13 Best Drawing Apps for iPad and Apple Pencil

Short answer: Procreate is the strongest all-purpose choice for iPad illustration and painting. Choose Adobe Fresco if you want a free starting point, Concepts for an infinite canvas, Affinity Designer 2 or Linearity Curve for vector work, and Clip Studio Paint for comics, manga, and multi-page production.

The right choice depends more on your workflow than on a universal ranking. A painter needs different tools from a logo designer, comic artist, or someone who wants to sketch ideas across an unlimited canvas.

This guide is based on current App Store listings and official product or support documentation reviewed for this topic. The recommendations describe advertised features and compatibility, not hands-on testing, latency measurements, or performance benchmarks. App prices, ratings, plan terms, compatibility, and features can change, so confirm the current App Store listing before downloading or purchasing.

The best iPad drawing app for each kind of artist

There is no single winner for every kind of drawing. The table below is a practical shortlist ordered by overall audience fit, feature breadth, Apple Pencil integration, and workflow usefulness—not a lab-tested performance ranking.

App Best for Workflow Apple Pencil features highlighted by the listing or documentation Cost model and main limitation
Procreate Most illustrators and painters Raster painting and illustration iPad-first Apple Pencil workflow, customizable brushes, pressure-oriented drawing tools Paid app; check the current App Store terms. Not a full vector or multi-page comic-layout suite.
Adobe Fresco Free painting and simple animation Pixel, vector, and Live Brushes Apple Pencil Pro compatibility, plus pressure-sensitive brush workflows Free download; Adobe account or ecosystem requirements may apply to some workflows.
Concepts Infinite-canvas ideas and planning Scalable strokes on an open canvas Optimized for pressure- and tilt-sensitive styli such as Apple Pencil Check the current free and paid feature split. Less focused on finished textured painting.
Affinity Designer 2 Professional vector and mixed-media design Vector and raster workspaces Apple Pencil pressure, tilt, and angle support Paid design application; its depth creates a steeper learning curve.
Clip Studio Paint Comics, manga, webtoons, and advanced illustration Raster illustration, page production, and animation Apple Pencil Scribble and Apple Pencil Pro Squeeze support Plan tiers apply. EX is the relevant tier for multi-page comics and unlimited animation frames.
Infinite Painter Customizable brush-based painting Raster painting Apple Pencil pressure and tilt support Free and Pro feature split; the free version limits canvas, layers, and professional tools.
Sketchbook Clean, low-distraction sketching Raster sketching and painting Apple Pencil Pro Squeeze, Barrel Roll, and hover previews Core app plus Premium Bundle; the complete toolset is not entirely free.
Linearity Curve Accessible vector design Vector paths, artboards, and layout Pressure-sensitive Apple Pencil drawing Check the current plan. It is for scalable design rather than textured painting.
ibis Paint X Budget drawing and manga-style art Raster illustration with a large asset library Apple Pencil hover support and stylus-oriented drawing tools Ad-supported or free variant with in-app purchases; the interface can feel busy.
Tayasui Sketches Natural-media general sketching Raster sketching with simulated media Pressure, angle, and width response with Apple Pencil Free download with premium features through in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Adobe Illustrator Creative Cloud vector workflows Vector lines, shapes, typography, and gradients Apple Pencil gestures and drawing controls Creative Cloud-oriented, subscription-based terms; most useful to existing Adobe users.
Art Set 4 Realistic traditional-media simulation Digital oil, watercolor, markers, and other media Apple Pencil drawing and media effects Check current in-app purchase terms. It is not a complete professional illustration suite.
Tayasui Watercolor & Painting Dedicated watercolor practice Focused natural-media painting Apple Pencil pressure, tilt, and stroke-width response Check current App Store terms. More specialized and less general-purpose than Tayasui Sketches.

Apple Pencil compatibility comes before app choice

When an app says it supports Apple Pencil, that does not necessarily mean it supports every Apple Pencil model or every advanced Pencil feature. Support may refer to basic stylus input, pressure and tilt response, hover previews, Scribble, Squeeze, or Barrel Roll. These capabilities also depend on the iPad and Pencil combination.

