- Open Gemini and enter a prompt in the image-generation experience available to your account. Features and access can change, so check the current interface.
- Paste a prompt starter and replace the bracketed details with your own subject, setting, style, or palette.
- Specify a composition and intended format or aspect ratio when those choices matter.
- To refine your own rough drawing, upload it and say which shapes, pose, or other features to keep and what details to add.
- Generate or edit the image, then make focused follow-up requests—such as changing only the background or lighting.
- Check the finished image for unwanted details and make sure you have permission to use any reference image before downloading or sharing it.
Google Gemini Apps Help recommends beginning with words such as “draw,” “generate,” or “create,” then describing what you want to see. A reliable Gemini sketch-prompt formula
Use the elements that matter to your image; a prompt does not have to be long. Google Product Manager Naina Raisinghani wrote in an August 26, 2025 article that “You can get great results with Gemini from simple one or two-sentence inputs.”
Try this flexible structure:
Create [subject] doing [action] in [setting]. Use [style or medium], [composition], and [format or aspect ratio]; preserve [features to keep] and add [specific details].
Give Gemini a specific subject and action rather than relying on a style label alone. Add framing, setting, and visual style when they are important to the result. For a rough-drawing transformation, identify both the features to preserve and the details to add.

Google’s API documentation describes uploading a rough sketch and asking Gemini to preserve selected features while adding details or changing its finish. - Clutter: “Remove background clutter and increase the empty space around the subject.”
- Reference consistency: “Use the uploaded reference and preserve the character’s face, hairstyle, clothing, and proportions.”
- Aspect ratio: “Reframe this as a vertical composition without cropping the main subject.”
When consistency across scenes matters, use a clear reference image and repeat the important traits. Google DeepMind’s prompting guide recommends clear, named references for maintaining a subject’s look.
How to make sketch art easier to share
- Choose one clear focal point that reads at a glance.
- Use a contrast between the subject and background that suits the intended mood.
- Tell Gemini the intended image format or aspect ratio when framing matters.
- Leave space for any caption you plan to add later.
- For exact typography, add text in a design tool after generating the image and check it carefully.
- Consider showing your own drawing, the refinement, and the final version as a process sequence.
- Use original characters and concepts rather than asking for exact copies of protected characters or logos.
“Shareable” and “scroll-stopping” describe creative goals, not measured outcomes. The sources reviewed for this guide provide no evidence that a specific prompt guarantees virality or higher engagement.
Gemini image options and practical limits
Gemini’s image-generation options and access rules can change. The current Gemini Apps Help page identifies Nano Banana 2 as the image-generation option for requests with Gemini set to Flash or Pro, Lite for Flash-Lite, and Pro redo as a paid-subscriber feature for additional detail. Check the current interface and help page for availability and eligibility before relying on a particular option. The help page also says image editing is unavailable to users under 18.

Google says generated images can be downloaded at full size or exported to Docs. The research for this guide did not verify that generated images are public by default or that a shared link is automatically created, so do not assume that generating or downloading an image makes it public.
For portraits and transformations, use images you own or have permission to use. Respect other people’s privacy and copyright rights. Google warns that images may be removed when its systems detect a possible policy violation; follow the current product terms and policies.
