Broken plates, cups and saucers become useful mosaic pieces—called tesserae—when you sort them, arrange them on a sound base, glue them with a substrate-appropriate adhesive and grout the gaps. The twelve projects below range from a beginner planter or coaster to outdoor garden art and an advanced drilled-shard pendant.

Why broken china works for mosaic crafts
China already offers the qualities mosaics need: hard surfaces, contrasting colors, printed motifs and pieces that can be arranged like a small palette. Cornell Garden-Based Learning specifically recommends reusing china and pottery where possible. Educational material from the J. Paul Getty Museum describes the broader idea as changing the use of porcelain and other utilitarian objects rather than discarding them.
A shard can remain recognizable—a flower from a teacup, a blue border from a plate—or become one shape in a larger pattern. The same method can decorate a small indoor object or a large garden surface, but the base, adhesive and grout must match the conditions.
What you need before starting
Core materials
- Clean broken china and pottery, sorted by color, motif and thickness.
- A rigid base such as a terra-cotta planter, cork saucer, picture frame, concrete paver, bench panel or other suitable surface.
- Adhesive selected for the substrate and whether the project is indoors or outdoors.
- Grout; outdoor work requires water- and frost-resistant cement and grout.
- Mosaic glass nippers for controlled trimming when a piece must be reduced. Cornell lists nippers, and WheatonArts lists a glass nipper tool for its coaster project.
- A spreader or disposable tool for adhesive and grout, plus containers and cloths for cleanup.
Safety equipment
- Safety glasses or goggles to protect against flying chips.
- Protective or rubber gloves when sorting, trimming and grouting.
- A dust mask when dry dust may be created, especially during cutting or cleanup.
- A stable, contained work area so loose shards cannot scatter into walkways, food-preparation areas or places where children and pets can reach them.
Cornell and WheatonArts both include protective eyewear in their project guidance. Fine Gardening also describes safety glasses and gloves while making garden mosaics. These measures reduce exposure to sharp edges and dust; they do not make every shard harmless, so handle pieces deliberately.
Match the adhesive to the base
Adhesive is not interchangeable across projects. Cornell’s guidance separates the choices this way:

| Base | Adhesive guidance | Typical projects here |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic or metal | Exterior tile adhesive | Watering can, metal garden tool, some signs |
| Ceramic or concrete | Exterior cement-based adhesive | Terra-cotta planter, paver, stepping stone, concrete bench |
| Other bases | Acrylic- or latex-based adhesive | Picture frame, jewelry box, indoor panel |
Read the adhesive label for curing time and surface preparation. Curved objects need smaller pieces and careful pressure so edges do not lift. A decorative project should not be treated as food-contact equipment or as a structural repair; the cited project guidance does not establish those uses.
How to make a broken-china mosaic
- Choose the object and location. Decide whether it will stay indoors, sit outside under cover or face rain and frost. That decision controls the adhesive and grout.
- Clean and inspect the base. Remove dirt, grease and loose paint. Reject a base that flexes, crumbles or has an unstable finish.
- Sort the shards. Group pieces by color, pattern, thickness and approximate size. Set aside sharp fragments that are difficult to handle and save distinctive motifs for focal areas.
- Plan the layout dry. WheatonArts recommends choosing a color scheme and arranging pieces before adhering them. Leave intentional, fairly even channels for grout and check that the design fits around corners and curves.
- Trim only when necessary. Use mosaic or glass nippers for controlled reductions. Keep your eyes protected and contain the piece while trimming.
- Apply the correct adhesive. Work in small sections, press each shard firmly and keep adhesive out of the planned grout joints. Follow the product’s cure instructions rather than moving the object early.
- Let the mosaic set. Do not grout while pieces slide or rock. Remove squeeze-out before it hardens.
- Grout the joints. Force grout into the gaps, then wipe residue from the china faces as directed by the grout manufacturer. Outdoor mosaics require water- and frost-resistant cement and grout.
- Cure and inspect. Allow the full stated cure time. Check for loose pieces, exposed sharp corners and open joints before placing or hanging the finished object.
12 broken-china craft ideas
1. Mosaic flowerpot or planter
Source-demonstrated form: WheatonArts shows a terra-cotta planter decorated with pottery shards or old china, adhesive and grout. A planter gives you a forgiving, three-dimensional surface: larger fragments can cover broad areas while smaller pieces follow the rim. Use an exterior cement-based adhesive for ceramic or terra-cotta and weather-rated cement and grout if the pot will remain outdoors. Keep the mosaic on the outside surfaces and check the finished pot regularly for loose pieces after seasonal changes.
2. Mosaic coasters
Source-demonstrated form: WheatonArts’ coaster project uses a cork saucer, assorted shards, adhesive, grout, a glass nipper tool and safety glasses. Cork makes a light, flat base and is easy to arrange before gluing. Choose a restrained color scheme, leave grout channels between pieces and keep the underside clear so the coaster sits level. This is a decorative household project; the available guidance does not establish food-contact or heat-resistance performance.
3. Picture frame
Source-named project: Cornell lists a mosaic picture frame as a possible gift. Use a rigid wooden or composite frame and an acrylic- or latex-based adhesive suitable for that base. A narrow frame benefits from small shards and repeated motifs; avoid adding so much thickness that the frame cannot rest flat or accept its backing.

