You can make an ordinary room distinctive without specialist equipment or an elaborate renovation. These 13 paint ideas range from measured stripes and geometric blocks to soft ombré blends, murals, and tactile finishes. Choose according to the edge you want—crisp, blended, or irregular—then match the project to your tolerance for measuring, masking, and repeated work.

Most projects need wall paint, brushes, a roller and covers, a tray, a tape measure, a level or straightedge, chalk or pencil, and painter’s or masking tape. A stencil and stencil brush or foam roller help with repeat patterns; a projector can help transfer a complex mural layout.

Prepare the room before choosing a pattern

Start with a sound, clean base

Repair holes, remove dust and grease, and allow the wall to dry before painting. A smooth, uniform base makes crisp lines easier to seal and helps blended or textured finishes look intentional. If the existing coating is loose, scraping and sanding may be necessary, but old paint changes the safety requirements.

Plan the design at wall scale

Use a tape measure and chalk or pencil to mark major divisions. A level or straightedge keeps horizons, grids, and diagonals from drifting. For a mural, sketch directly on the wall with chalk or pencil; a projector can help transfer a complicated drawing. Test colors and sheen combinations on sample boards or an inconspicuous area so the relationship is visible under the room’s actual light.

Assemble the basic kit

  • Wall paint, brushes, a roller, roller covers, and a tray
  • Tape measure, level or straightedge, and chalk or pencil
  • Low-tack painter’s or masking tape for temporary edges
  • For stencils: a stencil, stencil brush or foam roller, and extra tape

Take lead-paint precautions

Scraping, sanding, or removing old paint can release toxic lead dust. Sherwin-Williams warns that exposure can cause serious illness, with children especially vulnerable, and advises pregnant women to avoid exposure. Before disturbing an older coating, follow current local lead-safety guidance. The manufacturer recommends a NIOSH-approved respirator, a HEPA vacuum, and a wet mop, plus advice from the National Lead Information Hotline or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

13 weirdly awesome ways to paint a room

1. Horizontal or vertical stripes

Stripes are the most architectural option in the list. Sherwin-Williams says horizontal stripes can make a room appear more spacious, while vertical stripes can make a ceiling appear higher; treat those as design guidance, not guaranteed optical results.

Measure and mark each band, checking the marks with a level or straightedge. Apply low-tack tape just outside the line, press the edge firmly, and paint over the tape edge so the base color helps seal it. The manufacturer recommends bands 4–12 inches wide. Let a new base coat dry for at least four hours or overnight before adding the stripes. Horizontal bands emphasize width; vertical bands emphasize height, so orient them toward the room quality you want to accent.

2. Color-blocked wall

Divide one wall into two or more large color fields for a bold focal point. The simplest version is a horizontal split, but a vertical division or an offset boundary can make the composition feel less expected.

Measure the boundary, confirm it with a level, and mask one side before painting the other. Keep the palette disciplined: a strong contrast reads as graphic, while related colors make the block feel quieter. Because the fields are large, uneven edges are conspicuous; spend more time on layout and tape adhesion than on adding extra colors.

3. Two-tone geometric shapes

Triangles, overlapping circles, arcs, and hexagons turn a wall into a graphic mural. Dulux identifies these as mural ideas and recommends sketching the design, using a level for straight lines, and masking where necessary.

Draw the composition first, then decide which shapes sit in front when forms overlap. Straight-sided shapes need a level or straightedge; curved shapes need a steady hand or a carefully made guide. Two colors are enough for a two-tone effect, while a restrained third color can separate overlapping forms. Keep the design on one focal wall if the room already contains patterned furniture or textiles.

4. Tone-on-tone horizon lines

A horizon-like band gives you the structure of color blocking with a gentler contrast. Sherwin-Williams lists horizon-line projects using related colors or different sheens, so the change can be noticed through tone, reflection, or both.

Mark a clean horizontal line at a deliberate height—such as behind a desk, headboard, or picture rail—and mask it as you would a stripe. Choose colors close in value for a quiet transition, or pair one color in two sheens for a barely-there shift. This approach works across a full wall without making the pattern the room’s only focal point.

5. Ombré wall

An ombré wall graduates from light to dark instead of stopping at a hard boundary. Dulux’s method uses adjacent bands of two colors and blends across their meeting area while the paint is still fresh.

Plan the gradient from top to bottom or side to side, then mix or place neighboring colors in bands. Work in a sequence that keeps the adjoining edges wet; blend across each meeting area with a clean brush or roller before it begins to set. Continuous timing matters more than perfect band widths, so organize the paint and tools before starting. A subtle gradient suits a bedroom or reading area, while a stronger light-to-dark shift creates a dramatic backdrop.

