They are not a verified historical list of 13 named coops or ready-to-build plans. Treat each as an inspiration brief, then size and detail it for your flock, climate, predators and local rules.
Before choosing an outrageous shape, size the ordinary functions
Oregon State University Extension gives two different floor-space targets: at least 3 square feet per bird when the birds have access to a run or other outdoor area, and 8 to 10 square feet per bird when they do not. Measure usable interior floor area rather than counting nest boxes, feed storage or inaccessible corners. A dramatic exterior cannot compensate for overcrowding.

Ventilation must exchange air and remove moisture and gases without creating a draft across the roost. OSU says passive ventilation is adequate for most backyard coops, using openings at windows, gables, eaves or the roof. In unusually warm or humid periods, a fan can help if it does not blow directly on the birds. Insulation is not a substitute for eliminating drafts and dampness.
Secure birds inside at night. OSU recommends enclosing the run with mesh, netting or wire, including overhead protection where appropriate, and burying fencing 6 inches to 1 foot to deter digging predators. Adapt the construction to the predators in your area; a fox, raccoon, snake and raptor test a coop in different ways.
Every showpiece still needs conventional poultry hardware. Allow 5 to 10 inches of roost length per bird and approximately one nest box for every four birds; OSU describes nest boxes of about 12 inches in each direction. Keep perches above the floor but below the highest ventilated openings, and position nests where eggs can be collected without entering a cramped or unstable structure.

Plan maintenance before you decorate. OSU describes weekly cleaning, while poultry housing guidance stresses access to nests, perches, feeders and waterers. Remove loose or ragged wire, protruding nails and sharp edges that can injure birds or people. If a person cannot reach every dusty ledge, the form is too clever for its own good.

1. Pasture ark
University of Wisconsin Extension describes a pasture poultry ark as an A-frame shed combined with a traditional chicken tractor: a floorless coop and pen moved daily. Emphasize the nautical metaphor with a curved-looking ridge, painted “hull” panels or a prow-shaped entrance, but keep the frame light enough to move without dragging birds or tearing the ground. The floorless base must still prevent escapes and keep mesh tight to the soil. A daily-move concept fails if its wheels, handles or latches require two people while the flock is exposed.
2. Rolling A-frame tractor
Use the same movable principle with deliberately oversized wheels, bright fenders or a triangular silhouette visible from the road. The outrageous feature is visual scale, not a higher stocking density. Check that wheels clear toes, that the frame cannot tip on a slope and that every opening is latched before moving. Provide a shaded section and inspect the new location for poisonous plants, standing water and predator tracks.

3. Walk-in gallery coop
Commercial plan pages show compact houses and a walk-in plan with an attached covered run; treat any advertised dimensions or capacity as vendor claims that must be verified. A gallery version can use a full-height door, interior viewing panels and a chore-friendly central aisle. Keep transparent panels limited or shaded so the house does not become a greenhouse. Put feeders, waterers, perches and nests where they can be reached without crawling beneath elevated platforms.
4. Vertical color cube
A compact plan can become a bold, stacked cube with contrasting panels, exterior nest access and a painted geometric facade. Calculate the birds’ usable floor area inside the footprint; shelves and decorative towers do not count unless birds can safely use them. Vent openings should be high and protected from rain, while the lower edge needs a rodent-resistant seal. A narrow footprint is practical only when the attached run supplies the needed outdoor access.
5. Hoop-pen tunnel
Poultry housing guidance points to hoop-pen construction as a recognized category. Make it outrageous with alternating colored hoops, a translucent ridge strip or a tunnel that visually frames the garden. Curved roofs shed some rain, but they can trap heat and may need shade cloth in hot weather. In snow country, design for local loads rather than copying a light seasonal frame. Close both ends at night and protect the lower perimeter from digging.

6. Miniature barn house
Louisiana State University AgCenter permanent-house plans are another documented starting point. Enlarge the visual language—an exaggerated gable, cupola-like vent or porch—without creating inaccessible cavities. The roofline must not block cross-ventilation, and a person should be able to remove bedding from every corner. Use the porch for human shelter and egg collection, not as a substitute for secure nighttime housing.
7. Reclaimed-material collage
OSU notes that coops can use new or recycled wood, plastic and concrete. Assemble a collage of compatible reclaimed doors, shutters and siding, but reject any piece with peeling toxic coatings, rot, embedded glass or unstable fasteners. Seal gaps where rodents could enter and cover every sharp edge. Mixed materials expand and contract differently, so inspect joints after the first wet and cold seasons.
8. Recycled-plastic pod
A rounded plastic shell can look like a spacecraft while being easy to wash. Plastic also carries risks: dark colors can overheat, smooth interiors can collect condensation and some panels become brittle in cold weather. Add shaded, rain-protected ventilation high on opposite sides, provide a dry textured floor and test the interior temperature during the hottest part of the day before moving birds in.

