Old pillowcases can become washable covers, children’s clothing, bags, storage, cleaning cloths and protective packing. The best project depends on three things: how sound the fabric is, how much sewing you want to do, and how the finished item will be washed or used.

Choose a project before you cut
A pillowcase already has finished edges and a useful tube or envelope shape, so some ideas need little more than folding and tying. Others require cutting, seam finishing, elastic, cord or handles. Use the chart as a quick match, then read the project notes for construction and care details.
| Project | Sewing effort | Best fabric condition | Additional materials |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dog-bed cover or filled bed | Low to moderate | Sound, washable fabric | Existing bed or clean fill; optional zipper, buttons or ties |
| Child’s dress | Moderate | Sound, soft fabric | Thread, measuring tape and edge-finishing supplies |
| Child’s skirt | Low to moderate | Sound fabric | Elastic, thread and measuring tape |
| Floor cushion | Moderate | Sound fabric; several matching cases help | Pillows for filling and thread |
| Apron | Low to moderate | Sound fabric | Ties and optional pocket fabric |
| Drawstring laundry bag | None to moderate | Intact fabric; robust cloth for repeated washing | Ribbon or cord, safety pin and optionally a sewing machine |
| Duster or cleaning rags | None | Worn but intact fabric | Fabric scissors if cutting rags |
| Sheet-set storage | None | Any clean, intact case | Matching sheet set |
| Reusable shopping bag | Low to moderate | Strong, intact fabric | Thread, scissors and handles or fabric strips |
| Book tote | Moderate | Strong fabric | Handles, thread and edge-finishing supplies |
| Chair cover | None to low | Clean, attractive fabric | Tie or ribbon if the fit needs securing |
| Packing material | None | Threadbare but clean fabric | Tape or a box, if needed |
Fiber type changes how a project behaves. Cotton, linen, synthetics and blends tolerate different temperatures, tension and pressing, so follow the sewn-in care label rather than assuming every case can be bleached, tumble-dried or washed hot.
The 12 upcycling projects
1. Make a removable dog-bed cover
Slide the pillowcase over an existing dog bed and treat its opening as the access point for washing. Check that the case is wide and long enough to cover the cushion without straining the seams. If the opening is loose, add ties, buttons or another closure that can withstand the dog’s movement while still allowing removal for laundering.
You can also turn the case into a simple bed by filling it with clean pillows or other suitable, washable filling. Distribute the fill evenly, test the loft and close the opening securely so stuffing cannot escape. A removable outer cover is easier to keep clean than a permanently closed cushion.
2. Turn the case into a child’s dress
The existing pillowcase shape provides a beginner-friendly starting point for a child’s dress, and a printed case can supply much of the visual design. Measure the child before cutting: check the desired length, chest room and shoulder or arm openings against the child’s body or a well-fitting garment.

Mark openings conservatively, cut only after confirming the placement, and finish every newly exposed edge so it does not rub or unravel. The original finished edge can become a hem, reducing work. Let the child try the garment on over clothing before making final adjustments; fit varies with the case’s dimensions and the child’s proportions.
3. Sew a child’s skirt
Use the pillowcase’s finished edge as the skirt hem. Measure the child’s waist and the intended length, allowing room for an elastic casing at the top. Cut from the open end, fold and stitch a casing wide enough for the chosen elastic, then thread the elastic through and join its ends securely.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the waistband’s stretch and the skirt’s length before closing the casing. The finished edge saves a hemming step, but it does not guarantee the correct fit; confirm measurements before cutting.
4. Join cases into a floor cushion
For a larger floor cushion, sew several pillowcases together along a long edge, creating one broad cover. Insert pillows as filling to make a floor chair, lounging spot or low cushion. Arrange the pillows before closing the final opening so the cushion is full without putting excessive strain on the seams.
Use cases with similar fabric weight when possible. Reinforce joins that will bear someone’s weight, and make the cover removable if you expect to wash it often.

5. Create an apron
Treat the pillowcase as a fabric panel for an apron. Decide whether you want a bib, waist apron or a simple protective front, then mark the shape while keeping as much of the original finished edge as possible. Add ties at the waist and, if useful, a pocket made from complementary fabric or a cut-down section of another case.

Finish cut edges and check that ties are long enough to knot comfortably without dragging on the floor. For cooking, verify that the fabric’s care label supports the washing routine the apron will need.
6. Make a drawstring laundry bag
There are two useful approaches.
No-sew ribbon method
- Wash and dry the case.
- Make small openings in the existing top seam, leaving the seam itself intact.
- Attach ribbon to a safety pin and guide it through the opening and around the casing.
- Tie the ribbon ends together, then test the opening and closure with a light load.
This method comes from a Girl Guides of Canada activity and avoids a sewing machine. Keep the openings small and inspect them periodically for stretching.
Sewn drawstring method
For a bag that will be washed repeatedly, a sewn casing and reinforced seams are more suitable. The ITV This Morning tutorial recommends machine sewing to make seams strong and reduce fraying or loosening; it specifically guides readers toward 100% cotton for repeated high-temperature washing. Treat that as the tutorial’s project advice, not a universal requirement, and follow your own fabric label.
- Fold and stitch a top casing wide enough for the cord or ribbon.
- Finish raw side and bottom edges to control fraying.
- Sew the sides and bottom, backstitching at stress points.
- Thread the drawstrings with a safety pin and knot or stitch their ends.
7. Use it as a duster or cut cleaning rags
For a fast, no-sew reuse, slide the pillowcase over a ceiling-fan blade, keeping your hand on the outside of the case as you pull it along. The fabric traps dust before you remove the case for laundering. Turn off power to the fan and use a stable step only if necessary.

