Better Homes & Gardens’ collection offers 12 free pumpkin-carving templates to download, from mythological figures such as Medusa, the griffin, dragon and phoenix to Halloween staples including a zombie, ghost, witch and vampire. The designs vary in difficulty: the griffin is identified as a good choice for a first-time carver, while the dragon and phoenix call for more detailed work.

Which template should you choose?
For a first pumpkin-carving project: griffin
Better Homes & Gardens describes the griffin as a good design for a first-time carver, despite some detail in its claws and fur. It gives beginners a more characterful pattern without being presented as one of the collection’s most intricate projects.
For a dramatic silhouette: dragon
The dragon has a spiky outline, with a head, stomach and wings to shape. Better Homes & Gardens suggests placing a candle so the dragon’s mouth appears to glow, and adding details such as a scaly stomach and wings. Those additions make it a more involved choice than the griffin.
For layered carving: phoenix
The phoenix combines carved sections with feathered wings made by scraping the pumpkin’s surface. The source recommends an extra-wide pumpkin for carving its glowing body, so choose a broad pumpkin if you want to follow that design as described.
For a simple face-focused display: glowing eyes
The glowing-eyes template emphasizes the eyes rather than a full creature outline. Better Homes & Gardens suggests faux flickering candles for these pumpkins to avoid a fire hazard.
How to use a downloadable pumpkin template
- Choose a design. Open the collection, compare the template descriptions, and select a pattern suited to your carving experience and pumpkin shape.
- Open its download link. Use the link provided with that design on the Better Homes & Gardens page. The source links to downloadable templates; this article does not verify individual file formats or downloads.
- Prepare the pumpkin and pattern. Follow the downloaded template’s own instructions for sizing and positioning. The source does not specify a universal transfer method or tool list.
- Carve according to the design. Keep the pattern’s distinction between cut-through areas and surface-scraped details in mind, especially for the phoenix’s feathered wings.
- Choose a display light. For the glowing-eyes design, the source recommends faux flickering candles as an alternative intended to avoid a fire hazard.
