Lens flare textures, overlays, and brushes can add a deliberate burst of light or soft bokeh to an image, but they are not the only way to create the effect. Capture flare through a camera lens, generate it with Photoshop’s Lens Flare filter, or composite a prepared asset. Choose based on the look and control you need—and check the file format, compatibility, and license before downloading a pack.
Three ways to add lens flare
Capture it in-camera
When bright light enters a camera lens, the resulting flare depends on the optical system and shooting conditions. This can produce a natural variation that a static graphic overlay does not physically reproduce. Optical flare can also be unwanted: depending on the image, it may reduce contrast or distract from the subject. A technical paper from the Max-Planck-Institut für Informatik describes a physically based approach to reproducing lens-system flare effects: Physically-Based Real-Time Lens Flare Rendering.
Generate it with a software filter
Photoshop includes a Lens Flare render filter, so a downloadable pack is optional. Adobe describes lens flare as a creative effect that can illuminate photos with a starburst or soft bokeh look. Its filter reference says the effect simulates refraction of bright light shining into a camera lens; filter compatibility varies with document bit depth. Composite an asset
A prepared lens flare overlay or template is a graphic you place over an image; a brush is a tool for painting flare marks into a document. Neither should be assumed to behave like actual light passing through the camera’s lens. Asset listings use terms such as overlays, brushes, and graphics, but the precise file type, included content, and supported software differ from item to item.

Create a flare in Photoshop without downloading a texture
Adobe’s documented recipe uses a gray layer and the Overlay blend mode so the filter effect sits above the photo without replacing its pixels:
- Open the photo in Photoshop and create a new layer.
- Fill the new layer with 50% gray.
- Set that layer’s blend mode to Overlay.
- Choose Filter > Render > Lens Flare, position the flare, and confirm.
For another route, Adobe documents a Lens Flare quick action with controls for brightness and lens type. Adobe notes that this quick action is unavailable on layers with a Smart Filter. See Add lens flare to your photos and Adobe’s lens flare photography guide.

Choose an overlay, template, or brush
There is no single best format for every project. Compare the actual asset details rather than relying on a product title or preview image.

Blend light assets into the image
For a light graphic on a black background, Adobe explains that Lighten blend modes can make the black areas disappear in the composite, which is useful when blending light subject matter into a photo. The best blend mode depends on the asset and the underlying image: do not assume Screen or Overlay is right for every file. Adobe’s example of the Photoshop Lens Flare filter uses a 50% gray layer set to Overlay, while its guidance on blending light graphics discusses Lighten modes. - Appearance and placement: Decide whether you need a sharp starburst, a soft glow, bokeh, or a brush you can apply in selected spots. Check whether the preview shows the effect over black, transparency, or another background.
- Resolution and output: Match the asset’s dimensions to the intended image and final output. Enlarging a small raster graphic can soften it; a product’s stated pixel dimensions are not a universal quality standard.
- Editability and compatibility: Confirm the file format and application support. A Photoshop PSDT template, a brush file, and a flat overlay are different workflows, not interchangeable labels.
- License scope: Read the current license terms for the intended use, including any restrictions relevant to commercial projects. A marketplace or stock listing is not a substitute for checking its item-specific terms.
One Adobe Stock listing illustrates why item-level checks matter: Pixelbuddha Studio’s “Lens Flare Overlays” is listed as a Photoshop PSDT template with RGB color, 10 design options, dimensions of 3000 × 3000 pixels, a file size of 48.01 MB, and an Enhanced license type. These are details for that listing, not specifications shared by all lens flare textures, and listings can change. Verify the current details and license on the Adobe Stock asset page.

Adobe’s Photoshop stock workflow lets users search for and preview stock assets, place them in a document, and license them. Adobe says licensing replaces watermarked instances in open documents with the high-resolution licensed version. Follow the current Adobe Photoshop stock-image instructions and review the asset’s license before using it.