6. Painted ombré arch

An ombré arch combines a curved architectural shape with graduated color. Sherwin-Williams lists an ombré arch mural project as a way to frame a reading corner, desk, or bed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treat the arch as a focal-area composition rather than a full-wall finish. Establish the curve carefully, keep the base shape symmetrical, and plan where the lightest and darkest portions will sit in relation to the furniture. Because the listed project supports the concept but does not provide a complete step sequence, adapt the blending method used for an ombré wall and make a small test first. The arch’s scale should leave enough surrounding wall for its outline to read clearly.

7. Mountain mural

A mountain mural supplies a simple landscape without requiring realistic drawing. Sketch overlapping peaks in chalk or pencil, then paint each shape in a restrained neutral palette or a more colorful sequence. Dulux notes that murals can be sketched directly on the wall, and Sherwin-Williams lists a mountain-mural guide.

Paint the rear range first and place nearer peaks over it so the overlaps remain legible. Varying the peak heights prevents a repetitive skyline. A limited palette keeps the mural calm; brighter, separated colors make it playful. Reserve the largest uninterrupted wall for the scene, and use a projector only when the design is too complex to transfer comfortably by hand.

8. Checkerboard wall

A checkerboard is a measured grid with alternating colors. Sherwin-Williams lists a checkerboard-wall project, and the defining requirement is consistency: small errors compound as rows and columns continue across the wall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the available width and height, decide the square size, and mark a complete grid before filling any squares. Use a level to keep lines true and mask alternate cells. Paint in a sequence that lets adjoining areas dry enough to avoid lifting or smearing tape. A two-color scheme is the classic choice; closely related colors make the grid less dominant. Check the pattern from across the room as you work, not only from directly in front of the wall.

9. Diamond pattern

Intersecting diagonal lines create a diamond pattern that can read traditional, playful, or contemporary depending on scale and color. Sherwin-Williams lists a diamond-pattern project among its wall ideas.

Begin with a measured reference line and mark diagonals at consistent intervals. Mask alternate shapes, paint, allow the surface to become sufficiently dry for the next tape placement, and repeat. Large diamonds need fewer intersections and read boldly; small diamonds require more repeated work and make alignment more visible. Keep furniture away from the wall while the pattern is being laid out so reference marks remain accessible.

10. Polka-dot wall

Polka dots can be evenly spaced, loosely scattered, or concentrated around a focal area. Sherwin-Williams lists a polka-dot project. A reusable template or stencil is a practical editorial option when you want matching circles; freehand dots produce a more relaxed result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the dot diameter and spacing before painting. A single accent color over a quiet base is easy to coordinate, while several dot colors make the wall more energetic. If using a template, secure it, apply a small amount of paint, and lift it straight away to reduce smears. Start with a test arrangement so the pattern does not become denser than the room can support.

11. Sponge texture

Sponge painting creates irregular mottling over a dry base coat. Sherwin-Williams describes dabbing a sponge with a second color and varying pressure and angle to avoid a mechanically repeated texture.

Load the sponge lightly, dab off excess paint, and work in overlapping touches. Change pressure and rotate the sponge as you move so the marks do not form obvious rows. A close color pair gives quiet depth; a stronger contrast makes the texture decorative. Keep a consistent amount of base color showing, especially near corners where repeated dabbing can otherwise become heavy.

12. Rag rolling

Rag rolling leaves a different irregular texture from sponging. Sherwin-Williams’ method rolls a clean rag into a loose cylinder, applies paint, and rolls it in overlapping passes over a base coat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a rag that is clean and lint-free, keep the roll loose enough to create variation, and overlap passes while the added paint is workable. Reload sparingly so the texture stays broken rather than becoming a solid second coat. Rag rolling is useful when you want movement across a broad wall without drawing a geometric layout; maintain a consistent direction and overlap pattern around corners.

13. Stenciled repeat pattern

Stenciling adds a repeatable motif—one of the most controllable ways to cover a wall with a custom pattern. Sherwin-Williams calls it a versatile technique for adding unique patterns and designs, while Dulux includes stencils among mural materials.

Secure the stencil with painter’s tape. Dab paint through the openings with a stencil brush or foam roller, using a light load to limit seepage, then lift the stencil and reposition it for the next repeat. Keep a registration mark or a measured spacing plan so rows stay aligned. A single repeated motif can form a border or focal panel; repeating it across the wall creates a full pattern. Clean the stencil periodically so dried paint does not distort the edges.

Choose the right idea for your room

Pick stripes, blocks, horizons, checkerboards, or diamonds when you want crisp architecture and are willing to measure and mask. Choose an ombré wall, ombré arch, sponge texture, or rag rolling when the finish depends more on timing and hand movement than perfectly straight edges. Murals, geometric shapes, polka dots, and stencils are best when the wall itself should become the artwork.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a first project, limit the number of colors and confine a complex design to one focal wall. For a full-room treatment, repeat the same base color elsewhere and let only one wall carry the pattern. Whatever you choose, make the layout decisions before opening the paint: the most convincing results come from intentional spacing, compatible colors, and edges that match the character of the design.
