For a typical interior room with water-based paint, 8- to 9-foot ceilings, mostly sound walls and a few small repairs, you need a controlled set of 16 tools—not a cart full of gadgets. The recurring core is a brush, roller frame and cover, one paint-holding system, painter’s tape, and floor or furniture protection. Preparation tools, reach equipment and specialty accessories depend on the surface and room.

The lists below separate a practical starter kit from purchases that usually duplicate another tool or solve a problem this project does not have. Brush and roller choices should still follow the paint chemistry and surface texture guidance from Sherwin-Williams.

The 16 tools to put in your kit

Buy the first five for almost every room. Add the conditional items after inspecting the walls, measuring the reach and deciding how you will hold the paint.

1. Angled trim brush, about 2 to 2½ inches

An angled brush gives control when cutting in at ceilings, corners and trim. Sherwin-Williams identifies a 2–2½-inch brush as a useful size for this work, while the best bristle material still depends on the paint and surface. See its DIY supply list.

Pro Grade Paint Brushes, Paint Brush Set for Walls, Trim & Stain, 5-Piece
  • COMPLETE 5-PIECE BRUSH SET FOR EVERY PAINTING TASK — Includes 1 Inch Flat, 1.5 Inch Angle, 2 Inch Flat, 2 Inch Angle Stubby, and 2.5 Inch Angle brush giving you every size professional painters use daily. Get all 5 for less than the price of a single brush from hardware store brands — professional grade performance at a fraction of the cost. Perfect for walls, trim, cabinets, doors, furniture, and detailed cutting-in work on any project.
  • ZERO BRISTLE LOSS — GUARANTEED BY PRECISION ADHESIVE BONDING — Every bristle is locked in place with precision-set adhesive that keeps them in the brush — not in your paint job. The coated steel ferrule provides structural support while the adhesive bond ensures clean performance on every stroke. Premium SRT synthetic filaments load more paint and release it evenly for a smooth streak-free finish on walls, ceilings, and trim. Works with latex, oil-based paint, primer, sealer, and wood stain.
  • INCLUDES THE ANGLE STUBBY MOST SETS LEAVE OUT — Professional painters know the 2 Inch Angle Stubby is the go-to brush for tight cabinet interiors, window sashes, inside corners, and detailed trim where standard angle brushes are too long. Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
  • FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Solid wood handles provide all-day comfort and control for both professional contractors and weekend DIY homeowners tackling interior or exterior painting projects.
  • TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

2. Roller frame

Choose a frame that accepts the cover width you plan to use. A standard frame is the basic tool for covering broad wall areas efficiently; Benjamin Moore includes a roller frame in its house-painting checklist.

3. Roller covers

Cover fabric must suit the paint: synthetic, natural or blended materials are used for different paint types. Pile depth must suit the texture—shorter pile for smoother surfaces and deeper pile for more texture. Sherwin-Williams explains both choices in its brush-and-roller guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Paint tray

A tray works well with a standard roller setup and makes it easy to load and roll off excess paint. Select a size that matches your roller rather than buying an oversized contractor tray for one room.

5. Tray liners

Liners speed color changes and cleanup. Benjamin Moore lists tray liners among its essential supplies. Use a liner with a tray; it is not a second paint-holding method.

6. Bucket and roller grid

A bucket with a grid is an alternative to a tray, not an automatic companion purchase. Behr lists both workflows in its interior paint-supplies guide. A bucket can be convenient when moving around a larger room, while a tray is often simpler for a small project.

8. Canvas drop cloth

Cover floors and furniture before opening paint. Sherwin-Williams describes canvas cloths as absorbent and less prone to sliding than slick coverings; its guidance is at Interior & Exterior DIY Painting Techniques.

9. Cleaning rags

Keep rags available for drips, wiping edges and cleaning tools. They are part of Sherwin-Williams’ basic supply recommendation and reduce the chance that a small spill becomes a dried repair.

10. Roller extension pole

An extension pole lets you roll high walls and ceilings from the floor or from a safer working position. It is useful when reach, rather than surface condition, is the limiting factor. Sherwin-Williams specifically recommends extension-pole use for high areas in its painting techniques guidance.

11. Appropriately sized ladder

Use a ladder when a brush or roller pole cannot provide controlled reach. Match the ladder type and size to the task, keep it on a stable, unobstructed surface and avoid stretching sideways. Sherwin-Williams includes ladder selection with its basic supplies at Five DIY Paint Supplies You Need.

12. Patching material

Buy patching compound only where holes, dents or cracks need filling. It is a preparation supply, not a requirement for every freshly painted wall; Behr includes it in its condition-dependent checklist.