According to Apple’s current compatibility table, Apple Pencil Pro works with the following groups:

  • iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch models using M4 or M5
  • iPad Air 11-inch and 13-inch models using M2, M3, or M4
  • iPad mini with A17 Pro
  • iPadOS 17.5 or later

Other iPad generations belong to separate compatibility groups for Apple Pencil USB-C, Apple Pencil 2nd generation, or Apple Pencil 1st generation. Do not buy a Pencil based only on the iPad screen size. Identify the exact iPad generation and consult Apple’s compatibility information before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A quick compatibility check

  1. On the iPad, open Settings > General > About and note the model name and model number.
  2. Identify the Apple Pencil model you already own, or the model you intend to buy.
  3. Compare both with Apple’s current Pencil compatibility table.
  4. After installing an app, check its current App Store listing for the required iPadOS version and any model-specific feature notes.
  5. Test the features you actually need—such as pressure, tilt, hover, Squeeze, or Scribble—in a new document before committing to a large project.

Best apps for painting and illustration

1. Procreate — best overall for iPad illustration and painting

Procreate is the clearest default recommendation for artists who want a dedicated iPad-first painting and illustration environment. Its interface is designed around iPad and Apple Pencil, and its toolset covers the central needs of digital illustrators: customizable brushes, layers, non-destructive editing, color controls, perspective guides, symmetry, animation, and time-lapse recording.

It also supports Page Assist for page-oriented work, PSD files, and exports such as PNG, TIFF, PDF, OBJ, USDZ, GIF, and MP4. That combination makes it suitable for digital painting, character art, concept art, lettering, and finished illustration without forcing the artist into a desktop-style interface.

Choose it if: you want one polished app for painting, illustration, lettering, and character work, and you prefer a raster-first workflow.

Think twice if: your main output is a logo that must remain editable as vector paths, or you need extensive multi-page manga production. Affinity Designer 2, Linearity Curve, Adobe Illustrator, and Clip Studio Paint are more appropriate for those jobs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Adobe Fresco — best free painting and animation starting point

Adobe Fresco is a strong starting point for beginners who want to paint without paying for a traditional premium drawing app immediately. It combines pixel brushes, vector brushes, and Live Brushes, so the app can cover both raster-style painting and some scalable brush work. The listing also highlights unlimited layers, animation tools, motion paths, symmetry guides, time-lapse export, tutorials, and access to projects across devices.

Fresco is particularly attractive if you already use Adobe products or want a straightforward route from sketching to simple animation. Apple Pencil Pro is listed as compatible, but the exact Pencil feature set still depends on the iPad and Pencil model.

Choose it if: you want a free entry point, mixed pixel and vector brushes, tutorials, or a connection to an Adobe-based workflow.

Watch out for: free does not necessarily mean every Adobe workflow is unrestricted. Creative Cloud accounts, connected Adobe products, or plan-related requirements may affect project access and ecosystem features. Check the current terms before treating it as a completely self-contained replacement for paid software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Infinite Painter — best for brush customization and painting controls

Infinite Painter is aimed at artists who want more control over how brushes behave. Its listing describes hundreds of brushes and more than 100 brush settings, along with layers, masks, symmetry, perspective guides, reference images, time-lapse, color correction, filters, liquify, CMYK modes, and PSD export.

That makes it a substantial alternative to simpler sketching apps. The perspective and reference tools are useful for artists who move between studies, environments, and finished paintings, while masks and adjustment tools provide a more configurable raster workflow.

Choose it if: brush tweaking, perspective assistance, reference images, and painting controls matter more to you than having the most familiar iPad illustration ecosystem.

Watch out for: the free tier limits canvas size, layers, and professional tools. Treat the free version as a trial of the workflow rather than assuming that every advertised feature is included at no cost.

