Glue can rescue small household breaks, loose trim and separated surfaces—but only when the adhesive matches both materials and the job. A paper tear, a ceramic ornament and a flexible rubber foot do not need the same formula. The U.S. government’s Consumer Information Series 3: Adhesives for Everyday Use states: “The end use of the article must be considered.” That means choosing for the load, movement, moisture, heat, appearance and cleanup the repaired item will encounter.
The twelve repairs below are deliberately limited to small, non-structural jobs. Check the exact package directions before applying anything: product formulas differ, and a material listed as suitable by one manufacturer may be excluded by another.

Household adhesive is a family of products, not a universal repair substance. A liquid adhesive may wet porous wood or paper effectively; a gel may stay where you put it on a vertical surface; a flexible formula may survive movement that would crack a rigid bond. Strength, flexibility, setting and adjustment time, cleanup, bond color and resistance to water or heat all vary.
Glue is appropriate when the separated pieces still fit closely and the repaired item will see modest loads. It is not a substitute for a screw, stitch, clamp, replacement part or professional repair when a failure could cause injury, contamination or significant property damage.

Choose the adhesive by material and use
| Decision | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Substrate compatibility | Read the label for both surfaces, including plastic type where stated. | Adhesives are formulation-specific. Loctite Super Glue Gel Control, for example, lists leather, cork, paper, cardboard, wood, chipboard, fabric, metal, ceramic, rubber and certain hard plastics, but excludes polyethylene, polypropylene, silicone rubber, glass, glazed surfaces and several other materials. |
| Expected load | Decide whether the repair is decorative, lightly handled or heavily used. | The government consumer guide distinguishes a heavily used tool, toy or furniture part from a cup or fragile picture frame that may need only moderate strength and easy cleanup. |
| Movement | Ask whether the joint will flex, twist or vibrate. | A rigid bond can fail on a high-flexibility joint. Loctite’s stated exclusions include high-flexibility situations. |
| Setting and adjustment | Look for the product’s open, adjustment and handling directions. | Some formulas grab quickly; others allow repositioning. Never assume one adhesive’s timing applies to another. |
| Appearance and cleanup | Check whether the cured line is clear, colored or likely to show. | Natural or stained wood may need a colorless or matching adhesive. A transparent bond is desirable for some glass repairs. |
| Exposure | Check water, dishwasher, oven, microwave, sunlight and temperature limits. | Loctite Gel Control is not recommended for dishwasher, oven or microwave use. A label’s household-use list is not approval for food contact or heat exposure. |
UHU All Purpose Adhesive lists wood, some plastics, metal, glass, porcelain, ceramic, leather, rubber, felt, cork, fabrics, cardboard and paper. Its directions require clean, dry surfaces free of dust and grease. The same product page warns that the adhesive contains volatile, highly flammable solvents, so follow its ventilation, ignition-source and storage precautions. Do not use that material list to override another glue’s exclusions.
Loctite’s consumer guidance describes liquid super glue as suited to smooth, close-fitting surfaces and gel as useful on non-horizontal surfaces because it does not drip or run. Treat that as guidance for the named products, not a rule for every gel or liquid adhesive.
Prepare the repair before opening the tube
- Identify both materials. Paint, glaze, finish and a plastic’s resin can change the bond even when the underlying material appears familiar.
- Assess the end use. Remove any plan involving food contact, drinking vessels, oven or microwave use, dishwasher cleaning, safety equipment, load-bearing furniture or a child’s safety-critical toy unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that use.
- Dry-fit the pieces. Confirm they meet without force and mark their alignment. Adhesive cannot fill a missing chunk reliably unless the product is specifically designed as a gap-filler.
- Clean and dry. Remove dust, grease and loose fibers. Let solvent-cleaned surfaces dry completely, and test any cleaner on an inconspicuous area first.
- Protect the workspace. Use a disposable surface, keep fingers away from the bond line and provide the ventilation required by the label. Keep solvent-containing products away from flames, sparks and heat.
- Apply sparingly and hold as directed. Excess glue can lengthen cleanup, create a visible ridge or weaken some joints. Use the package’s clamp, hold and full-cure instructions rather than guessing.
12 problems you can fix with just glue
1. A small wooden trim piece has come loose
Suitable materials: bare or finished wood joined to wood, when the selected adhesive lists both surfaces.
Remove dust and old, powdery adhesive, then dry-fit the trim so its edges meet. Apply a thin, even film, press the piece into its original position and secure it exactly as the label directs. Wipe squeeze-out before it hardens, taking care not to spread it across a stained finish. If the trim is repeatedly hit, supports weight or is part of a stair, railing or structural assembly, use a mechanical repair instead of relying on glue alone.
2. A paper or cardboard cover is torn
Suitable materials: paper-to-paper or cardboard-to-cardboard for a light-duty object.
Flatten the tear, align the printed surface and apply the smallest practical amount along the seam. A transparent or low-visibility bond is preferable where the repair will be seen. Hold the layers flat while they set, then keep the item dry and flex it as little as possible. Do not use this method for archival documents, certificates or anything whose value could be damaged by adhesive staining; consult a conservation professional for those.

