The bathroom is a poor storage location for many medicines, cosmetics and medical supplies because steam, heat, temperature swings and contamination can damage products or shorten their useful life. Move vulnerable items to a cool, dry place, but treat the label or manufacturer’s instructions as the final authority: some products require refrigeration, while others must avoid high temperatures or light.
The list below is an editorial checklist, not an official FDA list of 13 products. A bathroom does not automatically ruin every item in these categories; sensitivity depends on the formulation, packaging and stated storage limits.

Showers add moisture to the air, and a small room can experience repeated heat and condensation cycles. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says improper medicine storage, including a damp bathroom cabinet, can reduce effectiveness before the printed expiration date. For most medicines, it recommends a cool, dry location such as a dresser drawer, storage box or closet shelf. A suitable kitchen cabinet can also work if it is away from the sink, stove, dishwasher and hot appliances, and inaccessible to children. The product label overrides this general rule; some medicines need refrigeration and some must not be exposed to high temperatures. See the FDA’s guidance on expired medicines and storage.
Cosmetics have a different labeling system. FDA explains that “Exposure to moisture, such as in a bathroom, may make it easier for bacteria and fungi to grow.” Heat, sunlight, air and temperature changes can also alter a cosmetic’s color, texture, smell or overall integrity. U.S. law generally does not require cosmetic expiration dates, so there is no single shelf-life rule that fits every product. Sunscreens and some acne treatments are drugs, or both drugs and cosmetics, and follow additional drug requirements. The FDA’s pages on cosmetic shelf life and safe cosmetic use explain those distinctions.

For medical devices and diagnostic supplies, unusually high heat or humidity can make a device behave unexpectedly, reduce shelf life, destroy a product or compromise sterile packaging. The effect is product-specific, not proof that ordinary bathroom air damages every device. Follow the package storage limits and contact the manufacturer if they are missing or the device’s operation is uncertain. Never use electrical equipment when the device or its power cord is wet, as the FDA warns in its guidance on devices exposed to heat and humidity.
The 13 things you should not routinely keep in the bathroom
These entries separate common product types so you can identify what is actually in your cabinet. They are not a claim that every item in a category will fail in a bathroom; inspect the label, packaging and condition of the particular product.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →1. Prescription tablets and capsules
Keep routine prescription medicines out of a steamy cabinet unless their instructions specifically say otherwise. Moisture can affect stability even while the medicine is still within its expiration date, and a degraded drug may not provide its intended benefit. Leave tablets and capsules in their labeled containers so the storage directions and expiration information remain available. Store them in a locked or otherwise child-resistant, cool, dry location.
2. Over-the-counter pain, cold and allergy medicines
Nonprescription products are not exempt from storage requirements. Pain relievers, cold remedies and allergy medicines can be exposed to the same humidity and heat as prescription drugs. Use the package directions rather than assuming that a familiar product is robust. A bedroom drawer, closet shelf or dedicated storage box outside the bathroom is usually a better starting point for products whose labels call for room-temperature, dry storage.

3. Liquid medicines
Liquid formulations deserve an especially careful label check because their instructions can differ from those for tablets of the same medicine. Some require refrigeration after opening; others must not be frozen or overheated. Close the bottle promptly, keep the measuring device clean and follow the product’s stated time limit after opening. If the label does not clearly describe storage after exposure to bathroom heat or condensation, ask a pharmacist rather than relying on appearance.
4. Medicines marked “refrigerate,” “protect from light” or “do not expose to heat”
These instructions are product-specific and take priority over any general household rule. Move refrigerated medicines to the refrigerator compartment specified by the label, not to a bathroom mini-fridge with uncertain temperature control. Keep light-sensitive medicines in the original opaque container, and do not leave heat-sensitive products beside a radiator, water heater or sunny window. The FDA notes that expiration dates are based on stability information for the particular drug; a date alone does not make poor storage harmless. More detail is available in its expiration-date questions and answers.
5. Expired, damaged or unexplained medicines
Do not use a bathroom cabinet as a holding place for medicines that are past their expiration date, have been exposed to an unknown amount of heat or moisture, or look different from when purchased. Color, odor or texture changes are warning signs, but a normal appearance cannot prove that a poorly stored drug is safe. Ask a pharmacist or follow local medicine-disposal guidance instead of returning questionable products to use.
6. Foundation, concealer and other liquid makeup
Liquid complexion products contain water and other ingredients that can support microbial growth when handling and storage are poor. Bathroom humidity, repeated temperature swings and an open cap increase the opportunity for contamination or formula changes. Keep the container tightly closed, avoid touching the applicator to unclean surfaces and move it to a dry drawer. Discard it if its smell, color, separation or texture changes.

