The most convincing IKEA PAX makeovers start with storage that fits your clothes, then add the visual details that make the wardrobe belong to the room. Use the PAX planner to choose frames, hinged or sliding doors, KOMPLEMENT organizers and lighting; after the layout works, finish the outside with trim, filler, paint, paneling or new hardware. The 30 ideas below range from reversible organizer upgrades to advanced built-in work, so you can choose a project that matches your tools, space and confidence.
Plan the wardrobe before you style it
Measure the wall, ceiling height, door swing, skirting boards and any sloping or obstructed areas before ordering. List what the closet must hold: long dresses, short garments, folded clothing, shoes, bags, luggage and accessories. Then decide whether you want hinged or sliding doors and how much uninterrupted hanging space is practical.

Door widths, finishes, frame sizes and organizer availability differ by country and can change, so confirm the current options in your local planner and buying guide rather than relying on a photograph or an old measurement.

Safety and installation requirements
- IKEA’s PAX & KOMPLEMENT hinged-door buying guide says, “This furniture must be fixed to the wall.” Use fixings suitable for your wall construction, and follow the current local instructions.
- The same guide says, “IMPORTANT: 2 persons are required to assemble this furniture safely.” Do not attempt to raise or secure a tall frame alone.
- Level the frames before joining them. A plumb, level base prevents doors from drifting and makes trim gaps consistent.
- Before cutting a frame, molding or filler, confirm that no wiring, plumbing, vents or structural elements are in the cutting path. If a modification affects a wall, ceiling or load-bearing element, get qualified help.

1. Map your wardrobe by garment length
Use one bay for full-length dresses and coats, another for shirts and trousers, and a third for folded items. This prevents a beautiful layout from wasting vertical space and makes the correct KOMPLEMENT combination easier to select.
2. Add two-level hanging for short clothes
Install upper and lower hanging rails where shirts, skirts and folded-over trousers do not need full height. Keep one uninterrupted bay for long garments instead of forcing everything into double rails.
3. Build a drawer stack for folded clothing
Place drawers at a comfortable reach for knitwear, underwear or workout clothes. Use the planner to check drawer fronts, runners and neighboring door clearances before buying.
4. Reserve shelves for bags and boxes
Adjust shelf spacing to the actual height of handbags, hat boxes or storage bins. Fewer tall shelves are often more usable than many short compartments that cannot accept your containers.

Use shoe storage or shelves at the bottom of a frame, with the pairs you wear most often at the front. Leave enough width for boots and check whether the door closes over the chosen insert.

6. Add pull-out trays for accessories
Pull-out trays make belts, scarves and small bags visible without requiring a deep reach. Group similar items in separate trays so opening one does not disturb the rest.
7. Use pull-out hangers for narrow bays
A pull-out hanger can turn a shallow or side section into useful storage for trousers, ties or scarves. Verify that the mechanism is compatible with the selected frame depth and does not collide with a hinge.
8. Install interior lighting
IKEA describes wardrobe lighting options that include smart control and door-sensor lighting. Position lights so shelves do not cast shadows over hanging clothes, and follow the current electrical and installation instructions for your region.
9. Separate everyday and seasonal zones
Keep daily clothing in the central bays and move winter coats, spare bedding or occasion wear to high shelves or less accessible sections. Label opaque boxes so the seasonal rotation remains quick.
10. Add a valet section
Dedicate a small area to the outfit you plan to wear next. A pull-out hanger or short rail is useful for steaming, packing or preparing work clothes without disturbing the main hanging sections.
11. Coordinate every handle
Replace mixed or basic pulls with one consistent finish, such as all black, brass or wood-toned hardware. Measure the existing fixing points and confirm that the new handles clear adjacent doors.

12. Paint the doors
A painted door can connect PAX to the room’s wall color or make it a deliberate accent. Clean and lightly abrade the surface, use a primer intended for the door material, and follow the coating manufacturer’s drying and recoating guidance.

Wallpaper can introduce pattern without rebuilding the wardrobe. Apply it only to a stable, prepared surface, keep edges clear of hinges and handles, and test adhesion on an inconspicuous area first.
14. Add applied panel molding
Thin strips arranged as rectangles or squares can give a flat door a traditional look. Keep the pattern identical across paired doors and allow for the door’s opening clearance before fixing the strips.
15. Use a full-height panel treatment
Paneling that continues close to the ceiling makes the wardrobe read as architecture rather than a freestanding cabinet. Account for ventilation, door movement and access to any removable components.
16. Fill unused adjustment holes
Once the organizer layout is final, fill visible unused holes with a material compatible with the frame finish. Do this after testing the final shelf and drawer positions; filling too early removes useful adjustment options.

17. Replace the doors with compatible fronts
Replacement fronts can change the style dramatically while retaining the PAX carcass. Compatibility is not universal, so confirm dimensions, hinge positions, weight limits and current fitting instructions for the exact frame and door combination.

