A portable generator can keep essential equipment running during an outage, but a wrong placement, connection, or refueling decision can kill. The safest baseline is simple: operate it outdoors, more than 20 feet from the home and other buildings, with exhaust directed away from windows, doors, and vents. Never use it inside or in a partly enclosed space, and never connect it to a wall outlet.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is colorless and odorless. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says it can reach deadly concentrations within minutes in confined spaces and can remain for hours after a generator is turned off. CPSC reported an average of nearly 100 U.S. deaths per year from portable-generator CO poisoning in its March 16, 2026 safety release. The 15 mistakes below cover the decisions that prevent CO poisoning, electrocution, fire, and serious burns.

1. Running the generator indoors
A home, apartment, basement, crawlspace, shed, or any other interior room is an immediate CO hazard. A running engine produces exhaust continuously; opening a door after the generator starts does not make the space safe.
Set the generator completely outdoors before starting it. Choose a stable location where exhaust can disperse freely and where people cannot accidentally enter the area. If you cannot create a genuinely outdoor location that meets the distance and weather requirements, do not operate the unit.

2. Running it in a garage, carport, shed, or other partly enclosed area
“Outside” does not include an attached or detached garage, basement entrance, crawlspace, shed, porch, or carport. CDC guidance specifically prohibits garage use even when doors and windows are open. Roofs, walls, vehicles, stored materials, and nearby structures can trap exhaust.
Move the generator into open air, not merely closer to an opening. A garage door, awning, or carport roof is not a ventilation system.

3. Assuming open doors, windows, or fans provide enough ventilation
Fans and open windows can move contaminated air into the building instead of removing the danger. Airflow changes with wind, temperature, and the building’s pressure, so you cannot reliably dilute CO to a safe level.
Do not use a fan, open window, screen door, or “generator tent” as permission to operate near the building. The correction is physical separation in open air, with exhaust pointed away from all openings.
4. Placing the generator less than 20 feet from the building
Measure the distance from the generator to the home or other building before you connect a load. CPSC advises at least 20 feet; CDC specifies more than 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents. Use the stricter interpretation: keep it beyond 20 feet from those openings, not just from the nearest wall.
Account for the entire exhaust path and for wind that may carry fumes toward the structure. Do not shorten the distance because a cord is inconvenient; use a longer, suitable outdoor cord instead.

5. Pointing exhaust toward a window, door, or vent
Even a generator positioned at the correct distance can send CO into the building if its exhaust faces an opening. Before starting, identify windows, exterior doors, furnace vents, dryer vents, and other air intakes on every side of the building.
Turn the exhaust away from those openings and recheck it if the wind changes or you reposition the unit. Never aim the outlet under an overhang or toward a neighboring building.
6. Operating without working carbon-monoxide alarms
Generator placement is the primary protection; alarms are a backup, not a license to operate unsafely. Install CO alarms according to the alarm maker’s instructions on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Use battery-operated alarms or units with battery backup so an outage does not disable protection.
Keep alarms in the occupied building even when the generator is far outside. They provide warning if exhaust enters unexpectedly or if another fuel-burning appliance develops a problem.

Press each alarm’s test button monthly and replace batteries or the alarm itself according to its manufacturer’s instructions. A silent unit may have a dead battery, expired sensor, or fault indicator that is easy to overlook.
If a CO alarm sounds, leave immediately and call 911 from outside. Do not silence it and go back inside to search for the source. Firefighters or other qualified responders can determine when re-entry is safe.

8. Using a damaged, undersized, or indoor-rated extension cord
Inspect the entire cord before every use. Do not use one with cuts, crushed insulation, exposed conductors, melted sections, loose connections, or a missing prong. CPSC recommends outdoor-rated, heavy-duty cords with three-prong plugs.
The cord’s wattage rating must exceed the combined wattage of every appliance connected to it. Add the loads before plugging in; motors and compressors may draw more power during startup. Use enough length to keep the generator outdoors and away from openings. If a cord passes through a window or doorway, prevent the opening from pinching or crushing it, and keep the cord from becoming a trip hazard.