7. Mascara, liquid eyeliner and other eye cosmetics
Eye-area products are handled close to sensitive tissue, so cleanliness matters as much as storage location. Steam and damp surfaces can encourage contamination, while repeated opening exposes the formula to air. Keep caps sealed, do not share products and do not keep using one that develops an unusual smell, color or consistency. Follow any disposal interval printed by the manufacturer; the absence of a date on a U.S. cosmetic label does not establish unlimited shelf life.
8. Face creams, lotions and serums
Moisturizers and treatment serums may change when exposed to heat, moisture, air or sunlight. A bathroom shelf beside the shower is a particularly variable environment, even if the product appears normal. Store jars and pumps in a clean, dry place, close them immediately after use and follow the label’s temperature instructions. Use clean hands or the supplied applicator so the product is not repeatedly seeded with bacteria.
9. Sunscreen
Sunscreen is not governed solely by general cosmetic advice: it is regulated as a drug in the United States, and some products are also cosmetics. Its expiration date and storage directions therefore matter. Keep it in the location specified on the package, away from excessive heat, and discard it when expired or when its appearance or smell changes. A bathroom cabinet is not a substitute for the labeled storage conditions.
10. Acne treatments
Many acne products are drugs or drug-cosmetic combinations, so their active ingredients and storage limits can differ from those of ordinary moisturizer. Read the Drug Facts panel for temperature, light and expiration instructions. Keep the container closed and dry, and do not transfer the product to an unlabeled jar. If it has been left in high heat or becomes discolored or separated, consult a pharmacist or the manufacturer before applying it.

11. Fragrance and other light- or heat-sensitive cosmetics
Perfume, body sprays and similar cosmetics can show changes in smell, color or texture when exposed to heat, sunlight and air. Humid bathrooms also create condensation on bottles and caps. Store these products in a shaded, temperature-stable drawer or closet rather than on an open vanity. The FDA cautions that storage needs vary, so treat an unusual odor or visible change as a reason to stop using the product, not as proof that it can be restored.
12. Diagnostic supplies and sterile medical devices
Test strips, sterile dressings, collection kits and other diagnostic or medical supplies may have narrow temperature or humidity limits. Moisture can shorten shelf life or compromise sterile packaging, and a package that is wet, torn or unsealed should not be assumed sterile. Keep supplies in their original packaging, check the printed storage range and expiration date, and contact the manufacturer if the package was exposed to unusual heat or humidity. Do not generalize from one device to another.
13. Electrical medical equipment and devices
Blood-pressure monitors, nebulizers, powered therapy equipment and similar devices should not be stored where splashes or condensation can reach the electronics, plug or cord. Before use, inspect the device and cable; if either is wet, do not switch it on. Drying the outside does not establish that internal components are safe. Follow the manufacturer’s storage and cleaning instructions and request a safety determination when the device has been soaked or operated in a humid environment.

| Storage choice | Best use | Checks before using it |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom drawer or closet shelf | Most medicines and many cosmetics labeled for cool, dry storage | Keep away from heaters, direct sun and children; keep containers closed |
| Dedicated storage box | Organizing medicines outside the bathroom | Use it as an organizer, not as a humidity-control device; retain original labels |
| Kitchen cabinet | Medicines whose labels permit room-temperature storage | Choose a cabinet away from the sink, stove, dishwasher and hot appliances |
| Refrigerator | Only products whose labels specifically require refrigeration | Use the stated temperature range; do not freeze products unless directed |
| Manufacturer-specified location | Medical devices, diagnostics and products with special limits | Follow the package exactly and contact the manufacturer when limits are unclear |
A storage box can make an outside-the-bathroom medicine station easier to organize, but it does not regulate humidity or guarantee stability. Keep medicines in their original, labeled containers and secure the box from children.
How to relocate and check products safely
- Read the label first. Record requirements such as “refrigerate,” “protect from light,” a temperature range, an after-opening period or a warning about moisture.
- Inspect the package. Look for a broken seal, dampness, swelling, leakage, discoloration, separation, an unusual smell or illegible instructions.
- Separate uncertain products. Place questionable medicines, cosmetics and medical supplies in a clearly marked area so nobody uses them accidentally while you seek advice.
- Move usable products. Choose a stable, dry location away from heat, sunlight, plumbing leaks and children. Do not decant medicines into unlabeled containers.
- Clean the storage area. Wipe shelves and organizers, let them dry completely and keep caps, applicators and measuring devices clean.
- Ask the right expert. A pharmacist can advise on a medicine; the device manufacturer can interpret medical-device exposure. If electrical equipment or its cord is wet, leave it unplugged and do not test it.
Bathroom storage questions that need a product-specific answer
Does bathroom humidity ruin makeup?
It can make contamination and formula changes more likely, but the outcome depends on the product, packaging, handling and duration of exposure. Keep cosmetics clean and tightly closed, protect them from temperature extremes and discard them when color or smell changes.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Can medicine stay in a bathroom if it is not expired?
An expiration date does not override storage conditions. FDA says damp storage can reduce effectiveness before that date. Check the label and move most medicines to a cool, dry place; obtain professional advice if the product has experienced significant heat or moisture.
What if a medical device was exposed to steam?
Stop and read its storage and operating instructions. High humidity can affect some devices or sterile packaging, while ordinary bathroom conditions may not damage others. Do not use a wet electrical device or power cord, and contact the manufacturer when the device’s condition or limits are uncertain.
A practical default
Use the bathroom for products designed to tolerate its conditions, not as a universal medicine cabinet. Keep medicines, vulnerable cosmetics and medical supplies in a cool, dry, label-compliant location; treat changes in appearance or packaging as warnings; and let the product’s own instructions—not a blanket rule—decide where it belongs.