18. Match the wardrobe to the skirting
Continue the room’s skirting profile across the wardrobe base or use a carefully scribed transition. Leave doors and drawers enough clearance to open without scraping the trim.
19. Add a contrasting interior color
Keep the exterior quiet and use a contrasting painted back panel, drawer interior or accessory tray for visual interest. Protect moving hardware and let coatings cure fully before loading clothing.
20. Create a framed mirror door
A mirror can make a dressing area more useful and reflect light, but its weight and attachment method must suit the door. Use a professionally supplied compatible front or follow the mirror manufacturer’s mounting requirements rather than improvising on a hinged panel.
21. Build a level plinth

Filler pieces bridge the space between a frame and the wall, making the wardrobe appear fitted. Scribe the filler to an uneven wall, fasten it securely, and leave the door swing unobstructed.
23. Add a top casing or crown molding
Trim across the top conceals the gap to the ceiling and ties the closet to the room’s architecture. Ceiling height varies, so dry-fit the casing and keep access to any lighting connection or service point.

24. Wrap the sides with matching molding
Side molding can hide frame edges and create a finished cabinet outline. Use shims where the wall is irregular, then fasten the molding after the frames are level and anchored.

A wall surround can make PAX look like a purpose-built closet. A documented project recessed wardrobes so casing covered the gaps; this approach demands accurate depth measurements and careful planning around existing walls and services.
26. Convert a reach-in closet
Use the existing opening as the visual frame, adding filler and casing until the PAX fronts align with the surrounding wall. Check hallway access, door swing and the ability to remove a drawer or frame for future repairs.
27. Continue a feature wall across the doors
Paneling, paint or wallpaper can run from the adjacent wall onto the wardrobe fronts for a concealed, furniture-wall effect. Mark every hinge, handle and removable panel before applying the finish.
28. Adapt around a sloped ceiling
One project account describes cutting a frame to suit a slope. Treat this as advanced work: make a full-size template, verify that the altered frame remains stable, protect cut edges, and confirm that doors and organizers still operate before anchoring.

29. Design around an awkward opening
For a chimney breast, boxed pipe or narrow return, combine standard frames with fillers or a shallow section rather than assuming every bay must be identical. Re-measure after flooring, plaster or trim changes because small errors compound across a run.
30. Finish the installation as one piece of architecture
Combine the strongest compatible ideas: a level base, anchored frames, organized KOMPLEMENT interiors, concealed side gaps, top casing, coordinated skirting, consistent hardware and considered lighting. The result looks custom because every transition is intentional, not because the frame has been unnecessarily altered.

- Survey the room. Record wall-to-wall width at floor, mid-height and ceiling; measure height at several points; note skirting, outlets, vents, doors and slopes.
- Plan the storage. In the local IKEA PAX planner, select frame sizes, door type, KOMPLEMENT organizers and lighting. Save the configuration and verify stock and compatibility for your region.
- Mock up clearances. Mark frame footprints on the floor with tape. Open doors and drawers through their full travel and check walkways.
- Prepare the base. Build and level a plinth if the floor is uneven or a continuous toe-kick is part of the design.
- Assemble with two people. Follow the current instructions, join frames as specified and keep the structure supported while it is being raised.
- Anchor to the wall. Select fixings for the wall material and complete the required anti-tip attachment before loading the wardrobe.
- Install organizers and lighting. Test drawer, shelf, hanger and door movement before closing any trim gaps.
- Finish the exterior. Fit fillers, casing, molding, decorated doors and hardware. Leave serviceable access where lighting or fasteners may need attention.
- Load and test. Distribute weight, check that doors remain level, confirm sensors or switches work, and correct rubbing or movement before everyday use.
Common failure points and fixes
- Doors rub or sit unevenly: recheck that every frame is level and plumb, then adjust hinges according to the current instructions.
- A filler looks wavy: scribe it to the wall instead of forcing a straight cut, and use shims behind the fastening points.
- Drawers hit trim: remove or reposition the casing, or revise the drawer and door combination before final fastening.
- Lighting leaves dark zones: move the light source toward the front edge of shelves and test it with doors closed.
- Paint chips at edges: confirm the primer suits the substrate, allow full cure time, and avoid coating hinge contact surfaces.
- A modified frame feels unstable: stop using it, restore the approved configuration if possible, and obtain competent advice before proceeding.
- Parts are unavailable: check the current local planner and buying guide; regional sizes, finishes and KOMPLEMENT compatibility are not guaranteed to match older projects.
What makes a PAX makeover look genuinely custom?
Consistency matters more than the number of modifications. Align door reveals, repeat the same trim profile, carry the room’s skirting or paint language across the wardrobe, and keep daily-use storage at reachable heights. Use cutting and structural changes only when a standard frame, filler and casing cannot solve the room’s geometry. That preserves organizer and door compatibility while delivering the fitted appearance most people want.