Apple Pencil (USB-C): Device Compatibility Check Required
  • WHY APPLE PENCIL - With pixel-perfect precision, tilt sensitivity, and low latency, Apple Pencil (USB-C) makes note-taking, signing documents, and drawing easy at an affordable price. It pairs and charges via USB-C and can magnetically attach to your iPad.
  • COMPATIBILITY - Apple Pencil (USB-C) works with iPad Pro 13-inch (M4 and M5); iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generation); iPad Pro 11-inch (M4 and M5); iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation); iPad Air 13-inch (M2, M3, M4); iPad Air 11-inch (M2 and M3); iPad Air (4th and 5th generation); iPad (A16), iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad mini (6th generation); and iPad (10th generation).
  • EASY AND NATURAL - Write, sketch, and draw with pixel-perfect precision. Apple Pencil (USB-C) does it all with low latency and tilt sensitivity. Apple Pencil pairs and charges via USB-C and features a flat edge that attaches magnetically.
  • TRANSFORMS IPAD INTO A CANVAS - Draw, sketch, color, take notes, and mark up documents. Use built-in apps like Notes and Freeform, or choose from over a million more apps available on the App Store. And for pros, use Apple Pencil hover on iPad Pro and iPad Air to preview your mark before you make it.
  • WHAT'S IN THE BOX - Apple Pencil (USB-C)

4. Sketchbook — best clean general-purpose sketching app

Sketchbook keeps the interface quiet and unobtrusive, which is valuable when menus and panels interrupt your drawing process. Its toolset includes customizable pencils, markers, airbrushes, smear tools, guides, rulers, stroke tools, layers, and blend modes.

The app listing highlights Apple Pencil Pro features including Squeeze, Barrel Roll, and hover previews. Those are useful conveniences for artists with compatible hardware, but they should not be confused with a requirement for Apple Pencil Pro; model compatibility still depends on the iPad.

Choose it if: you want a clean canvas for quick sketches, student work, rough concepts, or drawings that may grow into more finished pieces.

Watch out for: the Premium Bundle is required for premium tools. The free portion is useful, but the complete feature set should not be described as entirely free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. ibis Paint X — best budget and manga-friendly feature library

ibis Paint X packs an unusually large number of tools and assets into a low-entry-cost drawing app. Its listing advertises more than 105,000 brushes, more than 29,000 materials, more than 3,000 fonts, filters, screen tones, blending modes, stabilization, rulers, clipping masks, drawing-process recording, and Apple Pencil hover support.

That collection makes it especially appealing to manga-style artists, social-art users, and beginners who want to experiment with many effects without immediately buying a premium app. Screen tones, fonts, stabilization, and the large material library are practical advantages for comic-inspired work.

Choose it if: you want a broad budget toolset, manga-oriented assets, social tutorials, or a large library of brushes and materials.

Watch out for: the ad-supported or free variant can feel much busier than Procreate or Sketchbook. In-app purchase details may change, so verify which tools and ad-removal options are included in the current version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Tayasui Sketches — best natural-media general sketching app

Tayasui Sketches focuses on the feel of traditional tools rather than on a dense production interface. It includes pens, pencils, oil pastels, watercolor, acrylic, airbrush, smudge tools, rulers, patterns, and layers. PSD import and export and cloud synchronization also make it more useful than a purely disposable sketchpad.

The app states that Apple Pencil strokes respond to pressure, angle, and width. That makes it a good fit for users who want a tactile sketching experience and do not need the extensive page management or technical controls of a comics suite.

Choose it if: you enjoy quick studies, travel drawing, watercolor-like marks, or a more approachable natural-media toolbox.

Watch out for: the free download is not the same as the full Pro feature set. Premium tools are offered through in-app purchases or subscriptions, and current terms should be checked before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Art Set 4 — best for realistic traditional-media simulation

Art Set 4 is built around the immediacy of a digital canvas that imitates traditional media. It includes felt markers, oil paints, watercolors, and other realistic media, with effects such as flowing watercolor and oil-paint buildup highlighted in its App Store description.

It is a good choice for hobbyists and painters who want to pick a medium and begin working without first learning a large production suite. The focused interface can be more inviting than an app filled with technical vector, masking, and animation controls.

Choose it if: the sensation and visual behavior of simulated paint matter more than advanced file management or professional illustration production.

Watch out for: Art Set 4 should not be presented as a complete replacement for Procreate, Affinity Designer, or Clip Studio Paint. Recent update activity and App Store metadata can change, so avoid making claims about its long-term development momentum without checking the current listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Tayasui Watercolor & Painting — best focused watercolor option

Tayasui Watercolor & Painting is the specialist choice in this list. It concentrates on watercolor practice with realistic dry and wet brushes, more than 20 tools, and Apple Pencil support for pressure, tilt, and stroke width.