13. Putty knife

Use a putty knife to press patching material into defects and scrape it level. A small knife is adequate for nail holes; broader damage may require a wider blade.

14. Sandpaper

Sand repaired areas smooth after they dry, and lightly smooth rough spots that would show through paint. Do not sand an intact wall automatically; dust control and the existing coating condition matter.

15. Scraper

A scraper removes loose paint, flaking edges and surface debris before you patch or repaint. Stop and investigate if scraping reveals widespread failure, moisture damage or a potentially hazardous older coating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

16. Small paint-cutting container

A small hand-held container keeps a manageable amount of paint beside you while cutting in. It prevents repeatedly carrying a full tray to corners and trim. Keep it compatible with the paint and clean it before the coating dries.

How to choose the right version of each tool

Match the brush to paint and control

Water-based and oil-based coatings do not always perform best with the same bristle type. Start with the coating label and the manufacturer’s brush guidance, then choose the 2–2½-inch angled size when control at edges is the priority.

Match roller fabric and pile to the wall

On smooth drywall, a short pile generally leaves less texture. More pronounced texture needs a deeper pile so the cover reaches the surface valleys. The paint’s chemistry also affects whether synthetic, natural or blended fabric is appropriate; the Sherwin-Williams comparison is the authoritative selection reference here: How to Choose Paint Brushes & Rollers.

Choose one paint-loading workflow

Workflow Best fit What to buy
Tray Small to medium room, conventional roller work Tray, liner, frame and cover
Bucket and grid Moving around a larger area or preferring a bucket system Bucket, grid, frame and cover

Behr’s checklist presents tray and bucket/grid as available options, not a mandate to own both: How-to Choose Interior Paint Supplies.

Plan reach before buying access equipment

For ordinary 8- to 9-foot walls, a roller pole may cover most of the field while a ladder handles detailed trim. Taller rooms, stairwells and ceilings can require both a longer pole and a correctly rated ladder. Never use a substitute such as a chair or stacked box.

Inspect before buying preparation tools

Run your hand and a bright light over the wall. Sound, smooth paint may need cleaning and dust removal only. Holes call for patching material and a putty knife; rough or peeling areas call for sandpaper and a scraper before primer or paint.

Seven purchases you usually don’t need for this project

These are “don’t buy” recommendations for the stated one-room scenario, not universal bans. A different surface, coating or building can change the decision.

1. Both a tray system and a bucket/grid system

Choose the workflow you will actually use. Buying both duplicates the paint-loading job and adds cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Several roller pile depths before checking the wall

Buy the pile that matches your measured texture and paint. Extra covers are useful for a color change or replacement, but a collection of incompatible naps is wasted money.

3. A paint sprayer for one interior room

Spraying demands extensive masking and setup and is not supported by the basic manufacturer checklists for ordinary wall rolling. It becomes a separate choice for large, repeat or specialty projects.

4. A specialty edging gadget

For a normal room, an angled brush, tape and a steady cutting-in technique cover the edge work. An edging tool adds a specialized interface without replacing the need for surface protection.

5. An oversized ladder when a pole supplies the reach

If the roller pole reaches the wall safely and only low trim needs detail, a large ladder is unnecessary. Buy or rent the correct ladder when the task genuinely requires it, rather than choosing by height alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. A full sanding and scraping kit for intact walls

Preparation tools should follow visible defects. Sound walls do not become better because every square foot was aggressively sanded; unnecessary abrasion creates dust and can damage the existing finish.

7. Disposable plastic floor sheets as your default protection

For a room where slip resistance and absorption matter, a reusable canvas drop cloth is the more useful first purchase. Plastic can still have a role for unusual spill or contamination risks, but it should not replace stable floor protection.

A buying sequence that prevents waste

  1. Inspect the surface and note texture, holes, peeling paint and ceiling height.
  2. Choose the paint-compatible brush and roller fabric, then select pile depth for the texture.
  3. Pick either a tray-and-liner workflow or a bucket-and-grid workflow.
  4. Buy tape, canvas protection and rags before paint is opened.
  5. Add a pole or ladder only after measuring the highest work area.
  6. Purchase patching material, putty knife, sandpaper and scraper only for defects you actually found.

Quick checklist before checkout

  • Brush size and bristles match the coating and edge work.
  • Roller frame fits the chosen cover width.
  • Cover fabric and pile match paint chemistry and wall texture.
  • You selected one paint-holding system, not two by default.
  • Floor, furniture and adjacent trim have a protection plan.
  • Reach equipment suits the room without unsafe stretching.
  • Preparation tools correspond to real holes, roughness or loose paint.
