To get better results in Midjourney V8.1, select or confirm V8.1 where available, describe the image you want in concrete terms, and choose controls and references that address a specific need. V8.1 is no longer the current default: Midjourney made V8.2 the default on July 24, 2026, so check model compatibility before following version-specific steps.
These tips focus on a repeatable workflow: prompt, control, reference, refine, and repeat. Midjourney says V8.1 reads prompts better and holds small details more effectively; those are vendor claims, not independently established comparisons.
Prompt fundamentals
- Start with the image itself. Name the subject and describe the scene in ordinary, concrete language.
- Add only details that matter. Consider medium, environment, lighting, color, mood, and composition when they affect the result; they are a checklist, not required fields for every prompt.
- Use visible descriptions. Replace vague words such as “nice” with details a viewer could see, such as soft window light, pale curtains, or a sparsely furnished room.
- Make the main subject clear. A specific noun gives the prompt a stronger starting point than atmosphere alone.
- Describe action when it matters. A subject doing something can give the image a clearer pose or narrative.
- Specify the setting when it affects the image. Location and environment can establish context, scale, and depth.
- Name the visual treatment deliberately. If useful, say whether you want a photograph, painting, collage, illustration, or another medium.
- Describe composition when it matters. Terms such as close-up, full-body, centered, or wide view can help establish framing.
- Give lighting and palette a purpose. Specify the light source or a restrained color relationship when it affects mood, hierarchy, or readability.
- Remove redundant adjectives. Stacked near-synonyms add little direction. Prefer a few distinct decisions.
- Keep an initial prompt easy to diagnose. Start compact, then add detail after you identify what the image needs.
- Test one meaningful change at a time. Holding other choices steady makes it easier to judge the effect of a wording or control change; this is a practical workflow, not a guarantee of identical results.
- Save successful prompts and settings. Record the model, parameters, aspect ratio, references, and relevant weights with the prompt.
Prompt syntax and controls
- Write the description before the parameters. Keep the desired image in ordinary language, then place controls at the end.
- Use clean parameter syntax. Midjourney’s parameter documentation says to separate parameters from prompt text with a space and use the documented syntax. Check each parameter against the selected model.
- Use aspect ratio to shape the frame. Choose a portrait, landscape, or square canvas based on the intended placement rather than relying on a later crop to solve every composition problem.
- Try Raw when you want less default styling. Midjourney lists Raw as a control that can give prompt text more influence; verify its availability and behavior for V8.1.
- Adjust Stylize for the balance you want. It affects artistic influence. Test changes deliberately, since a setting that suits an expressive image may not suit a literal one.
- Use a seed as an experimental aid. A seed can support controlled comparisons, but should not be treated as a permanent creative fingerprint across changing models and settings.
- Avoid changing many controls at once. If you simultaneously change model, prompt, references, and parameters, it becomes difficult to tell what influenced the result.
- Check resolution claims in context. Midjourney’s parameter documentation lists V8.1 standard output at 1024px and HD at 2048px. These are documented dimensions, not a promise that HD will make every image better.
Choose the right reference or tool
Different inputs guide different aspects of an image. Midjourney says references inspire new creations rather than copying their sources exactly. Use the option that matches what you want to influence.

- Use an Image Prompt for content influence. Choose it when a source should inform composition, color, or broad visual content.
- Adjust V8.1 image weight deliberately. Midjourney documents a default weight of 1 and a range of 0–3; increasing the weight increases the source image’s influence.
- Use a Style Reference for aesthetic influence. Keep the written prompt focused on the subject and scene you want, rather than asking the model to reproduce objects from the style image.
- Separate subject identity from visual treatment. Decide whether each reference should guide content, composition, or style so inputs do not compete.
- Use Personalization as preference guidance, not a new model. Midjourney says selecting more images can improve how well a profile fits a user’s preferences; it does not mean the profile changes the underlying model.
- Check the active profile when results feel inconsistent. Confirm both the chosen model and profile compatibility before changing the prompt.
Refine and repeat
- Identify one specific problem before editing. Decide whether the issue is a local detail, framing, or a broader content change.
- Use the Editor for targeted work. With images made using the Edit Model, the Editor supports inpainting and outpainting; the model also supports written changes and up to four reference images.
- Make one edit, then review it. Check whether the change solved the intended problem before making another revision.
- Keep the selected model in mind. The Edit Model supports V8.1 and V8.2, but version-specific features and compatibility can change. Consult Midjourney’s current documentation before relying on a particular workflow.
- Keep records for repeatable projects. Save the prompt, model, parameters, references, profile, and edit history for approved work.
- Review final details at the intended size. Inspect visible text and small or complex areas before using the image in a finished design.
- Finish exact typography in a design workflow. Do not treat generated wording as guaranteed to be exact; use a suitable layout or image-editing application when copy must be precise.
Common questions about Midjourney V8.1
Is V8.1 the current Midjourney default?
No. Midjourney’s version history says V8.1 became the default on June 10, 2026, and V8.2 became the default on July 24, 2026. Select or confirm V8.1 where available and check current model compatibility.
How should I choose between an Image Prompt and a Style Reference?
Use an Image Prompt when you want a source image to influence content, composition, or color. Use a Style Reference when you want to guide visual qualities such as palette, medium, texture, or lighting. Neither guarantees an exact copy of the source.

What is the V8.1 image-weight range?
Midjourney’s Image Prompts documentation lists a default image weight of 1 and a range of 0–3 for V8.1. Increasing the weight increases the source image’s influence.
Can I edit V8.1 images with the Editor?
Midjourney’s Edit Model documentation lists V8.1 as compatible. The Edit Model supports written changes and up to four reference images, while the Editor supports inpainting and outpainting. Check current documentation for feature availability and workflow details.

Does a V7 Personalization profile work with V8.1?
Midjourney says a Global V7 Personalization profile works with V8.1 and V8.2. A V8 profile does not work with V7.
Does Midjourney copy reference images exactly?
No. Midjourney describes Image Prompts and references as inspiration for new creations, not exact copying. Use them to guide the result, then review and refine it.
