The fastest way to create a recognizable Purge-inspired Halloween costume is to make the mask the focal point, then build the rest with dark everyday clothes, a hood, wig, themed outfit, or makeup. Good Housekeeping’s Marisa LaScala writes that “The mask really does most of the work,” especially when it has illuminated X-shaped eyes (Good Housekeeping, updated July 24, 2023). 17 DIY Purge Halloween costume ideas
1. Light-up mask with dark casual clothes
Start with a light-up Purge-style mask and wear a black hoodie, jeans, boots, or other dark basics. The mask supplies the strongest visual signal, so this is a practical last-minute option. Search for Purge LED mask when comparing retail examples; listings and quality can change.
2. Paper-plate mask
Cut eye openings in a sturdy paper plate, draw an ominous face, and attach elastic or ribbon. Add black, red, or white paint after the base dries. This follows the paper-plate concept described by Purge Culture; it is a craft idea, not an independently tested tutorial.

3. Painted cardboard mask
Trace a mask shape onto thin cardboard, cut it out, and decorate it with dark paint, symbols, exaggerated teeth, or an uneven expression. Punch two side holes for a tie or elastic. Keep the cardboard away from rain and flames.
4. Bandana face covering
Fold a red or black bandana into a face covering and pair it with a hoodie, jacket, and gloves. Add painted symbols to a separate accessory rather than applying wet paint directly to fabric you need to breathe through. A costume bandana is not protective equipment.
5. Decorated blank or hockey-style mask
Use a plain costume mask or an old hockey-style mask as a base. Paint cracks, lettering, drips, or a high-contrast grin, then let every coating dry before wearing it. Purge Culture lists blank-mask decoration as a DIY direction.

6. Glow-accent mask
Turn an ordinary mask into a nighttime version with glow-in-the-dark paint or glow tape around the eyes, mouth, or edges. Test the decoration in low light before Halloween and keep the wearer’s actual sightlines clear.
7. Painted-smile face look
Skip a physical mask and use face paint to create a stylized, unnerving smile. Outline the design with cosmetic-grade products, avoid the eyes and lips, and remove it with the product maker’s directions. This works with black clothing or a simple jacket.
8. Hood-and-mask silhouette
Combine any handmade or light-up mask with a deep hood, oversized sweatshirt, or wig. Keep the hood loose enough for peripheral vision and hearing. The added silhouette makes a basic mask look more deliberate without requiring a full costume.

9. Casual masked group
For a group, have everyone wear ordinary dark clothing but give each person a different mask design: grin, skull, symbols, or painted eyes. Coordinated mask-and-outfit categories are also presented by Purge Culture’s group costume collection.
10. LED group variations
Give each participant a light-up mask while varying the eye shape, decoration, or light color. Retail pages show LED masks as a category, but the available sources do not independently compare comfort, brightness, durability, or battery life.

11. Uncle Sam-inspired Purge look
Build a patriotic interpretation with a red, white, and blue jacket or shirt, dark trousers, and an Uncle Sam-style mask or hat. Retail categories include Uncle Sam-themed options, while Purge Culture names an Uncle Sam mask (Purge Culture). Treat this as an inspired costume direction, not a claim of exact film wardrobe accuracy.

12. Statue of Liberty-inspired look
Use a green or teal dress, robe, or draped fabric with a simple crown, then add a horror mask or painted face. Commercial costume pages list Statue of Liberty-related directions; combine pieces you own rather than assuming a specific screen design.
13. Cowboy villain
Wear a denim shirt, vest, boots, and cowboy hat, then add scary makeup, a mask, or both. Good Housekeeping’s roundup specifically points to cowboy styling and notes that some villains rely on makeup instead of a mask (Good Housekeeping).
14. Half-face skeleton mask
Use a half-face skeleton mask with black clothes, a long coat, or a hood. Because part of the face remains uncovered, this is a useful compromise for someone who dislikes a full-face covering. Check that the mask does not obstruct the uncovered eye or restrict breathing.

15. DIY masquerade mask
Decorate a plain masquerade mask with matte black paint, metallic accents, warning symbols, or an asymmetrical design. Attach ribbon securely and wear it with a dark shirt or formal jacket for a more theatrical Purge interpretation.
16. Makeup-first horror costume
Makeup can carry the entire concept: create hollow eyes, a smeared grin, or distressed wounds with cosmetic products, then wear ordinary dark clothing. This is the best route for people who want the Purge mood without plastic over the face. Patch-test unfamiliar makeup and keep products away from irritated skin.
17. Mix-and-match group characters
