You can create a useful entryway without a separate foyer. Measure the strip beside the door, keep the swing and walking route clear, then build only the functions your household needs: hooks for coats and bags, a shelf for keys or parcels, shoe storage, seating, or a combination. The 13 projects below adapt those functions to narrow, rental, and wall-mounting-free spaces.
#1 Best Overall
- COMPLETE 5-PIECE BRUSH SET FOR EVERY PAINTING TASK — Includes 1 Inch Flat, 1.5 Inch Angle, 2 Inch Flat, 2 Inch Angle Stubby, and 2.5 Inch Angle brush giving you every size professional painters use daily. Get all 5 for less than the price of a single brush from hardware store brands — professional grade performance at a fraction of the cost. Perfect for walls, trim, cabinets, doors, furniture, and detailed cutting-in work on any project.
- ZERO BRISTLE LOSS — GUARANTEED BY PRECISION ADHESIVE BONDING — Every bristle is locked in place with precision-set adhesive that keeps them in the brush — not in your paint job. The coated steel ferrule provides structural support while the adhesive bond ensures clean performance on every stroke. Premium SRT synthetic filaments load more paint and release it evenly for a smooth streak-free finish on walls, ceilings, and trim. Works with latex, oil-based paint, primer, sealer, and wood stain.
- INCLUDES THE ANGLE STUBBY MOST SETS LEAVE OUT — Professional painters know the 2 Inch Angle Stubby is the go-to brush for tight cabinet interiors, window sashes, inside corners, and detailed trim where standard angle brushes are too long. Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
- FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Solid wood handles provide all-day comfort and control for both professional contractors and weekend DIY homeowners tackling interior or exterior painting projects.
- TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.
Plan the zone before choosing a project
A small entryway works best as a deliberate drop zone rather than a collection of furniture. Measure the wall width, available floor depth, door swing, trim, outlets, and the path people use to enter the home. Mark the proposed footprint with painter’s tape for a day so you can test whether shoes, coats, and packages create a bottleneck.
- Need a place to sit? Choose a bench with cubbies or a bench-and-hook combination.
- Need to hang daily items? Use a hook rail, pegboard, or hall tree.
- Need to set things down? Add a small shelf close to the door, positioned so it does not block the handle or circulation.
- Need shoe capacity without floor depth? Favor vertical, wall-mounted, or tip-out storage.
- Cannot drill? Use a freestanding station and check your lease before installing anything fixed. Lease terms and local rules vary, so treat that check as a property requirement rather than legal advice.
The Enterprise Green Communities Aging in Place Design Guidelines (2016) identifies a bench with shoe cubbies as an alternative to a coat closet and describes a shelf near the door as a place for packages that leaves your hands free to open the door. Those are useful functional principles; the dimensions still need to fit your home.
13 small entryway ideas you can build or adapt
1. Bench with open shoe cubbies
Build a sturdy seat over two or more open compartments. Shoes stay at the door, and the bench gives people a place to sit while putting them on. This is the clearest documented alternative to a coat closet for wet coats and shoes in the 2016 design guideline.
- Measure the wall and the depth that can remain outside the walking route.
- Construct a rectangular bench carcass with a seat, vertical dividers, and an open back or a back panel suited to your wall.
- Sand every exposed edge, finish the wood, and anchor the unit if the chosen plan or manufacturer instructions call for it.
- Assign one cubby per person or use baskets to contain small accessories.
Keep the cubbies open if wet footwear needs ventilation. Do not assume a universal load rating for the seat or anchors; capacity depends on the materials, fasteners, wall, and installation.
2. Repurposed bench with labeled baskets
A sound secondhand bench can become an entryway organizer with less cutting than a new build. Slide low baskets beneath it for hats, gloves, pet supplies, or reusable bags. This is a design variation rather than a tested plan, so inspect every joint before relying on it for seating.
- Check that the bench does not rock and that its top is free of splits or loose hardware.
- Measure the opening under the seat and choose baskets that can be pulled out without scraping the wall.
- Add felt pads only where they will not make the bench unstable.
- Label baskets by person or task to prevent the surface becoming a pile of miscellaneous items.
Use a separate hook rail or shelf above it if coats and keys also need a home.
3. Compact hall tree
A hall tree combines a bench, coat hooks, and lower shoe storage in one vertical piece. A published DIY hall-tree plan lists lumber and plywood, coat hooks, pocket screws, nails, wood glue, a cordless drill, a saw, a sander, and painting supplies. Follow the cut list from the specific plan you select; its lumber sizes are not universal entryway standards.