3. A leather tab or strap end has separated
Suitable materials: leather-to-leather, only when the label permits the leather type and intended flexibility.
Trim loose fibers, clean both faces without saturating the leather and test the adhesive on a hidden area for darkening. Align the tab under its normal tension, apply a controlled film and hold it flat. A rigid super-glue bond may crack where a strap bends, so reject the repair if the joint must flex repeatedly or carry a person’s weight. Stitching or replacement is safer for handles, harnesses and load-bearing footwear components.
4. A fabric hem or felt edge is lifting
Suitable materials: fabric-to-fabric or fabric-to-felt when the adhesive’s directions include those textiles.
Brush away lint, keep the cloth smooth and apply adhesive only to the hidden overlap. Press from the center outward to avoid a hard ridge. Check the label for washability and flexibility before treating clothing, upholstery or anything that will be laundered. If the fabric is valuable, test for discoloration and stiffness first; glue can leave a permanent, shiny patch even when the seam holds.

Suitable materials: metal joined to a compatible backing such as wood, ceramic, leather or another metal.
Degrease both surfaces, roughen neither unless the product specifically allows it, and let them dry. Position the badge once because repositioning becomes difficult after contact. Keep the item supported while the adhesive sets, and remove squeeze-out before it reaches a visible face. Do not glue a handle, hinge, ladder fitting or other part that transmits substantial force; a fastener designed for that load is the appropriate repair.

6. A small ceramic ornament has broken
Suitable materials: unglazed or glazed ceramic only if the chosen adhesive lists that exact surface.
Dry-fit the fragments and mark the order of assembly. Apply a fine line to one clean, dry edge, join without sliding and support the pieces until the product’s handling time has elapsed. Keep the repaired ornament decorative and away from food, boiling water, ovens, microwaves and dishwashers unless the adhesive expressly approves those conditions. Discard pieces with sharp, unstable cracks or use professional ceramic restoration for valuable objects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. A rubber bumper has fallen off a cabinet or appliance
Suitable materials: rubber-to-painted metal, plastic or wood only where both substrates are listed.
Remove old residue and oils, then let the rubber and receiving surface dry completely. A gel can help on a vertical face because it is less likely to run, but verify the product’s compatibility first. Press the bumper in its original location and keep the door or surface from rubbing it while it sets. Do not use adhesive to repair a pressure seal, gas or water fitting, or any rubber part whose failure could create a hazard.
8. A cork pad has separated from a backing
Suitable materials: cork-to-wood, paper, cardboard or another listed backing.
Brush off crumbs and align the pad before applying a thin coat. Weight the assembly with a flat, protected object while it sets so the cork does not curl. Use the repaired pad for light, dry-duty applications unless the label confirms resistance to heat or moisture. A glued cork coaster is not automatically safe for hot pans, dishwashers or food-contact surfaces.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
9. A chipboard or veneer edge is lifting
Suitable materials: chipboard, wood or veneer only when the adhesive lists the combination.
Press the lifted edge flat and remove dust from the gap. Apply a narrow bead, protect the finished face with release paper, and clamp or weight the edge evenly. Clean any squeeze-out before it cures, since sanding can damage a thin veneer. If the board is swollen from water or the edge is part of a load-bearing shelf, replace the damaged section rather than hiding a structural failure with glue.
10. A small hard-plastic part has snapped
Suitable materials: only the plastic named by the adhesive directions; do not guess from appearance.
Check the part for a resin marking or manufacturer information, clean and dry the mating faces, and test-fit them. Apply the recommended amount and keep the joint aligned until handling is allowed. Loctite Gel Control specifically excludes polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), silicone rubber, PTFE and other listed materials, so it is not a universal plastic repair. Avoid glued repairs on clips, child-safety latches, electrical insulation or parts exposed to repeated flexing.
11. A lightweight picture-frame corner has opened
Suitable materials: wood, paperboard or other frame materials named on the product label.
Square the corner on a flat surface, remove loose dust and apply adhesive inside the joint rather than across the visible face. Use a strap, corner clamp or gentle tape only if it will not mark the finish. The government consumer guide identifies fragile picture frames as an example where moderate strength and easy cleanup may matter more than maximum strength. Do not glue a frame that supports heavy glass overhead without a sound mechanical joint.