The distinction from Tayasui Sketches is important. Sketches is the broader natural-media toolbox, while Watercolor & Painting is better when watercolor is the reason you are opening the app. A focused toolset can be an advantage for practice because it removes unrelated illustration and layout features.

Choose it if: you want a simpler watercolor-specific environment rather than a general drawing suite.

Watch out for: it overlaps with Tayasui Sketches and is less suitable if you need extensive layers, page layouts, vector paths, or animation.

Best apps for vector drawing and design

9. Affinity Designer 2 for iPad — best serious vector and mixed-media choice

Affinity Designer 2 is the strongest option here for artists who need editable vector artwork but still want raster finishing tools in the same application. It combines vector and raster workspaces with vector drawing, shape building, Boolean operations, unlimited artboards, typography tools, and professional color workflows including CMYK, LAB, and RGB.

Its file and export workflow is designed for projects that may move beyond the iPad, with support for formats and workflows involving PSD, PDF, SVG, and other professional design files. Apple Pencil pressure, tilt, and angle support make it suitable for direct drawing rather than only arranging pre-made shapes.

Choose it if: you are creating logos, branding, icons, posters, stickers, UI graphics, print work, or vector illustrations that must scale cleanly.

Watch out for: this is a design application first. Its feature depth is powerful but creates a steeper learning curve than Procreate, Sketchbook, or a focused sketching app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Linearity Curve — best accessible vector alternative

Linearity Curve offers a touch-oriented vector workflow across iPad, iPhone, and Mac. Its highlighted tools include Bezier and node editing, Shape Builder, Boolean operations, multiple artboards, vectorization, typography, and export to SVG, PDF, PNG, JPG, and TIFF. It also supports RGB and CMYK workflows and pressure-sensitive Apple Pencil drawing.

Curve is especially useful when you want to turn a sketch into scalable artwork or build marketing graphics and design assets without using a raster painting app. Multiple artboards make it easier to keep related variations together.

Choose it if: you want an accessible path into editable vector paths, logos, scalable illustrations, and cross-device design.

Watch out for: vector tools are not a substitute for textured brush simulation. If your priority is painterly blending, natural media, or character painting, Procreate, Fresco, or Infinite Painter will be a more natural fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Adobe Illustrator for iPad — best for Creative Cloud users

Adobe Illustrator for iPad is the most logical choice for artists already working in Adobe Illustrator on a desktop. It is built around vector lines, shapes, typography, gradients, effects, and Apple Pencil gestures. Adobe also describes cloud synchronization and movement of projects between Illustrator, Photoshop, and Fresco.

That ecosystem matters more than any individual iPad feature. A designer who already depends on Creative Cloud libraries, desktop Illustrator files, or Adobe collaboration tools may save friction by staying inside Illustrator. Someone starting from scratch may find Affinity Designer 2 or Linearity Curve more economical or easier to approach, depending on the current plan terms.

Best apps for comics, manga, animation, and production work

12. Clip Studio Paint — best for comics, manga, and advanced illustration

Clip Studio Paint is the most production-oriented choice for comic artists. Its toolset includes extensive brush and material libraries, 3D drawing figures, perspective tools, masks, clipping, non-destructive adjustments, comic panels, speech balloons, screen tones, multi-page projects, and professional animation features.

Apple Pencil-specific documentation confirms support for Scribble and Apple Pencil Pro Squeeze. More importantly, the app is built around the structures comic artists actually need: panels, balloons, tones, page projects, and reusable materials. It also supports storyboarding and character illustration when a project does not yet have a final page layout.

Choose it if: you are making manga, webtoons, comics, storyboards, or animation and need production tools beyond a single painting canvas.

Pick the right plan: the EX tier is the relevant choice for multi-page comic functionality and unlimited animation frames. Do not assume that every plan includes those features. For large comic projects, hardware and memory also matter; the App Store listing recommends 6 GB or more of memory for certain comic workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch out for: Clip Studio Paint has more menus, options, and plan distinctions than a casual sketching app. It rewards a production workflow, but can be excessive for someone who only wants to draw occasional studies.