9. Backfeeding through a wall outlet
Never plug the generator into a household wall receptacle to energize the home’s wiring. CPSC calls this practice “backfeeding” and warns that it can send electricity onto utility lines, endangering workers and neighbors, while bypassing some household circuit protection.
Connect appliances directly to the generator with suitable cords, or have a qualified electrician install an approved transfer switch before an outage. A transfer switch separates the home from the utility supply; a homemade cord or outlet connection does not.
10. Operating in rain or wet conditions without following the manual
Water increases the risk of shock and electrocution. Read the generator’s instructions for wet-weather operation before an emergency occurs. CPSC guidance describes an open, canopy-like arrangement on a dry surface; its May 27, 2026 release notes that some manuals may require a rated noncombustible generator tent or waiting until rain or snow has passed.
There is no single shelter rule for every model. Keep the unit outdoors, never place it near a building opening to escape rain, and follow the specific manufacturer’s clearance and grounding instructions. If the manual does not permit operation in the conditions you face, switch it off and wait.

11. Touching the generator with wet hands
Wet skin lowers the body’s resistance to electricity. Dry your hands and stand on a dry surface before touching controls, plugs, or the frame. Do not handle connections while standing in puddles or on saturated ground.
If the generator or cord becomes wet, follow the manual’s shutdown and inspection procedure. Do not improvise by moving a running unit indoors or under an unsafe enclosure.
12. Refueling while the engine is running or still hot
Turn the generator off and let the engine cool before removing the fuel cap. Gasoline spilled onto hot engine parts can ignite, producing a flash fire and severe burns.
Refuel outdoors, away from flames, sparks, cigarettes, pilot lights, and appliances that burn fuel. Wipe up spills before restarting, and keep the fuel container closed when it is not in use. If the engine needs fuel during a long outage, plan a shutdown and cooling period rather than topping up while it runs.

13. Storing fuel inside living areas
Do not keep gasoline or other flammable fuel in bedrooms, living rooms, basements, or other occupied areas. Store it outside living areas, away from fuel-burning appliances and ignition sources, in properly labeled, non-glass safety containers. Follow the fuel type, quantity limits, and storage rules that apply where you live.
Never transfer fuel into drink bottles, unlabeled jars, or glass containers. Keep containers upright and secured against tipping, and inspect them for damage before use.

14. Skipping maintenance or disregarding the owner’s manual
A generator that starts is not necessarily safe or ready for a long outage. Follow the unit’s labels, warnings, and owner’s manual for inspection, oil, filters, spark plugs, fuel handling, grounding, load limits, and storage. CPSC recommends regular maintenance, but no single service interval applies to every generator.
Before storm season, run the checks specified by the manual, inspect cords and plugs, verify that safety shutoffs and alarms operate, and make sure the unit can be moved to a compliant outdoor location. Record service dates so a multi-day outage does not become the first time you discover a problem.
15. Failing to prepare for CO symptoms or an alarm
Headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, confusion, and unusual tiredness can indicate CO exposure. If anyone feels sick while a generator is operating, get everyone to fresh air immediately. Do not delay to turn off the generator, open windows, collect belongings, or investigate the source.
Once outside, call 911 when symptoms are present or an alarm has sounded, and tell responders that a generator may be involved. Do not re-enter until emergency personnel say it is safe. CPSC Acting Chairman Peter Feldman warned in the agency’s May 27, 2026 release: “Hurricanes and severe storms can turn deadly long after the wind and rain stop.” Treat every alarm or symptom as an emergency, even after the weather has cleared.
A safer setup checklist before you start
- Choose an open-air location more than 20 feet from windows, doors, vents, and buildings.
- Point exhaust away from every opening and check the direction again when wind changes.
- Confirm CO alarms are installed on each level and outside sleeping areas; test them monthly.
- Inspect outdoor-rated, three-prong heavy-duty cords and confirm their ratings exceed the connected load.
- Place the generator on a stable, dry surface and follow the model’s wet-weather instructions.
- Keep fuel outside living areas in labeled, non-glass safety containers.
- Have a shutdown plan for refueling, and keep emergency contacts accessible from outside.
Safety features worth checking when buying a portable generator
CPSC recommends considering a portable generator with a CO shutoff feature. Its May 27, 2026 guidance says models certified to PGMA G300-2023 and UL 2201-2023 include CO safety technologies; it also says UL 2201-certified models reduce CO emissions in addition to providing a shutoff feature.
These features reduce risk but do not make indoor use, close placement, missing alarms, or unsafe connections acceptable. Verify the certification and shutoff claims in the current model documentation, and continue to follow the placement and operating instructions.