- Confirm the finished width and depth against your taped floor footprint.
- Cut the side panels, seat, shelves, and back according to the chosen plan.
- Dry-fit the parts, then join them with the specified screws, nails, and glue.
- Sand before painting, install hooks at a reachable height, and secure the finished unit as directed by the plan and your wall conditions.
A hall tree is efficient when you need several functions, but it is more involved than a simple rail and shelf. Reserve it for a wall and floor area that can accommodate its full depth.
4. Narrow vertical hall tree
Adapt the hall-tree idea to a tall, slim frame: hooks occupy the upper section, while a shallow shelf or cubby handles shoes and small items below. Narrow-hallway guidance commonly recommends using vertical space and shallow storage, but its suggested clearances are editorial advice, not building-code or engineering requirements.
- Use the narrowest practical side panels and keep the lower storage open enough to retrieve shoes.
- Place the tallest hooks where they can be reached without a step stool.
- Leave the door hardware and light switches unobstructed.
- Test the route with coats hanging before final anchoring.
This format suits a tall wall with little floor depth, provided the unit cannot tip and the attachment matches the wall type.
5. Hook rail with a small shelf
Make a compact landing station from one backer board, several hooks, and a narrow shelf. It handles everyday coats and bags while reserving a surface for keys, mail, or a package waiting to be carried inside.
- Cut and sand a board sized to the usable wall section.
- Mark hook positions so bulky items do not collide with the door or each other.
- Attach the shelf with brackets or a cleat rated for the shelf construction, following the fastener manufacturer’s instructions.
- Mount the board into suitable framing or approved anchors for your wall.
Keep the shelf close enough to the door to be convenient, but outside the swing and the main circulation line.
6. Door-adjacent landing shelf
If hanging storage already exists, build only a small shelf for the items that otherwise land on the floor. The design guideline’s package-landing rationale is practical: a surface near the door can hold a delivery while your hands remain free to open the door.
- Trace the door swing and handle arc on the wall.
- Choose a shelf depth that stays outside that arc and does not narrow the route.
- Use a cleat, brackets, or a freestanding console according to the wall and lease conditions.
- Add a shallow tray or bowl so keys do not migrate across the house.
Because this is a single-function project, it is often the least disruptive option for a very small entrance.

7. Freestanding coat-and-shoe station
Use a ready-made rack as the structural core, or build a freestanding frame with an upper rail, lower shelf, and side supports. It avoids drilling and can be moved when the layout changes. A 2026 editorial guide discusses this type of combined unit as an option for renters and for anyone who does not want wall mounting.
Recommended Free Tools
- Measure the footprint, including the clearance needed to walk around the unit.
- Choose a broad, stable base rather than a tall, top-heavy shape.
- Provide ventilation around shoes and keep wet items off finished flooring.
- Check your lease before placing or modifying a permanent fixture; a freestanding piece may still be subject to property rules.
Product dimensions and prices change, so verify any commercial unit at the time you buy it. The DIY version should be evaluated for stability on your own floor.
8. Shallow tip-out shoe cabinet
A tip-out cabinet stores shoes against the wall with less projection than deep shelves. It is useful where a bench would make the passage feel crowded. Treat suggested cabinet dimensions from narrow-hallway articles as starting points, not verified standards.
- Measure the largest footwear you need to store, including boots.
- Confirm that the cabinet doors can open without hitting the door, trim, or people passing through.
- Build or select a cabinet with ventilation and a secure wall attachment.
- Keep a separate hook or shelf for coats and keys if the cabinet is shoe-only.
Do not overload the hinges or assume the cabinet can support seating unless its construction is explicitly designed for that purpose.
9. Full-height pegboard organizer
A pegboard turns one narrow wall into adjustable vertical storage. This is a design suggestion rather than a researched or tested build, but it is easy to reconfigure as household needs change.

- Install a perimeter frame or spacers so hooks can engage behind the board.
- Arrange hooks for coats, a small shelf for keys, and a lower basket for hats or gloves.
- Reposition accessories until the door opens freely with the heaviest everyday items hanging.
Use hardware appropriate to the wall and the loads you intend to hang. There is no universal safe hook capacity.
10. Floating cubby shelf
Build a row of shallow cubbies that keeps small objects visible without consuming bench depth. Assign one compartment to keys, sunglasses, dog leads, or incoming mail, and reserve the top for a small landing surface.