12. A small glass decorative piece has separated from its mount
Suitable materials: glass-to-wood, metal or another listed substrate, using a product whose directions specifically include glass.
Use the manufacturer’s cleaning method, since fingerprints and grease can defeat a transparent bond. Apply a minimal amount, align carefully and protect the glass from lateral knocks while it sets. Loctite Gel Control’s listed exclusions include glass and glazed surfaces, while UHU All Purpose Adhesive lists glass among its suitable materials; that difference shows why the exact formulation matters. Never treat a glued glass handle, drinking vessel, aquarium component or heat-exposed panel as safe without explicit approval.

When glue is the wrong repair
- Food or drink contact: A household adhesive list does not establish food-contact safety.
- Heat or appliances: Dishwasher, oven and microwave exposure requires explicit product approval; Loctite Gel Control is not recommended for those uses.
- Structural or load-bearing parts: Furniture joints, tools, ladders, handles, child-safety hardware and protective equipment need a mechanically appropriate repair.
- Large gaps or missing material: Choose a filler, replacement piece or reconstruction method designed for the gap.
- Flexible, wet or constantly moving joints: Use a product rated for that environment or choose stitching, fasteners or replacement.
- Unknown plastics or coated surfaces: Identify the substrate before applying adhesive; compatibility cannot be inferred from color or hardness.
Troubleshoot a failed bond
The pieces never grabbed
Likely causes are grease, moisture, dust, an incompatible substrate or too little contact. Separate the parts only if doing so will not damage them, remove residue using a label-approved method, let both surfaces dry and recheck compatibility. Do not simply add more glue over a contaminated joint.
The bond is visible or cloudy
Excess adhesive, movement during setting or a formula that dries with a different appearance can leave a ridge or haze. Scraping or solvent removal may damage paint, stain, plastic or glaze. Test any cleanup method in a hidden spot and accept that a cosmetic replacement may be better than aggressive removal.
The joint holds briefly, then breaks
Compare the actual use with the product’s limits. Repeated flexing, peel forces, water, heat and impact can exceed a bond intended for a static decorative repair. Change the repair method—not just the adhesive quantity—when the end use demands a fastener, stitch, clamp or replacement part.
The adhesive will not dispense or has cured in the nozzle
Do not force a blocked container toward your face or cut it with a knife. Follow the package storage and nozzle-cleaning directions, keep the cap closed between uses and replace contaminated or partially cured product when the manufacturer says it is no longer usable.
A safe decision in one minute
- Name the two materials and verify both on the adhesive label.
- Describe the repaired item’s load, movement, water and heat exposure.
- Reject the glue repair if the item is structural, food-contact, safety-critical or repeatedly flexed without an approved flexible formula.
- Clean, dry, align and test-fit the pieces.
- Apply a small amount, ventilate as directed, hold or clamp for the stated time and wait for full cure before normal use.
These checks turn “just glue” from a guess into a controlled repair. The best result is not the strongest product in the drawer; it is the adhesive whose documented compatibility and limits match the object’s real job.
