3 Evidence-Based Reasons the Solo Stove Summit 24 Stands Out as a Fire Pit

The Solo Stove Summit 24 combines strong independently tested smoke management with a lower flame view and simpler ash handling, but its heat reach, ignition and price deserve scrutiny.

The Solo Stove Summit 24 has a credible case for standing out: an independent 2026 test found very low smoke, the design includes practical ash-handling hardware, and the lower wall gives a more open view of the flames. Those benefits come with limits. The test ranked it fifth out of 16 fire pits, found only moderate heat reach for larger groups, and recorded ignition problems with the brand’s optional gel. Treat “smokeless” as a goal rather than a guarantee, and evaluate the Summit 24 against your group size, fuel routine, surface and budget.

What the Summit 24 is

The Summit 24 is a 24-inch-diameter, wood-burning fire pit built from stainless steel. Solo Stove lists it at 15.4 inches high and 35.1 pounds, with a built-in stand and removable ash pan. The company positions it for groups of five to seven; that is seating guidance from the manufacturer, not an independent capacity measurement.

Its combustion design uses a raised center cone and venting to draw air through the fire. The result is intended to reburn some smoke-producing gases above the main fire. It is not literally smoke-free in every condition. Solo Stove says a little smoke during startup is normal, and its instructions warn that overfilling the bowl or blocking vent holes can create smoke.

The lower profile is also deliberate. In Solo Brands’ September 8, 2025 launch release, CEO John Larson said: “We listened to people who loved the idea of a smokeless fire pit but were intimidated to get started. Customers told us they wanted to see more flame and have a fire pit that’s as easy as possible to use.” That explains the design goal; it is not independent customer research.

Reason 1: independent testing found strong smoke management

OutdoorGearLab’s review, published January 9, 2026, gave the Summit 24 a 9.0 smoke-management score and described it as burning clean with minimal smoke. In the same test, the pit earned an 81 overall score and ranked fifth among 16 reviewed fire pits. Those are comparative review results under one publisher’s test conditions, not a promise that every fire will behave identically.

Smoke performance depends heavily on fuel and loading. Use dry, split firewood; wet or oversized logs can smolder and overwhelm the airflow. Start with a modest load, leave the vent openings clear, and add wood only as the existing pieces burn down. A brief smoky period while the fire establishes itself is expected. If smoke remains heavy, check for damp wood, too much fuel, or blocked vents before blaming the stove.

A high smoke score matters most in seating areas where drifting smoke is the main reason people avoid wood fires. It does not mean the Summit is suitable beneath a roof or close to neighbors: the exterior still becomes extremely hot, and sparks and embers can escape.

Reason 2: setup and ash handling are less fiddly

The current product design includes a built-in stand, so the bowl does not require a separate support ring each time you set it up. It also has a removable ash pan. After the fire and metal have cooled completely, you can remove the base plate and empty the pan rather than scooping ash from a deep, fixed cavity.

These features reduce steps, but they do not make the pit effortless or safe on every surface. Solo Stove still instructs owners to choose a stable, non-flammable surface that can tolerate high temperatures. The stand creates clearance; it does not override the heat rating of a deck, patio coating or other material.

A practical setup sequence

  1. Choose the location. Set the Summit on a level, stable, non-flammable surface with generous clearance from walls, furniture, vegetation, overhangs and patio ceilings.
  2. Inspect the airflow path. Confirm that the lower vents and the space around the center cone are not packed with debris or ash.
  3. Load a small starting fire. Arrange about five or six small, dry split logs around the cone, leaving the vent openings visible.
  4. Light the kindling. Kindling is the standard method. Fire Starter Gel is optional; Solo Stove claims it can light wood up to three times faster than traditional kindling.
  5. Add fuel gradually. Once the first pieces are burning cleanly, add logs in stages. Do not overfill or stack wood above the vent openings.
  6. Shut down and cool. Allow the fire to go out naturally and wait until the pit is completely cool before removing the base plate or emptying ash.

The stainless steel can develop a golden-blue heat patina over time. That color change is a normal finish alteration, not by itself evidence of a defect.

Reason 3: the lower wall gives flames a clearer sightline

Solo Stove says the Summit’s lower-profile wall was designed to improve flame visibility. Compared with a taller-walled pit, a seated person should have less metal blocking the center of the fire. The claim is a stated design objective rather than a separately measured visibility result, so treat it as a likely ergonomic benefit, not a quantified performance specification.

The open sightline is useful when the fire is the social focus: people can watch flames from more angles without standing. The trade-off is that a lower wall does not shield as much radiant heat or contain as many sparks as a taller enclosure. Solo Stove identifies a compatible Shield that can minimize escaping sparks, but the accessory does not eliminate the need for supervision and clearance.

Lighting the Summit 24: gel is optional, not guaranteed

The Quick-Strike Cone is intended to help organize the initial fire. Solo Stove’s instructions allow ordinary kindling, while the company’s US product page presents Fire Starter Gel as an optional aid and claims up to three-times-faster lighting than traditional kindling.

