- Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.
Aisti Oy’s wood-fibre panels provide the acoustic component, according to the feature. A birch version is available, as is an option without acoustic filling. Those are reported product configurations, not independent laboratory results; check current specifications, fire classifications, absorption values, dimensions and installation requirements before using Tyyne in a project.
11. Tebian furniture
Teppo Lakaniemi founded Finnish furniture brand Tebian in 2011. The company has a Helsinki studio and showroom, and its furniture is manufactured in Finland. The feature praises the forms and materials but does not identify model names, prices, stock levels or delivery territories.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTebian is the most immediately movable entry in the roundup, yet it still sits within a local-production story: a Helsinki design presence paired with manufacturing in Finland. To compare a piece fairly with imported furniture, ask about timber species, finishes, repairability, lead times and replacement parts; none of those specifications is established by the feature.

12. Elementic’s MO6 lignin tile
Finnish material-technology firm Elementic presented MO6, a tile made from lignin. Lignin is described as a forestry-industry by-product that is usually burned. Recasting that stream as a building material gives the project a clear circular-economy proposition.
Elementic describes the tile as lightweight, resistant and durable. The company also claims that MO6 stores twice the carbon of wood and is the world’s most carbon-negative building material. Those are company claims relayed by Wallpaper*; they are not independently established performance facts here. A responsible specification would require the underlying system boundary, carbon-accounting method, comparison basis, product declaration and test data.
How the projects compare
| Pair | Useful distinction | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Kainuu houses vs Tebian furniture | Custom, site-specific buildings versus movable furnishings | Prices, delivery geography and current availability for both |
| Tyyne vs MO6 | Interior acoustic panels made with oak offcuts versus a lignin-based tile with carbon-performance claims | Independent comparative testing and complete technical certifications |
| Latimer x Finarte rugs vs Tebian | Handmade textile surfaces carrying cultural references versus furniture forms and materials | Current stock, dimensions and prices |
| Temporary museum space vs Minestrone pavilion | Reuse-led event interior versus a reusable structural frame and veneer enclosure | Future reuse cycles, logistics and whole-life impacts |
What makes this Finnish design roundup distinctive
- It treats design as a habitat. Houses, a hotel, a villa, a museum venue and a fair show how design shapes where people live, gather, learn and travel.
- Reuse is practical rather than symbolic. The temporary museum space, Minestrone pavilion and Tyyne panels each begin with an existing resource: contents, a reusable frame or industrial offcuts.
- Craft carries history. Pallasmaa’s working library, Latimer’s Afro-Nordic textile references and Raymann’s fish-like folk objects connect contemporary work to memory and tradition.
- Material claims need proportion. The 99% reuse estimate, pavilion measurements, house counts and MO6 carbon statements are reported figures or attributed claims. They should not be generalized into industry-wide proof.
- The scale is intentionally mixed. A custom house and a small rug answer different needs. The value of the roundup lies in seeing them as parts of one design culture, not in ranking them as interchangeable purchases.
Before visiting, specifying or buying
- Confirm access. Check EMMA for current Villa Weckström appointment rules and verify any temporary museum or Habitare programming before travelling.
- Request live specifications. For Tyyne or MO6, obtain dimensions, acoustic or structural data, fire performance, maintenance guidance and environmental documentation from the maker.
- Separate reported figures from guarantees. Treat Kainuu’s delivery and pipeline numbers, the museum’s 99% estimate, Minestrone’s material totals and Elementic’s carbon comparison as statements attributed to the named source.
- Match the project to your scale. A Kainuu house requires site planning and a major budget; a rug, panel or furniture piece can be evaluated through sample, fit, care and lead time.
- Ask about afterlife. For reused frames, woven panels, furniture and tiles, ask how components can be repaired, removed, reused or recycled at the end of their first application.
These twelve discoveries are most persuasive when read as a network: local timber and industrial by-products, temporary structures designed for another life, cultural spaces that make archives usable, and objects whose forms carry personal or collective memory. Finland’s uplifting design story is therefore less about a single aesthetic than about designing relationships between material, place, people and time.
