Decorate a pumpkin without a knife: paint it, wrap it, dress it with natural materials or build a stacked display. These 27 ideas range from quick, low-mess patterns to more involved projects, so you can choose based on your materials, time and where the pumpkin will sit.

Paint and pattern
Paint is the most flexible way to change a pumpkin’s color or give it a graphic design. Painted projects are best kept indoors and out of the rain: Crayola advises testing water-based products first, allowing extra drying time and protecting the finished pumpkin from moisture because those paints may run or wash off. Its guidance also says pumpkins decorated with its art materials are not for consumption because the materials are not food-grade. Read Crayola’s pumpkin-painting guidance.
1. Leafless-tree silhouette
Paint a bare branching tree across a greenish pumpkin for a simple seasonal scene. Use the pumpkin’s natural color as the background and let the silhouette dry before moving it.
2. Copper-leaf finish
Cover a pumpkin with metallic copper leaf for a reflective, polished look. Work in small sections and follow the adhesive and leaf product directions.
3. Marbled pumpkin
Create a swirled, stone-like effect by marbling the surface with paint. Test the colors and technique on a spare surface first, and keep the finished pumpkin dry.

Change the pumpkin’s base color with spray paint, then leave it plain or add a design once the coating has dried. Use spray products only according to their label directions, with suitable ventilation and adult supervision.
5. Polka-dot pumpkin
Paint dots in one color or several, spacing them evenly for a neat pattern or clustering them for a playful one.
6. Striped pumpkin
Paint vertical or horizontal stripes around the pumpkin. Masking can help make crisp lines; remove it as the paint directions recommend.

7. Color-blocked pumpkin
Divide the surface into large sections and paint each a different color. This works especially well when you want a bold design without detailed drawing.
Attached embellishments
Small decorations add texture and facial features without cutting the pumpkin. Adhesives and tiny pieces can make these projects less suitable for young children to handle independently.
8. Vegetable-and-bean portrait
Arrange vegetables and beans on the pumpkin to make a portrait, using larger pieces for prominent features. Treat fresh ingredients as temporary decorations rather than durable outdoor materials.
9. Googly-eye character
Add googly eyes to turn a plain pumpkin into a character. Small items such as googly eyes are choking hazards; keep them away from young children and supervise closely. Highlights for Children’s no-carve ideas also flags this risk.
10. Button-face pumpkin
Use buttons to create eyes, a nose or a smiling mouth. Secure them with an appropriate adhesive and keep loose buttons out of reach of small children.
11. Sequin accents
Arrange sequins in a small motif, border or scattered pattern. This is a detail-heavy choice; use adult help with small pieces and adhesive.
12. Beaded design
Attach beads as a geometric pattern or use a few as highlights. Because beads are small, this is better as an adult-led project around young children.

13. Nature-collage pumpkin
Attach leaves, seed pods or other collected natural items to make a textured collage. Natural materials can dry out or deteriorate, so plan to display this one briefly and indoors.
Wrapped and fabric constructions
Wrapping and fabric can conceal much of the pumpkin’s surface and create a softer finish. Fabric pumpkins and faux pumpkins are useful options when you want decorations you can store and bring back next year.

14. Mummy pumpkin
Wrap a pumpkin with streamers, leaving gaps for eyes or adding eyes on top of the wrap. Overlap the strips so they stay in place, without covering any lighting or creating a fire hazard.
15. Fabric-covered pumpkin
Cover a pumpkin with fabric and gather or secure the material at the top. This can be a reusable seasonal accent when made with a faux pumpkin.
16. Sweater-texture pumpkin
Use a piece of an old sweater or knit fabric to give a pumpkin a cozy surface. Secure the fabric neatly and keep the decoration away from open flames.
17. Ribbon-wrapped pumpkin
Wrap ribbon around the pumpkin in parallel bands or crisscrossing lines. Choose a secure attachment method and trim loose ends.

19. Decoupaged pumpkin
Apply paper pieces to the surface for a layered, patterned finish. Allow the adhesive to dry fully, and keep the result protected from moisture.
Natural-material faces
Leaves, twigs, gourds and other natural objects make tactile decorations without paint. They are generally best for short-term, sheltered displays because fresh or dried materials can shift or deteriorate.
20. Pumpkin gourd family
Arrange pumpkins and gourds of different sizes as a little family, then use natural items to suggest faces or clothing. Give every piece a stable resting place so the arrangement will not topple.

21. Leaf-and-twig face
Use leaves for hair or brows and small twigs for features. Attach pieces securely, and keep the finished display where wind or passing hands will not scatter it.
22. Acorn and seed-pod features
Build a face from acorns, seed pods or similar natural finds. Choose larger pieces where possible and supervise children around any small components.
23. Garden-creature pumpkin
Use natural materials to give a pumpkin the look of an owl, fox or other garden creature. Place larger features symmetrically, then add ears or wings with leaves or bark.

Stacking pumpkins creates height and makes a stronger display than a single decorated pumpkin. The base matters: use a firm, level surface and arrange the pieces so the stack cannot wobble.

24. Mini-pumpkin tower
Stack small pumpkins from largest at the bottom to smallest at the top. Check that each one sits securely before adding the next.
25. Pumpkin-and-gourd topiary
Alternate pumpkins and gourds for varied shapes and colors. A stable base and careful balance are essential, especially in a busy entryway.
26. Painted stacked display
Paint pumpkins separately, let them dry, then stack them into a coordinated display. Keeping the decoration on individual pieces makes them easier to reposition.
27. Faux-pumpkin topiary
Use artificial pumpkins for a display you can disassemble and store. Choose pieces that sit securely together and keep the finished arrangement away from places where it could be knocked over.

Safety and materials checklist
No-carve means no knife work, but it does not eliminate every risk. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated an annual average of 3,200 Halloween-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments, and reported that 55% were related to pumpkin carving in its 2022 release covering the preceding three years. It recommends battery-operated lights or glow sticks instead of open-flame candles. See the CPSC’s Halloween safety release.
- Choose a project and gather its paint, fabric, adhesive or natural materials before starting.
- Supervise children, especially when the project uses googly eyes, beads, buttons or other small parts.
- Follow product labels for paint, spray products and adhesives; give wet finishes enough time to dry.
- Keep painted pumpkins decorated with non-food-grade art materials away from food and do not eat them.
- Use battery-operated lighting or glow sticks, not a candle inside or beside the decoration.
- Set stacked pumpkins on a firm, level surface where they will not be bumped.
A ready-made option is Crayola’s No Carve Pumpkin Decorating Kit with Paint Sticks, model 541090. Crayola lists four paint sticks, glitter glue, a stencil sheet and instructions; it says the sticks work on real and artificial pumpkins, need no water cleanup, and the kit is for ages 5 and up. Check the manufacturer’s kit details.
For a simple materials checklist, start with the pumpkin or faux pumpkin, the chosen decorating materials, a protected work surface, any needed adhesive, and a safe battery-operated light if the display will be illuminated. Add child supervision and drying time to the plan whenever the project calls for small parts or wet finishes.