4. Jewelry box
Source-named project: Cornell also suggests a mosaic jewelry box. Decorate the lid as a focal panel and keep the hinge, clasp and inner rim free of adhesive and grout. Sort thin pieces for the lid so the box remains balanced, and use an adhesive compatible with the box material. Treat the result as a decorative container rather than making claims about impact resistance.
5. Garden stepping stone or path element
Source-grounded variation: Cornell lists paths and walkways, and Fine Gardening describes mosaics on concrete pavers. A concrete paver or purpose-made stepping stone provides a stable base for a simple geometric design. Use exterior cement-based adhesive and water- and frost-resistant cement and grout. Set the finished piece where it will not create a trip edge, and regard the mosaic as a surface decoration—not evidence that the stone has gained structural strength.
6. Garden bench or table accent
Source-named surface: Cornell and Fine Gardening include benches and tables among mosaic surfaces. Instead of covering every inch, create a centered medallion or border and leave load-bearing edges unobstructed. Prepare the surface carefully, select exterior materials and allow a complete cure before use. The guidance supports decorative treatment; it does not test a particular bench, table or installation for long-term durability.

7. Birdbath
Source example: Fine Gardening’s garden-mosaic article includes a birdbath image among its examples. Use that as inspiration for a basin exterior or pedestal, selecting a stable base and weather-resistant materials. Keep the water-holding surface and drainage functional, and inspect for lifted pieces or damaged grout. The example is not a durability certification, so do not assume every adhesive or grout is suitable for continuous water exposure.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
8. Watering can
Source-named object: Fine Gardening lists watering cans covered with mosaic pieces. A metal can calls for an exterior tile adhesive suited to metal or plastic according to Cornell’s substrate guidance. Keep the spout opening, handle movement and fill opening clear. Consider this primarily decorative; frequent handling, water weight and outdoor exposure can stress a mosaic, so inspect it before use.
9. Garden shovel or trowel decoration
Source-named object: Cornell includes garden tools, and Fine Gardening names trowels. Decorate a broad, stable area such as a handle or upper face, using pieces that cannot interfere with gripping or digging. A metal tool needs an exterior tile adhesive intended for metal. Because working tools flex, strike soil and experience abrasion, a decorated tool is best treated as an ornamental display unless you have verified that the attachment method withstands that use.
10. Birdhouse
Source-named object: Fine Gardening names birdhouses as garden mosaic objects. Cover the roof edge, front panel or trim while keeping the entrance, ventilation and clean-out access unobstructed. Use weather-resistant materials for an outdoor birdhouse and avoid creating sharp projections around the opening. The source supports the object as a mosaic idea, not a claim about bird behavior or a particular product’s outdoor lifespan.

Source-grounded variation: Cornell lists walls and fences; a small sign panel is a practical extension of that flat-surface idea. Build the design on a rigid panel, leave room for mounting hardware and keep the sign legible if it carries words or numbers. Select adhesive and grout for the panel material and exposure. Mount it securely only after the mosaic has cured fully; the mosaic itself should not be used to compensate for an inadequate bracket or fastener.

12. Porcelain-shard keychain or pendant
Advanced maker technique: A Lil Blue Boo tutorial published July 27, 2011, describes grinding a shard smooth and drilling a hole with a rotary tool, while advising protective eyewear. This is different from the beginner method of gluing shards to a base. Use only suitable tools, contain dust and fragments, wear eye protection and practice on expendable material before attempting a finished piece. The edges and drilled hole must be completely smoothed before adding a jump ring or cord; stop if the porcelain begins to crack.

| Project group | Setting | Base or surface | Relative skill and material considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coaster, frame, jewelry box | Indoor | Cork, wood or another rigid household base | Beginner-friendly layout; acrylic- or latex-based adhesive may suit the base |
| Planter, watering can, tool, birdhouse | Outdoor or mixed | Terra-cotta, metal or wood | Curves and handling increase difficulty; use substrate-appropriate exterior adhesive |
| Stepping stone, bench, table | Outdoor | Concrete or masonry | Heavier pieces and larger areas; water- and frost-resistant cement and grout required |
| Wall, fence or sign panel | Outdoor | Rigid panel or masonry | Plan mounting separately; keep the panel stable and weather-rated |
| Keychain or pendant | Portable | Single porcelain shard | Advanced rotary-tool work; grinding and drilling require dust and eye protection |
Common problems and practical fixes
Pieces slide during layout
Use less adhesive, work in smaller sections and wait for the adhesive to reach its stated set before moving the object. Curved surfaces may require smaller shards and temporary support.
Grout covers the pattern
Wipe the china faces while the grout is at the cleanup stage specified by its label. Leaving excessive grout on textured or porous surfaces can make motifs difficult to read.

Do not rely on grout to hide a dangerous corner. Replace the shard, trim it with mosaic nippers or smooth it using the controlled method appropriate to the project. The keychain technique requires grinding before drilling and assembly.
Outdoor joints crack or pieces loosen
Confirm that both adhesive and grout are rated for exterior conditions and that the base is stable. Cornell’s requirement is water- and frost-resistant cement and grout; no source here guarantees a particular product or climate outcome. Inspect seasonal work and repair loose areas promptly.
The design looks chaotic
Return to the dry layout stage. Limit the palette, repeat one motif, vary shard size intentionally and reserve the most distinctive fragments for focal points rather than distributing every piece at random.
How to make the finished piece last
- Keep indoor mosaics away from unnecessary impacts and moisture.
- For outdoor objects, provide a stable base and use materials rated for water and frost.
- Do not place grout or adhesive across hinges, handles, drainage holes, entrances or moving parts.
- Inspect after freezing weather, heavy handling or a move; remove and replace any shard that has become loose or sharp.
- Label advanced drilled-shard work as fragile and handle it more like porcelain jewelry than a rugged metal key ring.
These twelve ideas turn sentimental fragments into objects with a new purpose while keeping the technique realistic: sort first, test the layout, match materials to the substrate and treat safety as part of the design. Start with a flat coaster or frame if you are new to mosaics, then move to curved or weather-exposed surfaces as your control improves.
