The best basement is planned around how your household will use it, not around a single piece of equipment. A dark, low-ceilinged level can become a welcoming lounge, an office, a guest room, a fitness area, a play space or several of those at once when lighting, moisture control, circulation and storage are solved first. The 13 ideas below range from paint-and-furnish upgrades to projects that need plumbing, structural coordination or specialized ventilation.

Start with the basement’s constraints and your household’s purpose
Before choosing a color palette or ordering furniture, inspect the space as a building system. Look for seepage, musty odors, condensation, cracks, drainage problems, low headroom, limited egress and awkward stair access. The Basement Information Centre identifies home offices, gyms, music rooms, pools, hobbies, games and storage as possible basement uses, but the right choice depends on daylight, ventilation, waterproofing and local rules.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises correcting moisture problems before other remodeling work. Water can enter through walls, joints and floors; exterior grading should direct ground water away from the foundation, and indoor moisture may require outdoor exhaust or dehumidification. Carpet installed over damp concrete can absorb moisture and support biological pollutants, so verify that the slab is dry enough for the flooring system you select.

If the basement has not been tested, test for radon on the lowest level that people regularly occupy before finishing it. Include the basement in the home’s ventilation plan rather than sealing it into a stagnant pocket. Insulation and air-sealing details should reflect your climate and the condition of the existing foundation; ENERGY STAR points to DOE Building America guidance because one wall or floor assembly does not suit every site.
For an entertaining basement, the entrance deserves special attention. Rachel Alcorn, owner and principal of Two Hands Interiors in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, puts it this way: “When a basement will be an entertaining space, keep in mind what the entrance to the basement will feel like and how it will welcome friends and family,”

1. Use wallpaper to give a windowless room a point of view
Wallpaper can supply pattern and visual warmth where daylight is scarce. Use it on one stair wall, behind a media console or throughout a finished room when the walls are reliably dry. Peel-and-stick wallpaper is a practical, removable option for a rental or a room likely to change as children grow. Prepare the wall carefully: smooth joints, prime dusty surfaces and keep seams away from areas with recurring condensation. Pair a busy pattern with simple trim and durable painted surfaces so the room feels intentional rather than crowded.

2. Build a cozy nook instead of forcing a full-size living room
A low ceiling or narrow foundation bay may work better as a reading corner, conversation nook or quiet retreat than as a conventional lounge. Fit a compact sofa or built-in bench under the lowest section, add layered lamps and use a rug only after confirming the slab is dry. Closed storage under the seat keeps blankets and games out of sight. Darker paint can make the nook feel enveloping, while a lighter ceiling preserves the available height.
3. Create a culinary space for everyday use
A basement kitchen or prep area can support holiday hosting, a household that entertains often or a separate apartment, but it is a construction project rather than a decorating update. Plan water supply, waste lines, electrical capacity, ventilation, appliance clearances and an accessible shutoff before cabinetry is ordered. A compact beverage station may meet the need without duplicating the main kitchen. Keep food preparation away from any wall with unresolved dampness, and select flooring that tolerates spills and can be removed or repaired in sections.
4. Design a bar or speakeasy with the stair arrival in mind
A bar gives a basement a social center and can be scaled from a dry counter with under-counter storage to a fully plumbed wet bar. Architectural Digest, citing the 2025 Houzz Report, says searches for whiskey bars rose 82% and small wet bars 36%; these are search-interest figures, not counts of completed remodels. Decide whether the room needs a sink, ice maker, refrigerator, dishwasher or only glassware storage. Use washable paint behind the counter, protect corners from chair traffic and provide task lighting without making the whole room feel like a commercial venue.

5. Turn a suitable corner into a wine cellar
A cellar is appropriate only when temperature, humidity, insulation and vapor-control details can be managed. A decorative wine wall or glass-front cabinet is less demanding than a climate-controlled room. Keep bottles away from exterior walls that show seasonal moisture and avoid placing refrigeration equipment where its heat or condensate will affect finished surfaces. If you want a true cellar, have the enclosure and mechanical requirements designed together rather than treating racks as an afterthought.
6. Make an elevated play space for children
Play areas benefit from clear sightlines, resilient finishes and storage that children can reach. Use washable eggshell or satin paint, rounded furniture edges and anchored shelving. A raised platform can define a reading or building zone, but it must be engineered for loads and guarded against falls. Reserve the brightest or best-ventilated area for activities that require close supervision, and leave an unobstructed path to stairs and any required emergency exit.
7. Zone one open basement for several changing uses
You do not need permanent walls to create a lounge, work area, play zone and storage wall. Arrange furniture backs, area rugs, paint blocks, lighting circuits and ceiling treatments to signal boundaries while preserving flexibility. A half-height cabinet can separate a desk from a television without blocking borrowed light. This approach suits families whose needs will change; the zones can be rearranged without moving plumbing or rebuilding partitions.

