These 15 designer-recommended taupe paints range from pale gray-beiges to deeper, warmer shades. They are a useful shortlist, not a universal ranking: a taupe’s brown, gray, red, yellow, green, violet, or magenta undertone can shift with the room’s light and nearby colors.

15 taupe paint colors designers recommend

The selections below come from designer recommendations published by MyDomaine. The descriptions reflect those designers’ observations and examples; they are not results of comparative paint testing.

  1. Farrow & Ball Stony Ground

Designer Ginny Macdonald describes taupe as difficult to pin down and calls Stony Ground a middle-ground neutral. It may suit a room where you want a balanced taupe rather than an especially pale or deep effect.

  2. Benjamin Moore Vintage Taupe

Designer Jennifer Vaquero says this shade works with many accent colors, making it a candidate when you want flexibility with furnishings and decor.

  4. Farrow & Ball Elephant’s Breath

  5. Sherwin-Williams Eider White

Vaquero presents Eider White as a light, almost-gray taupe. Consider it when you want a subtle taupe cast rather than a visibly brown wall color.

  6. Farrow & Ball School House White

This is a lighter option that sits between taupe and cream, according to the MyDomaine article.

MyDomaine frames White Dove as a warm, luminous neutral and a very light option in this group. It is for someone seeking a near-white effect rather than a deeper taupe.

  10. Behr Creamy Mushroom

The article shows Creamy Mushroom as a door accent in a black, white, and gray bathroom—a useful example of using taupe as a contrasting detail rather than covering every wall.

Eugenia Triandos describes Repose Gray as a warm gray that coordinates with browns and grays.

  12. Benjamin Moore Sandy Hook Gray

Diana Rose uses Sandy Hook Gray with Revere Pewter for a layered, tone-on-tone bathroom. The pairing illustrates how two related neutrals can create variation without a sharp contrast.

  13. Sherwin-Williams Gossamer Veil

Triandos describes Gossamer Veil as a pale, warm taupe with a green undertone. Check it alongside the room’s fixed finishes, since green can become more or less noticeable as the light changes.

  14. Behr Smokestack

How to choose a taupe for your room

Taupe blends brown and gray, but the balance varies. Benjamin Moore explains that warm taupes often lean red or yellow, while cooler taupes tend toward gray or violet; light and neighboring colors also affect how a paint reads. See its taupe color guidance.

Start with lightness and depth

Decide whether you want a pale near-neutral, a middle-depth wall color, or a darker shade for contrast or layering. In this list, Eider White, School House White, White Dove, and Gossamer Veil are described as light options; Smokestack is mid-tone; Copley Gray is identified as a darker companion. Those descriptions are qualitative, not a standardized lightness ranking.

Look for the undertone that suits your finishes

Compare the sample with flooring, cabinetry, stone, brick, upholstery, and any other finishes that will remain in the room. The recommendations include gray, green, plum, magenta, and warm brown-beige directions. Macdonald’s broader point is that taupe can add depth when used well; Triandos describes it as a cross between gray and beige, with some shades closer to gray and others more yellow.

Test in the actual room

Paint samples on more than one wall and view them at different times of day. Benjamin Moore specifically advises testing taupe on multiple walls and observing it throughout the day because it can skew warm or cool depending on the space. Screen and printed depictions may not match the actual paint color.

More taupe references beyond the 15

Benjamin Moore’s catalog labels Weimaraner AF-155, Cotswold AF-150, Pashmina AF-100, Smokey Taupe 983, River Reflections 1552, and Sparrow AF-720 as popular taupes. It also identifies Driftwood 2107-40, Weimaraner AF-155, and Pashmina AF-100 as homeowner favorites. These are supplemental catalog references, not additions to the 15 designer selections; see the Benjamin Moore taupe catalog.

Sherwin-Williams named Poised Taupe SW 6039 its 2017 Color of the Year, describing it as a combination of gray’s familiarity and brown’s warmth. Its Liveable Luxe palette includes Temperate Taupe SW 6037 and Emerging Taupe SW 6045. For another designer perspective, Jo Lane of See Your Place calls Farrow & Ball Skimming Stone a light gray-taupe and a blend of lightness, warmth, saturation, and tone; it is context, not one of the 15 picks.