13. Adobe Fresco and ibis Paint X for lighter animation and manga workflows

Although Clip Studio Paint is the specialist recommendation, two other apps deserve consideration for narrower comic or animation needs. Fresco includes animation tools, motion paths, symmetry guides, and time-lapse export, making it suitable for short animated experiments or illustrated motion studies. It is not the same as a full multi-page comic-production environment.

ibis Paint X is attractive for manga-style drawing because of its screen tones, fonts, stabilization, clipping masks, materials, and social tutorials. It is a strong budget-friendly option for individual illustrations and page elements, but artists who need organized multi-page projects and advanced animation should look first at Clip Studio Paint EX.

Concepts — best for infinite-canvas sketching and ideation

Concepts belongs in a different category from painting apps. It is built around an infinite canvas, making it possible to move, resize, and organize visual ideas without being confined to one fixed page. Its manual says it is optimized for pressure- and tilt-sensitive styli such as Apple Pencil.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This makes Concepts useful for brainstorming, storyboards, architecture and product concepts, diagrams, visual notes, composition planning, and exploring several alternatives in one workspace. The open canvas is particularly valuable when the drawing is part of a thinking process rather than the final deliverable.

Choose it if: you need to gather references, notes, thumbnails, diagrams, and multiple visual directions in one expandable space.

Watch out for: Concepts is not the most direct replacement for a traditional finished-painting app. Its main advantage is movable, scalable visual organization, not a huge natural-media brush library or a specialized comic-page pipeline.

Which iPad drawing app should you choose?

Start with the output you need

  • Finished digital paintings, character art, or illustration: start with Procreate. Consider Infinite Painter if brush customization is your priority, or Sketchbook if you want a cleaner interface.
  • A free painting app: start with Adobe Fresco. Remember that some Adobe account or ecosystem features may have separate requirements.
  • Watercolor or traditional-media simulation: choose Tayasui Watercolor & Painting for focused watercolor, Tayasui Sketches for a broader natural-media toolbox, or Art Set 4 for an approachable traditional-media simulation.
  • Logos, icons, branding, posters, or scalable artwork: choose Affinity Designer 2 for a deep vector-and-raster workflow, Linearity Curve for an accessible vector workflow, or Adobe Illustrator if your files and team already live in Creative Cloud.
  • Manga, comics, webtoons, or multi-page projects: choose Clip Studio Paint. Select the EX tier when you need multi-page comic features or unlimited animation frames.
  • Ideas, diagrams, storyboards, and visual planning: choose Concepts for its infinite canvas.
  • Budget manga drawing and a large asset library: try ibis Paint X, especially if screen tones, fonts, materials, and stabilization are important.

Then answer these four practical questions

  1. Do you need raster or vector output? Raster apps are usually the natural choice for painting and textured illustration. Vector apps are better for logos, icons, typography, and artwork that must scale without losing path editability.
  2. Do you need one canvas or a production system? Procreate and painting apps center on individual canvases. Clip Studio Paint is better when panels, balloons, pages, materials, and animation frames are part of the job. Concepts is better when the canvas itself is an expandable planning space.
  3. Do you want a free trial route or a complete paid toolset? Fresco offers a free starting point, while Infinite Painter, Sketchbook, ibis Paint X, and Tayasui Sketches divide features between free and premium tiers in different ways. Paid download and subscription terms change, so compare the current listing rather than relying on an old price.
  4. Which Pencil features does your hardware support? Pressure and tilt are not the same as hover, Squeeze, or Barrel Roll. Buy or choose the iPad and Pencil combination first, then select apps that advertise the features you actually plan to use.

Useful accessories for an iPad drawing setup

Accessories are optional; none is required to use the apps above. The most important purchase is the correct Apple Pencil for your iPad.

Apple Pencil Pro, only when your iPad supports it

If you own a compatible iPad Pro M4 or M5, iPad Air with M2, M3, or M4, or iPad mini with A17 Pro, Apple Pencil Pro is the model to investigate. Its advanced features are only useful when both the iPad and the app support them, so confirm compatibility before ordering.

Model-specific alternatives for other iPads

Owners of other iPad generations may need Apple Pencil USB-C, Apple Pencil 2nd generation, or Apple Pencil 1st generation. These are not interchangeable universal accessories. Check the exact model number of the iPad rather than choosing by appearance or screen size.

