In 2025, the art calendar brought together a major commercial fair in Switzerland and curator-led biennials across Sharjah, Liverpool and São Paulo. Their different formats and themes offer a useful snapshot of the year, not a complete list or ranking of its exhibitions. One calendar detail matters: Venice’s major 2025 international exhibition was devoted to architecture, not contemporary art.
Major art exhibitions in 2025 at a glance
| Event | Format and dates | Focus | Reported scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sharjah Biennial 16 | Multi-location biennial, February 6–June 15, 2025 | to carry; an open-ended proposition about what people carry and how they respond to the places and cultures they inhabit | Not stated on the Sharjah Art Foundation event page |
| Liverpool Biennial 2025 | City biennial, June 7–September 14, 2025 | BEDROCK; Liverpool’s geology and the idea of social foundations | 30 artists and collectives, according to the organizer |
| Art Basel, Basel | Commercial art fair, June 19–22, 2025; preview days June 17–18 | International gallery presentations, including the Unlimited sector and the public Parcours exhibition | Art Basel reported 289 galleries from 42 countries and territories, and 88,000 attendees over preview and public days |
| 36th Bienal de São Paulo | International biennial; opened September 6, 2025, with its program continuing into January 2026 | Nem todo viandante anda estradas – Da humanidade como prática (“Not every wanderer walks roads – Of humanity as practice”) | Not stated on the Fundação Bienal page |
| Venice’s 19th International Architecture Exhibition | Architecture exhibition, May 10–November 23, 2025 | Architecture, not the Venice International Art Exhibition | Not stated in the official 2025 calendar |
These figures measure different things: gallery representation, attendance and participating artists are not interchangeable indicators of an event’s reach or artistic importance. Dates and counts above come from the respective organizers’ event pages, calendars or releases.
What happened in the art world in 2025?
Sharjah Biennial 16: art across the emirate
Sharjah Art Foundation presented its 16th biennial under the title to carry, from February 6 to June 15. Rather than being confined to a single venue, the program extended across Sharjah City and locations including Al Hamriyah, Al Dhaid, Kalba and Al Madam. The title’s open-ended framing invited reflection on what people carry and how they respond to the places and cultures they inhabit.
Liverpool Biennial: place as a foundation
The 13th Liverpool Biennial, titled BEDROCK, ran from June 7 to September 14. Curated by Marie-Anne McQuay, it brought together 30 artists and collectives. The theme drew on Liverpool’s sandstone geography while also using “bedrock” as a metaphor for social foundations. McQuay described the city’s geological foundations and psyche as starting points for the conversations, with invited artists bringing their own definitions of the title.

Art Basel: the commercial fair model
Art Basel’s 55th Basel edition took place June 19–22, with preview days on June 17–18. Its guide listed 289 galleries from 42 countries and territories, 67 large-scale works and performances in Unlimited, and a Parcours public exhibition themed “Second Nature.” The fair also introduced the Art Basel Awards in Basel: 36 medalists were honored at a ceremony on June 19.
Art Basel reported 88,000 attendees across preview and public days. The organizer also described sales as strong across market segments; that is the fair’s own characterization, not an independent assessment of the art market. Its director, Maike Cruse, called the edition evidence of the global art market’s “enduring strength, resilience, and international reach”—an organizer’s assessment rather than a year-wide finding.

São Paulo: humanity as a practice
The 36th Bienal de São Paulo opened on September 6 under the title Nem todo viandante anda estradas – Da humanidade como prática. The Fundação Bienal related the exhibition’s proposition to Conceição Evaristo’s poem “Da calma e do silêncio,” and described listening, encounter, negotiation and respect as foundations of humanity. The program continued into January 2026, so the edition began in 2025 but did not take place entirely within that calendar year.

La Biennale di Venezia’s official 2025 calendar listed the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, running May 10–November 23, alongside theater, dance, film and music festivals. It did not list a contemporary-art International Art Exhibition for that year. Venice is therefore relevant to a 2025 art-calendar overview as an architecture event, but it should not be described as the Venice art biennale.

How these events differed
- Format: Art Basel was a commercial fair centered on galleries and sales; Sharjah and Liverpool were public, geographically distributed biennials; São Paulo was a large international biennial.
- Geography and context: The events spanned Switzerland, the Gulf region, the United Kingdom and Brazil. A Western European fair alone cannot represent the year’s international exhibition landscape.
- Curatorial propositions: Sharjah framed an open question through to carry; Liverpool connected place and social foundations through BEDROCK; São Paulo centered humanity as a practice.
- Scale: Art Basel’s gallery and attendance figures, Liverpool’s participating-artist count and the other biennials’ program descriptions are different kinds of information. They do not provide a like-for-like ranking.
Together, these events show how “2025 in art” can mean very different things: a market-facing fair, exhibitions distributed across cities and regions, or a biennial organized around a broad curatorial proposition. They are representative highlights, not a census of the year’s exhibitions.
