23 DIY Christmas ornament ideas
1. Silver seed-pod ornaments
Spray-paint pine cones, poppy pods, acorns, or other collected natural objects silver, then add hooks. Varying the shapes creates a coordinated but not identical branch.
2. Botanical paper-clay ornaments

4. Golden wood-bead ornaments
String three wooden beads—example sizes are 12 mm, 18 mm, and 35 mm—on gold leather cord and spray-paint them for a metallic finish. Tie the cord into a loop or tassel-style hanger.

The North Dakota Forest Service recipe uses 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup table salt, and 1/3 cup water, plus 1 tablespoon more if needed. Optional essential oil adds scent. Gather a bowl, spoon, rolling pin, cookie cutters or a drinking glass, a drinking straw, parchment paper, and twine or ribbon.
- Combine the flour and salt, add the water gradually, and knead for about 10 minutes.
- Press in needles, seeds, or twigs for texture if desired.
- Roll and cut the shapes, then make a hanging hole with the straw. Keep the hole away from the edge so the ornament is less likely to break.
- Place pieces on parchment paper and bake at 200°F for about an hour, flipping halfway, until dry. The guide also offers air-drying for roughly three to five days, or up to a week for larger or thicker pieces. Actual times vary with thickness and oven conditions.
- When fully dry and cool, paint, glitter, and add the hanging cord.
Scouts UK safety guidance stresses that salt dough is not edible. Supervise children around ovens and other heat sources, teach safe handling of sharp tools, and check materials for allergies or skin sensitivities.