8. Make the media console the room’s anchor
A well-designed media wall can organize a television, speakers, game systems and concealed cables while providing a visual focal point. Ventilate enclosed electronics, leave service access and avoid mounting equipment on a wall that is vulnerable to dampness. Acoustic panels can reduce echo, but they should supplement—not replace—proper speaker placement and safe electrical work. Use a darker, low-reflectance paint behind the screen to reduce glare, then add dimmable, indirect lighting for circulation.

A sauna introduces heat, steam and concentrated water vapor into a below-grade environment. It needs a properly designed enclosure, waterproofing, drainage where applicable, electrical service, clearances and a ventilation strategy that protects adjacent finishes. Do not install one against a foundation wall with a history of seepage. Have qualified professionals confirm structural, electrical and mechanical requirements, and verify permits before construction.
10. Create a private guest bedroom
A basement guest room works when it has safe egress, adequate ceiling height, comfortable temperature control, privacy and a nearby bathroom or practical route to one. Give the room the best available daylight rather than treating a tiny window as an afterthought. Use sound-dampening doors and resilient, moisture-tolerant flooring. Check local rules for emergency escape openings, ceiling heights, smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms before calling the space a bedroom.

11. Treat the stair landing as a statement space
The stair landing is the first impression, so it can carry more design character than a hidden utility area. Paint the stair wall in a saturated color, use a durable runner, add a slim console or install a ceiling fixture that improves visibility. Protect high-contact surfaces with scrubbable paint and specify handrails that are comfortable and code-compliant. A welcoming landing also helps guests understand where to go when the basement contains several zones.
12. Use mirrors and a gallery hall to extend the space
Mirrors can reflect light from the stairwell or windows and make a narrow corridor feel wider. Hang them securely away from locations where carts, toys or furniture will strike them. A gallery hall turns an unavoidable passage into a destination: group framed art, family photographs or children’s work on one wall, then use consistent mats or frame finishes to create order. Keep the opposite wall calmer so the corridor remains easy to navigate.
13. Combine a movie room, gym or game area according to your priorities
A dedicated theater, golf simulator, pool, gym or multifunctional playroom can be spectacular, but each demands different clearances, power, ventilation, acoustic treatment and maintenance. A theater needs sightline planning and cable access; a gym needs impact-resistant flooring and equipment clearance; a simulator needs ceiling height and an uninterrupted swing envelope; a pool requires substantial waterproofing, humidity control and structural coordination. If the household uses several activities, choose movable equipment and storage instead of permanently dedicating the entire floor to one pursuit.

A practical sequence for finishing the basement
- Document the existing conditions. Photograph cracks, stains, pipes, vents, windows, ceiling obstructions and the stair route. Note where daylight enters and measure clear ceiling height in every zone.
- Resolve water and air problems first. Repair leaks and seepage, confirm that exterior grading drains away from the foundation, and address condensation. Use suitable dehumidification or outdoor exhaust where needed.
- Test for radon. Test the lowest lived-in level before installing finishes if it has not been tested previously. Follow local guidance for mitigation if the result is elevated.
- Check code and permits. Confirm requirements for structural changes, plumbing, electrical work, ventilation, stairs, guards, smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms, ceiling height and bedroom egress. Guidance from The Basement Information Centre includes UK regulatory references; readers elsewhere must use their own jurisdiction’s rules.
- Choose the use that fits the light. Put an office or guest room near the best window or daylight source. Reserve darker, lower areas for a media room, storage or a cozy lounge.
- Plan utilities before closing walls. Map outlets, lighting circuits, data cables, plumbing access, heating and cooling, equipment clearances and service panels. Keep shutoffs and cleanouts accessible.
- Select moisture-tolerant assemblies. Confirm that the slab and walls are ready for the proposed floor and wall finishes. Avoid trapping moisture behind decorative layers or placing carpet over a concrete floor that remains damp.
- Build in flexibility. Use movable storage, furniture-based zoning and lighting on separate controls when the room may need to change. Permanent plumbing or heavy equipment should be installed only when the long-term use is clear.
What is popular right now in basement designs?
Search interest reported by Architectural Digest, citing the 2025 Houzz Report, points toward entertaining and game-oriented spaces: whiskey-bar searches were up 82%, poker-table searches 77%, billiard-room searches 39%, small wet-bar searches 36%, video-game-room searches 34% and game-table searches 20%. Those figures describe search activity reported by the publication, not verified remodeling volume. In practice, the durable trend is personalization: homeowners are assigning basements to the activities their main floors cannot accommodate while using flexible zones to avoid locking the room into one fad.
What homeowners need to know before a basement remodel
Design choices cannot compensate for a wet foundation, unsafe air quality or inadequate exits. Moisture, radon, ventilation, insulation, electrical capacity and local approvals should be settled before decorative work. Specialized additions such as pools, saunas, wet bars and simulators require coordinated advice from appropriately qualified contractors or designers. Once the shell is sound, paint, wallpaper, lighting and furniture can make a modest intervention feel finished—and can be changed later if your household’s priorities change.