9. Concrete bunker
Concrete is listed by OSU among possible coop materials and can create a fortress-like visual. Its mass is durable, but a sealed bunker becomes humid and hot without deliberate ventilation. Slope or drain the floor so wash water leaves the building, finish interior surfaces so bedding does not cling to rough voids and avoid underground rooms that cannot be inspected quickly. The run still needs mesh and a buried perimeter; heavy walls do not stop a predator entering through an open door.
10. Bucket-box outpost
OSU gives a five-gallon bucket as a creative alternative nest box. Mount a row of identical buckets under a protected overhang, paint the exteriors in a bold pattern and provide a hinged or removable access panel for collecting eggs. Buckets must be firmly supported, free of sharp cut edges and positioned so hens cannot perch on their rims and foul the nests. Keep the openings shaded and dry, and provide enough boxes for the flock rather than treating the display as a single communal nest.

A highly customized plan can become a fairytale facade with murals, false windows and theatrical trim. Keep decoration outside the birds’ reach, use coatings that are fully cured and suitable for the substrate, and avoid tiny ledges that hold wet litter. False windows should never replace real ventilation. Sketch the cleaning route before adding trim: if a brush, scraper or hand cannot reach it, simplify the ornament.
12. Modular run constellation
Instead of one unusual shell, connect a conventional night house to several smaller run modules, creating a village-like composition. The poultry.extension.org housing material points readers toward separate runs, pasture arks and permanent houses as distinct approaches. Treat every connector as part of the predator boundary: a gap beneath a tunnel, an unlatched service door or a weak roof panel defeats the entire constellation. Modular sections are useful when one area must be closed for cleaning or reseeding.
13. Night-lockdown pavilion
Make the daytime run the visual centerpiece: a dramatic canopy, sculptural shade wall or pavilion surrounding a more restrained sleeping house. The design succeeds only if the flock can be counted and secured quickly at dusk. Use a door that closes positively, inspect the threshold for digging and keep the control point accessible in bad weather. The pavilion offers daytime character; the enclosed house supplies the actual night protection.

How to turn an outrageous sketch into a buildable plan
- Count birds and calculate usable area. Apply the OSU floor-space targets according to whether the flock has run or outdoor access. Add service clearance for a person, but do not count it as bird floor area.
- Draw the air path. Mark high and low openings, then check that rain cannot blow directly onto roosts. Use passive openings first; consider a fan only for heat or humidity and aim it away from birds.
- Draw the predator envelope. Show mesh on sides and, where needed, overhead; mark the buried edge and every door, hatch and connector. Specify a nightly closing routine.
- Place roosts and nests. Reserve the required roost length and nest-box count before adding decorative platforms. Keep nests calm, shaded and reachable from outside or through a clear aisle.
- Plan the cleaning path. Draw a hand, scraper and bucket moving through the house. Provide removable panels or full-size doors where the shape creates dead corners.
- Stress-test materials. Check recycled components for rot, toxic finishes, splinters and sharp fasteners. Consider rain, ultraviolet exposure, snow, heat and the maintenance schedule for every finish.
- Confirm local rules. Setbacks, flock limits, required permits and restrictions on roosters vary by municipality. Verify them before purchasing materials.
Questions to ask before building
- How predator-proof is it? Treat that community question literally: test doors, roof mesh, buried edges, corners and nighttime procedures rather than judging security by appearance.
- Can I collect eggs without entering? Exterior nest access is convenient, but it must not create a weak hinge, gap or rain path.
- Will it stay cool and dry? Dark shells, plastic pods, concrete walls and translucent roofs all need climate-specific checks.
- Can one person maintain it? If weekly cleaning, water filling or a broken latch requires dismantling the sculpture, choose a simpler form.
- Is the capacity documented? Commercial plans may advertise dimensions or flock numbers, but those are provider claims. Recalculate usable space and verify construction details yourself.
