1. Mod Podge wood-slice photo ornament
A pre-drilled wood slice turns almost any portrait into a rustic Christmas keepsake. Trim a photograph to fit the slice, brush decoupage medium onto the wood, smooth the photo down from the center toward the edges, and apply another even coat over the top once the first layer is positioned. Add a ribbon or twine hanger through the hole.
Write the family name, occasion, or year on the back before the ornament is stored. Let the surface dry completely, and avoid placing sealed ornaments directly against tissue paper because the surfaces may stick together. 2. Laser-print photo-transfer wood slice
A transfer gives the image a less “stuck-on” appearance and allows some of the wood grain to remain visible. Choose a flat wood slice and a laser or dry-toner print; an ordinary inkjet print is not interchangeable for the documented process.

- Apply photo-transfer medium according to the product directions.
- Place the printed image face-down on the wood and smooth it firmly.
- Let it dry for about 24 hours.
- Wet the paper and gently rub away the backing until the transferred image is revealed.
- Seal the surface only if the selected product’s instructions recommend it.

3. Oval “home for the holidays” ornament
Photograph the family home, a grandparents’ house, a first apartment, or another place that matters to your family. Print the image, trim it to an oval wood blank, and finish the outside edge with felt, twine, or narrow ribbon. Add a hanging loop and a small year tag.

4. Cookie-cutter picture ornament
Use a star, heart, bell, tree, or gingerbread-person cookie cutter as a shaped frame. Trace the outside or inside of the cutter onto a photo, cut carefully, and attach the picture around the edge with a small amount of glue. Finish it with ribbon and, if desired, a bead or small embellishment on the hanger.
Different cutters can hold different family members or yearly snapshots, creating a coordinated set without making every ornament identical. For a milestone ornament, print several small photos and cut them into consistent strips. Loosely curl or accordion-fold the strips, place them inside a clear fillable ornament, and add ribbon, faux snow, paper confetti, or a name-and-year tag.
The format is ideal for a baby’s monthly milestones, a vacation timeline, a pet’s yearly photos, or a multi-generation family sequence. Look for clear fillable ornaments, choosing plastic rather than glass if that better suits a household with young children or pets. That is a cautious material choice, not a claim that any particular ornament is unbreakable.
6. Double-sided clear photo ornament
Cut two matching or complementary photos to fit inside a clear ornament. Place one image facing each direction so the ornament can be viewed from both sides. Keep important faces away from the edge, and test the paper shape before applying glue or inserting it. The clear photo-ornament instruction sheet documents positioning a circular image through the ornament’s top opening or tab area.
7. Painted popsicle-stick square frame
This is one of the most approachable projects for children, classrooms, and large family craft sessions. Paint eight jumbo craft sticks—or leave them natural—then glue them into a square frame. 9. Pet-face pipe-cleaner ornament
Print a close-up of your dog’s or cat’s face and attach it to a lightweight ornament base. Use pipe cleaners to suggest ears, whiskers, legs, a tail, antlers, or another playful body shape. The design does not need to reproduce a single fixed template: floppy ears, pointed ears, curled tails, and different colors can make the ornament resemble the individual pet.

This is a useful way to coordinate a tree: use the same trim color for every family member, or make a different color for each year. A monogram, painted edge, or small fabric bow adds personality without requiring a specialized transfer technique.
11. Mini photo collage ornament
Arrange several small, well-lit photos on cardstock or thin wood, leaving a narrow, consistent border between images. Seal the collage under decoupage medium or place it behind a simple frame. 12. Add a handwritten year tag to any photo ornament
A year tag turns a one-time craft into a family record. Add the family name, event, location, a short message, or the year to a small cardstock tag and tie it to the hanger instead of gluing it over the photo. This keeps the image unobstructed and makes the tag easier to replace or update.

Print a test before cutting
Make a test sheet first, especially when several photos must fit a small ornament. Check the crop, face placement, brightness, and scale. For tiny ornaments, close-up faces usually read better than distant group scenes. Leave a little extra margin until you confirm the fit.

Decoupage can use a normally printed photograph, provided the paper and chosen medium are compatible with the product instructions. The wood-transfer method described above specifically calls for a laser or dry-toner print. Do not substitute an inkjet print without documentation from the transfer-medium manufacturer.
Allow drying and handle gently
Apply decoupage medium evenly, smooth bubbles outward from the center, and allow the ornament to dry fully before adding hardware or packing it away. Do not assume that a sealer makes a handmade ornament waterproof unless the product label specifically supports that use. Transfer images may show color shifts, visible wood grain, wrinkles, or imperfect edges; those variations are part of the handmade result.
Choose the right blank
- Wood blanks: Suitable for decoupage, transfers, house shapes, and rustic designs. Pre-drilled holes simplify hanging.
- clear fillable ornaments: Best for inserts, photo strips, double-sided pictures, and small collages. Measure the opening and interior before preparing the photo.
- Cardstock or cardboard: Useful for lightweight frames, backing pieces, and year tags.
- Craft sticks: Inexpensive for painted square or house-shaped frames.
- Felt, ribbon, and twine: Useful for edging, hanging loops, and color-coordinated sets.
Hang according to weight

Store finished ornaments carefully
Make sure surfaces are fully dry before packing. Separate sealed or decorated pieces with glassine, parchment, or another non-sticking protective layer rather than pressing them directly against tissue paper. Store fragile clear or glass ornaments in a divided container, and keep small detachable embellishments away from children and pets.

Use hot glue guns, awls, drills, craft knives, wire, glass, and small embellishments only with adult supervision or age-appropriate handling. A project being simple does not automatically make it suitable for unsupervised children.

Can I use an inkjet photo for a wood photo transfer?
Not for the documented transfer method in this guide. That process specifies a laser or dry-toner print. Inkjet prints may be suitable for some decoupage projects, but follow the instructions for the particular transfer medium rather than assuming the methods are interchangeable.
What photo works best for a small ornament?
Use a high-resolution, well-lit image with the subject cropped fairly close. Keep faces and other important details away from the edge, and print a test before cutting the final photo.
How do I protect an original photograph?