Comfort and maintenance accessories

Before you download: pricing, plans, and updates

Drawing apps use several different business models: paid downloads, free versions with optional purchases, subscriptions, premium bundles, and Creative Cloud access. The most important distinctions are:

  • Adobe Fresco: positioned as a free app, but Adobe accounts and connected ecosystem features may affect the experience.
  • Clip Studio Paint: uses plan tiers; EX is the relevant tier for multi-page comic work and unlimited animation frames.
  • Infinite Painter: separates free and Pro features, with meaningful limits in the free tier.
  • Sketchbook: offers a Premium Bundle for premium tools.
  • ibis Paint X: is the ad-supported or free variant where applicable, with in-app purchase details that can change.
  • Tayasui Sketches: offers premium features through in-app purchases or subscriptions.
  • Adobe Illustrator: is oriented around Creative Cloud and subscription-based in-app purchase options.

For the other apps, confirm the current App Store page for the exact price, trial availability, export restrictions, and subscription or purchase terms. Do not assume that an old review or a different regional App Store has the same offer.

Important limitations of these recommendations

The order in this guide is an editorial framework based on advertised feature breadth, workflow fit, Apple Pencil integration, and audience usefulness. It is not a claim that one app is faster, more responsive, or technically superior in every test.

App Store ratings and rankings are volatile. Compatibility can change with an iPadOS or app update. A listing that says Apple Pencil support may mean pressure and tilt, while another may specifically document hover, Scribble, Squeeze, or Barrel Roll. Confirm the feature you need rather than treating all stylus support as equivalent.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

For large files, animation, and multi-page comics, the iPad’s memory and storage can matter as much as the app. Clip Studio Paint’s listing specifically recommends 6 GB or more of memory for certain comic workflows. If you work with many layers, high-resolution canvases, or animation frames, check the app’s current hardware guidance before starting a major project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Apple Pencil Pro for these drawing apps?

No. Most of these apps advertise Apple Pencil support, but the exact model depends on your iPad. Apple Pencil Pro works only with specified newer iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini models. Other iPads may require Apple Pencil USB-C, 2nd generation, or 1st generation. Advanced features such as hover, Squeeze, and Barrel Roll also depend on the hardware and app.

Is Procreate the best drawing app for every iPad artist?

Procreate is the strongest general-purpose choice for many painters and illustrators, but it is raster-first. Affinity Designer 2, Linearity Curve, or Adobe Illustrator are better fits for vector design, Concepts is better for infinite-canvas planning, and Clip Studio Paint is better for multi-page comics and advanced animation.

Which apps in this list are free?

Adobe Fresco is positioned as a free drawing and painting app. Infinite Painter, Sketchbook, ibis Paint X, and Tayasui Sketches also have free or entry-level options, but their premium tools, ads, bundles, subscriptions, or in-app purchases differ. Check the current App Store listing for the exact terms in your region.

Which app is best for manga and comics?

Clip Studio Paint is the strongest specialist choice because it includes comic panels, speech balloons, screen tones, multi-page projects, materials, 3D figures, and animation tools. The EX tier is the relevant plan for multi-page comic functionality and unlimited animation frames. ibis Paint X is a lower-entry-cost alternative for manga-style illustrations and individual pages.

What is the best iPad drawing app for vector art?

Affinity Designer 2 is the strongest mixed vector-and-raster choice. Linearity Curve is an accessible vector alternative with Bezier and node tools, Shape Builder, Boolean operations, artboards, vectorization, and multiple export formats. Adobe Illustrator is the natural choice for artists already invested in Creative Cloud.

Are Art Set 4 and Tayasui Watercolor & Painting professional illustration suites?

No. Both are focused natural-media experiences. Art Set 4 emphasizes realistic oil, watercolor, markers, and other media, while Tayasui Watercolor & Painting specializes in watercolor. They are better for approachable painting and practice than for extensive vector design, multi-page comics, or production-heavy illustration workflows.

The Bottom Line

Start with Procreate for general illustration, Adobe Fresco for a free painting entry point, Concepts for infinite-canvas thinking, Affinity Designer 2 or Linearity Curve for vector design, and Clip Studio Paint for comics and manga. Then verify your exact iPad and Apple Pencil model before buying hardware or relying on advanced features.