That claim should be weighed against the independent test. OutdoorGearLab reported multiple failed attempts to ignite a fire with the gel and listed proprietary starter gel among its reasons to avoid the pit. In other words, gel is neither necessary nor proven reliable in every condition. Keep dry kindling available, follow the gel label precisely if you use it, and never add liquid starter to an already burning or hot fire.

Heat reach and the “without a diffuser” question

OutdoorGearLab scored heat output 8.0 and reported that the Summit provides enough warmth for smaller groups but can fall short for larger gatherings because radiant heat is limited. The review measured a 65-minute burn time in its test. That duration is one result under the reviewer’s fuel and weather conditions, not a guaranteed runtime.

For a group of five to seven, seating distance matters as much as the nominal bowl size. People closest to the pit will feel substantially more heat than those at the edge of a circle. A heat-deflector accessory can redirect warmth, but the available evidence does not establish a universal heat gain or a specific performance result for the Summit 24 without one. If strong heat projection is your priority, plan a smaller seating circle, use properly seasoned hardwood and expect to add fuel during a long gathering.

Important trade-offs before buying

Limited radiant heat for large gatherings

The independent heat score and reviewer comments point to the same constraint: the Summit can warm a smaller circle, but it may not throw enough heat for a large party. A 24-inch opening creates a substantial flame, yet efficient combustion can send more heat upward than outward. Arrange chairs close enough for warmth while preserving a safe buffer.

The center cone uses fire-space

The internal cone improves airflow but occupies room that could otherwise hold wood. OutdoorGearLab identifies that lost central space as a drawback. You must place logs around the cone and feed them gradually rather than filling the entire bowl with a single large load.

Ignition may require patience

The gel’s failed attempts in testing mean the quickest advertised start is not assured. Kindling, dry fuel and correct loading remain essential even if you purchase the optional gel.

Price varies by date and retailer

Solo Stove’s US page listed the Summit 24 at $499.99 when accessed October 13, 2026. OutdoorGearLab’s publication page showed a $600 list price. The earlier $599.99 figure in the September 2025 launch release is historical. Prices can change, so verify the current checkout total, shipping destination and any exclusions before ordering.

Safety requirements

  • Use the pit only outdoors on a stable, non-flammable surface rated for high temperatures.
  • Keep it away from overhangs, roofs, patio ceilings, walls, dry grass and other flammable materials.
  • The exterior becomes extremely hot. Keep children, pets and flammable objects well away.
  • Never leave a lit fire unattended. Keep an extinguisher or a readily available water source nearby.
  • Expect sparks and embers to escape. A compatible Shield may reduce them, but it is not a substitute for supervision.
  • Do not move the pit, remove the base plate or empty ash until every component is completely cool.
  • Follow local fire restrictions and burn regulations, which can be stricter than the product instructions.

Cleaning, storage and finish care

After complete cooling, remove the base plate and empty the ash pan. Keeping ash from accumulating around the airflow passages helps preserve the intended combustion path. Store the unit where rain cannot fill the bowl, and inspect it before the next fire for debris, corrosion or blocked vents. The expected golden-blue stainless-steel patina does not need to be polished away unless you prefer a uniform appearance.

Warranty, returns and compatible accessories

Solo Stove’s current US listing advertises a lifetime warranty for genuine products bought through an authorized retailer, with replacement for a product the company determines to be defective. Coverage is subject to the current warranty terms, so retain proof of purchase and read the exclusions rather than assuming every type of damage qualifies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same listing describes 30-day returns for orders shipped in the contiguous United States, with exclusions, and free standard shipping on orders of $199 or more subject to geographic exceptions. Confirm those conditions for your address at checkout.

Named compatible accessories include the 24-inch Heat Deflector, Surround and Shield. Fire Starter Gel is an optional ignition aid. Check model compatibility, inventory and current prices before adding any accessory; none is required to operate the pit with dry wood and kindling.

Who should choose the Summit 24?

  • Good fit: buyers who want a relatively low-smoke wood fire, a broad flame view and easier ash removal for small-to-medium gatherings.
  • Questionable fit: anyone needing strong, evenly distributed heat for a large group, a guaranteed instant ignition or an indoor/covered-patio appliance.
  • Plan for: dry split logs, gradual loading, a safe outdoor location and enough clearance for a very hot exterior.

Verdict

The Summit 24 stands out for three defensible reasons: OutdoorGearLab found excellent smoke management, the built-in stand and removable ash pan simplify routine handling, and the lower wall opens the flame view. Its 81 score and fifth-place ranking also put those strengths in context. Heat reach is limited for larger groups, the center cone reduces loading space, the optional gel was unreliable in testing, and the current $499.99 US price is a time-sensitive snapshot. For a carefully placed outdoor fire serving a smaller circle, those compromises may be acceptable; for maximum radiant heat or effortless lighting, they deserve serious consideration before purchase.
