The easiest way to customize IKEA furniture is to start with one specific model and one practical result: more storage, a work surface, a display, mobility, or a finish that suits your room. Painting and replacing handles are approachable first projects; built-ins and movable units require cutting, brackets, fasteners and a deliberate anti-tip plan. Plan the wall and the finished weight before drilling. IKEA identifies tipping or falling hazards for the IVAR and EKET examples cited here. Select screws and plugs for the actual wall material, follow the product’s anchoring points and do not treat a generic anchor size as universally safe. A castor-equipped unit still needs a way to remain stable when parked or opened.
Materials also determine which finishes will work. IKEA describes IVAR as untreated solid pine that accepts paint, stain, drilling and screws. EKET is made from particleboard, fiberboard and paper foil and uses a suspension rail, so it should not be treated like unfinished wood. On IKEA UK’s IVAR inspiration page, the company warns that modifications preventing resale or the original use can remove commercial guarantees and the right to return; that statement is specific to the UK page, so check the terms in your market.

18 IKEA furniture hacks to customize a room
1. Paint an IVAR cabinet in one saturated color
Use the untreated pine IVAR cabinet as a forgiving first project. Remove the doors and hardware, lightly sand, clean the dust and apply a furniture primer only if your chosen paint system calls for it. Two thin coats reduce runs around hinges and edges. Reinstall the original hardware or fit new pulls after the paint cures. This is a finish change, so the cabinet’s footprint and intended storage remain familiar. For a warmer, wood-forward look, test stain on an inconspicuous area before coating the whole cabinet. Sand evenly, wipe away dust, apply stain in the direction of the grain and protect it with a compatible clear finish. Stain changes color but does not make the cabinet waterproof or stronger. Keep the doors supported while working and follow the original wall-anchoring instructions.

3. Turn an IVAR shelf into a rolling storage cart
The Spanish IVAR project is a useful reference for a mobile version: it lists an IVAR two-section shelf, six 50 mm castors, pine lengths, knobs, handles, wood screws, an electric drill, white paint, a brush and masking tape. The build adds wood extensions, drills for the fasteners and attaches the castors before fitting the decorative hardware. Read the complete sequence at IKEA Spain’s IVAR shelf instructions. The same page recommends anchoring wall shelves and shows a wire-and-bracket arrangement for the rolling example; retain an equivalent tether or other safe anti-tip solution rather than assuming wheels make the unit safe.
4. Make an IVAR cabinet read as an armoire
Use a tall arrangement of IVAR cabinets as clothing, linen or pantry storage. Paint the exterior and install a coordinated pair of handles; inside, add only fittings that leave the doors and shelves operating as designed. Measure door swing against nearby walls before committing to the location. Because this alters the appearance without changing the basic cabinet, it is less demanding than a built-in, but the cabinet still needs the supplied anchoring method.
5. Create an IVAR dollhouse or toy display
IKEA UK shows an IVAR cabinet adapted as a dollhouse. Paint simple rooms, add removable paper or thin trim and use the shelves for figures and accessories. Avoid heavy permanent additions to doors or shelves, and keep small parts away from very young children. Secure the cabinet to the wall exactly as the manual specifies; a playroom does not remove the tipping risk.
6. Use a two-tone IVAR console for a graphic finish
Mask a horizontal band, contrasting doors or an interior compartment and apply two compatible furniture colors. Replacement knobs provide a second visual change without cutting wood. Keep tape off uncured paint and remove it while the final coat is still slightly soft to reduce peeling. This idea is appropriate when you want a visible transformation but no change to storage capacity or mobility.

