Prepare flannel before cutting
The companion guide Tips for Working with Flannel recommends choosing higher-quality flannel that is more tightly woven and heavier; those fabrics generally hold their shape better and are easier to sew. Buy an additional 1/8–1/4 yard for shrinkage and handling, then prewash and dry yardage before cutting because flannel typically shrinks more than cotton.
The guide gives one explicit exception: do not prewash flannel precuts. Follow the pattern’s cutting and care requirements if they differ, and keep your treatment consistent across fabrics in the same quilt.

Set up your machine for flannel
- Handle the fabric gently, especially along bias edges, and pin more often than you would with a stable quilting cotton.
- Use a larger needle such as a 90/14 for medium-weight flannel.
- Try a slightly longer stitch length and let the machine feed the fabric without tugging or twisting.
- Remove stitches carefully so you do not damage the soft, loosely handled surface.
- Add a machine-compatible walking foot only if the feed dogs are not moving the layers evenly; it is a troubleshooting option, not a requirement for every project.
Seam allowances are pattern-specific. Some experienced quilters recommend wider allowances for flannel, but there is no single universal flannel allowance; use the measurement and pressing instructions supplied with your chosen pattern.

A practical start-to-finish checklist
- Choose the project scale—bed, throw, baby, wall, or table—and confirm the finished dimensions.
- Open the current pattern page and verify whether access is free or paid.
- Buy tightly woven flannel plus the recommended extra 1/8–1/4 yard for yardage projects.
- Prewash and dry yardage; leave precuts unwashed unless the pattern specifically directs otherwise.