- Bates paint brushes come in a convenient 6 pieces with 3 flat and 3 angled bristle styles, including (1”, 1.5”, 2”) flat and (1.5”, 2”, 2.5”) angled bristles, perfect for tackling any surface painting or staining job.
- The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
- The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
- These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
- Sketch the cubby count around the actual objects you need to store.
- Cut identical dividers and a top and bottom panel so the box remains square.
- Sand and finish before installing the mounting cleat.
- Attach the cleat to suitable framing or anchors, then place the cubby body over it.
Because the unit projects from the wall, mock up its depth with cardboard and check shoulder and door clearance first.
11. Bench plus separate hook board
Instead of building a full hall tree, pair a simple bench with a slim hook board above it. The separated pieces are easier to move and let you adjust hook height independently from the seat.
- Build or repurpose a bench sized to the shoe area.
- Center the hook board over the bench only if that position does not conflict with the door.
- Use the bench for shoes and the board for the coats used most often.
- Add a small shelf to the board only if packages and keys need a landing surface.
This combination gives you the seating function of a cubby bench without committing to one large cabinet.
12. Under-bench rolling bins
Turn the void beneath a bench into pull-out storage with low boxes or bins on casters. It is a design variation for seasonal shoes, sports gear, or cleaning supplies that do not need to remain visible.
- Measure the opening at several points; floors and benches are not always perfectly square.
- Build boxes with handles and enough ventilation for footwear.
- Fit low casters that will not raise the bin into the seat structure.
- Keep the bins light enough to pull out without shifting the bench.
Use an open cubby for wet shoes and reserve enclosed bins for dry items that can tolerate reduced airflow.
13. Mirror with a slim ledge
Add a mirror above a narrow ledge for a final glance before leaving. The mirror is an optional style and convenience element, not a functional requirement established by the entryway design guideline.

If the entrance is extremely tight, omit the mirror and use the wall area for storage that solves a daily problem.

Materials and tools for a basic wood build
The hall-tree plan’s material list is a practical starting point for several projects, but buy only what your selected design requires:
- Lumber or plywood for the frame, shelves, cleats, and back panels
- Coat hooks and shelf brackets or a cleat system
- Pocket screws, nails, and wood glue where the plan specifies them
- A cordless drill and bits
- A saw suited to the cuts in your plan
- A sander and sandpaper
- Primer, paint, brushes, or other finishing supplies
Use the plan’s cut list for its own design. Lumber thickness, joint type, and fastener length change when the span, load, or wall attachment changes. The sources do not establish a universal load rating for hooks, shelves, benches, or anchors.
Installation and safety checks
Wall attachment
Identify whether you are fastening into studs, masonry, plaster, or drywall, then choose hardware rated for that substrate and follow its instructions. A hook that holds a light bag on one wall may fail under a loaded backpack on another. Test every mounted piece gradually rather than hanging the heaviest load immediately.

Door and circulation clearance
Open the door fully, walk in carrying bags, and remove shoes while the proposed furniture is in place. Editorial narrow-hallway guidance recommends keeping circulation clear, but it does not provide an authoritative universal clearance number. Your door geometry and household traffic determine the practical limit.
Moisture and cleaning
Wet coats and shoes need a surface that can tolerate drips and be wiped clean. Leave airflow around footwear, use a washable tray, and protect wood with an appropriate finish. Do not trap damp shoes in an unventilated box.
Stability
Check that benches sit flat, freestanding racks do not rock, and tall units cannot tip. Follow the chosen plan’s anchoring directions and the hardware manufacturer’s limits. Children should not climb on entryway furniture.
Choose the right project for your entry
- Smallest footprint: a hook rail, landing shelf, or shallow tip-out cabinet.
- Most functions in one build: a compact hall tree.
- Best for sitting while removing shoes: a bench with cubbies or a bench-and-hook combination.
- No-drill preference: a stable freestanding coat-and-shoe station.
- Changing storage needs: a pegboard or movable baskets under a bench.
- Packages and keys are the main problem: a door-adjacent shelf or floating cubby.
Start with one clearly defined problem instead of filling every inch. A small entryway feels larger when each object has a designated place and the walking route stays open.