Alternatively, cut the case into smaller cleaning cloths. Keep the pieces large enough to hold comfortably, and reserve lint-prone fabric for jobs where loose fibers will not matter. Wash cleaning cloths separately from food-use textiles.
8. Keep a sheet set together
Fold a matching fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillowcases, then place the complete set inside one retired pillowcase. The outer case acts as a labeled bundle in the linen closet, preventing individual pieces from migrating between shelves. This is a zero-sew project, so it works even when the fabric is attractive but not suitable for cutting.
9. Sew a reusable shopping bag
A pillowcase can become a carry bag through a simple low-sewing adaptation or a more structured sewn construction. In either approach, decide the finished depth and handle length before cutting. The ITV example finishes seams, sews the sides and bottom and adds formed drawstrings or handles; a basic version can retain more of the original tube and require fewer new seams.
Test the bag with a light load first. If it will carry cans, books or other heavy items, reinforce the handle attachment and bottom corners. For grocery use, read the safety guidance below before choosing what the bag carries.
10. Build a book tote
Shorten the pillowcase to the depth you want, finish the new top edge and attach two handles. Place handles symmetrically, stitch them through several layers and reinforce the attachment points. The case’s original side seams can save work, but the shortened edge must be finished so it does not unravel.

Try the tote with the heaviest book you expect to carry. A decorative case may be ideal for a light library load but unsuitable for heavy textbooks unless the seams and handles are strengthened.
11. Cover a dining-chair back
Slip the pillowcase over a dining-chair back as an instant decorative cover. Chair shapes vary, so treat this as an adaptable idea rather than a guaranteed fit. If the cover shifts, tie it behind the chair with ribbon or fabric strips; keep the tie short enough that it cannot become a snagging hazard.
Check that the case does not interfere with the chair’s legs, hinges or safe use. Remove it for washing according to the fabric label.

When a pillowcase is too worn for a bag or garment but remains clean, use it to wrap dishes, ornaments or keepsakes during storage or a move. Wrap each item fully, cushion empty spaces in the box and keep fragile pieces from touching. This extends the fabric’s usefulness without asking weak fibers to support a load.

Wash, dry and inspect first
The Girl Guides of Canada activity recommends washing and drying a pillowcase before conversion. Cleaning first removes body oils and dust that could become trapped in seams or transferred to a child’s clothing, pet bed or grocery bag. After drying, inspect for thinning, stains, mildew, loose threads and weakened corners. Mark or cut around defects instead of hiding them inside a finished item.
Preserve sentimental textiles
A vintage, embroidered or inherited case may be more valuable intact than transformed. The Canadian Conservation Institute advises clean, dry storage in a cool, dark, dry place with good ventilation. Its textile guidance states: “All fibres have different chemical and physical characteristics that affect how they hold up over time.” It also warns, “Light intensity and the length of exposure to light can cause cumulative and irreversible damage.” If the case is cherished, store it rather than cutting it, or use it in a reversible cover project.
Care rules for bags and household uses
Grocery safety
Health Canada’s reusable-bag guidance, dated January 9, 2013, recommends separating bags used for produce from those used for raw meat, poultry and seafood. Wash cloth bags frequently, dry them completely and wash them before grocery use if they have carried non-food items. Apply that advice to a pillowcase bag only after confirming that the fabric and any added trim can tolerate the required cleaning.
Prevent fraying and weak seams
- Finish newly cut edges with a suitable seam treatment or binding.
- Backstitch at handle ends, casing openings and bottom corners.
- Use a machine when repeated washing or heavy loads demand stronger, more consistent seams; hand sewing remains adequate for light-duty projects.
- Stop using a bag when holes, stretched openings or loose handles appear.
A practical decision checklist
- Sound and attractive: choose the dress, skirt, cushion, apron, chair cover or book tote.
- Strong and washable: choose a dog-bed cover, laundry bag or shopping bag, after checking the care label.
- Worn but intact: choose dusting cloths, rags or packing material.
- No sewing equipment: choose sheet-set storage, a chair cover, dusting, packing or the ribbon laundry-bag method.
- Machine available: use it for reinforced handles, closed cushions and frequently washed bags.
- Sentimental fabric: preserve it clean, dry and out of strong light instead of cutting it.
These choices turn one retired household textile into a useful item without assuming that every pillowcase has the same strength, fiber content or fit. Let the fabric’s condition and the finished item’s cleaning demands determine how ambitious the project should be.