7. Build a BILLY library wall
Ideal Home’s example combines three BILLY bookcases with wall brackets, MDF, trim, wood glue and paint to create a built-in appearance. Treat it as a more involved secondary example, not an IKEA installation plan. Level the cases, attach each one to suitable wall structure, then use MDF and trim to close deliberate gaps. 8. Give BILLY a colored or patterned back
Paint the removable-looking back area, or line it with a carefully measured paper, to make books and objects stand out. Work before loading the shelves and keep adhesive away from fixing points and ventilation gaps. This is a surface treatment rather than a structural change, so it suits renters who can reverse the finish more easily than a trim-built wall.
9. Span a desk between two BILLY towers
Place two BILLY units as side towers and add a separate worktop between them for a compact office. Measure the clear span, provide brackets or another support designed for the actual wall and top, and leave room for doors, skirting and chair movement. Do not assume the bookcases alone can carry a desktop or a person leaning on it. Anchor both towers and test the assembled surface before placing equipment.
10. Add castors to an EKET cube
Ideal Home describes fitting RILL castors to an EKET cube for mobile storage. Confirm that the castor plate, screws and base construction are compatible with your exact EKET article before drilling. Keep the center of gravity low, lock or block the wheels when the unit is in use and load it gradually. Any alteration can affect stability, so this is an intermediate project rather than a simple clip-on accessory.

11. Mount one EKET cube as a wall gallery
The U.S. EKET wall-mounted listing includes a suspension rail and states that maximum load depends on wall material. Install the rail level, use screws and plugs selected for your wall and engage the unit fully before loading it. The product page also requires secure anchoring: EKET wall-mounted shelving details. Display lightweight objects unless the local listing gives a suitable, clearly understood load limit.
12. Arrange several EKET units in a staggered display
Use multiple cubes at different heights to frame art, books or small plants. Draw the layout on paper first, mark every rail or fixing point and install each module independently; a shared visual arrangement is not a shared structural support. Leave enough clearance to open doors and clean behind the units. Because EKET materials are foil-covered board rather than untreated pine, use the supplied mounting system instead of relying on improvised screws in the panel.
13. Turn KALLAX into a cane-front bar cabinet
Ideal Home’s KALLAX example adds legs, wood-plank doors, cane webbing and hinges. Cane softens the grid while doors hide bottles or glassware. Cut and secure the webbing with the method appropriate to your chosen frame, pre-drill hinge locations and support the unit on a stable base. This is a creator’s project, not a standardized KALLAX accessory or tested load-bearing design; anchor the finished cabinet and keep heavy glass low.

Fit selected cubbies with doors or bins and place a worktop above the unit. Use hinges and catches suited to the door material, protect the top from wet paint and provide independent support if the worktop overhangs. Store dense supplies in the lowest compartments. The result adds a work surface while preserving the cube organization, but the top must not be treated as a seat.

15. Build a KALLAX entry bench with baskets
Choose a KALLAX orientation that gives comfortable seat height only after measuring the base, legs and cushion together. Add baskets for shoes and bags, then anchor the unit so pulling a basket cannot move it. Use a cushion that can be removed for cleaning. Verify that the exact configuration is suitable for sitting; IKEA’s cube shelving is not automatically a bench simply because a cushion fits.
16. Use the IVAR folding table for a compact desk
The U.S. IVAR shelving combination with folding table is documented at 35 inches wide and 29 1/2 inches high. It is a ready-made way to gain a work surface without inventing a hinge system. Confirm those dimensions against your local listing, assemble the shelves and table according to the manual and anchor the combination. 17. Use IVAR shelving as a room divider
Position open IVAR sections perpendicular to a wall to separate a workspace from a living area. Add a painted back panel or trim only after deciding where the structure will be braced. A freestanding divider has a larger tipping risk than a wall-backed shelf, so use brackets, feet or another method approved for the exact configuration. Keep passageways clear and avoid loading one side heavily enough to pull the unit over.

18. Assemble an EKET media console
Combine EKET cubes on a low plinth or compatible legs, leave cable routes behind the electronics and anchor the arrangement where the product instructions require. Keep ventilation openings clear and place heavier equipment in the lowest modules. If you add doors, confirm hinge clearance and do not drill through suspension-rail hardware. Treat the console as a coordinated layout of individual units: each cube and the base must remain stable on its own.
